A Regular Democratic Meeting-.-John
Birmlnghs m Endorsed.
Mn. EDITOR :—ACCitl , llt Lek us to Mrs. Hartman's
tavern, at Woods run, on Saturday night, where wo
found a regularly orgauizA Williams meeting, and
as our party consisted of good Democrats who had
but little confidence in the honesty of the great
"I am," the arch demagogue of railroad notoriety,
we thought that by exercising a little patience and
discretion, we might possibly change the sentiments
of those in attendance in favor of Capt. John Bir.
mingham.
We procured the early adjournment of the rival
meeting—in fact, we choked off some ambitions
mouthers of meaningless words, and organized a
National Democratic meeting by calling Mr. Samuel
Smith to the Chair, and appointing Jas. J. Sweeny,
Secretary. After we had organized, P. J. Sinclair,
Esq., was called upon for a speech. Ho responded,
and held forth in an able, eloquent address of some
length, in which ho clearly demonstrated the integ
rity of James Buchanan and his administration, and
the principles of the Democratic party. He cloarly
proved that the Democracy had always been with the
people, closely and faithfully watching over and
guarding their interest. He showed that Williams,
in his mongrel Press, endeavored treacherously to
advance the interests of Gen. J. K. Moorhead, at the
expense of Andrew Burke, and convinced all present
that it would be an insult to common decency and
James Buchanan to send a rapid Black Republican
to Congress with Democratic votes.
He then spoke of Birmingham—his integrity—the
services he had always been proud t, render his
party—his character, intellectually and morally—
and changed nearly every Williams Democrat pres
ent; in fact, many were ashamed that they looked
with fuvor on the notorious rai road lawyer, Tom
Mr. Sinclair was followed by that staunch demo
crat, Samuel Smith, Esq., of Manchester, at the con
clusion of whose speech, Mr. Sweeny introduced the
following resolutions which were adopted by accla
mation.
Resolved, That as true national Democrats, having
entire confidence in the integrity of James Buchan•
an and his administration, and believing it onr duty
rather to aid than oppress him in his efforts for the
national got d, we will endeavor, in the person of Capt.
John Birmingham to send from the 22d Congression
al district a true and faithful democrat.
RsPiD/veci, That this meeting adjourn to moot again
at the same place at 7 o'clock next Thursday evening.
SAMUEL SMITH, Chairman.
Jas. J. SWEENY, Secretary.
Dinner to Pre'!dent Taggart
Below we publish an invitation to a public dinner
to Hon. David Taggart, President of the State Agri
cultural Society, signed by u number of oar citizens.
He has not yet replied, but will doubtless accept the
proffered compliment. Certainly it could not be
more worthily bestowed, for to Mr. Taggart and Sec
retary Holster our citizens cannot but feel deeply in
debted. To them in a high degree must be attribu
ted the unexampled success of the exhibition just
closed, which has been of as much pecuniary benefit
to our citizens as it has been gratifying to their muni
cipal pride. In this view we hope the invitation
may be accepted, that the worthy President may
know the estimation in which he is hold by our citi
zens, and that those citizens may express the grati
tude they feel towards him :

Tits e State t.Falr
The exhibition of the...Pannsylvania State Agri
cultural Society has at length drawn to a close, and
we take pleasure in saying that it has bean the most
successful ever held in the State, a handsome sur
plus being left after the payment of expenses. The
dhplay has never been equalled, much less excelled,
in either and of the State. This result is due to the
citizens of Pittsburgh end vincinity, in a great mein
sure, and fully as much to the energy mid eminent
fitness for their respective positions of Hon. D. A.
Taggart, President, and Judge A. O. Heister, Secre
tary of the Society.
The attendance on Saturday morning was good,
when the facts firp taken into consideration that all
the articles were being removed as rapidly as possi
ble, that it was announced that the Fair would 6080
at noon, and that the only attraction announced, the
cricket match, was doubtful. -However, a match was
played between two elevens of the Olympia club,
which was watched with eager interest by the spec
tators present. The pretoi.tms not previously an.
nounced were awarded, and at three o'clock in tea
afternoon the grounds wore entirely deserted, except
by these employed in removing the articles whi. , l3
had been on e.i:hibition, and the employees et the
Society. . .
The prumiums to those residing in the county
were paid at the utriee on the grounds. Uur city
friends who htt,s- teen lertunete enough to obtain
premiums con get thew by calling at the Secretary's
office, on F fth street, over Reed's jewelry store.
We hope the unexampled succ.ess of this oKhibi
tion may indu-o the utheers of the Snoiety to hold
the next one here. It will be a groat advantage to
them and our city.

Rheumatism.--:This intractable disease has at last
found a perfect and thorough cure, which will be
hailed with ecstasy by the thousands who suffer with
it almost continually. It consists in a topical props.
ration, which softens the parts in such a way as to
remove congestion and the morbid condition of the
secretions in a few applications. It is prepared by
Dr. Geo. H. llgiraus, of 140 Wood street, after one
of the best recipes ever known, called " Rheumatic
Pain Extractor." Dr. Keyser says that he has cured
the most violent chronic rheumatic pains with this
medicine in a few days, and even when the tendons
and joints were stiff and enlarged, has removed the
stiffening and cured the enlargement. It would be
well enough for persons who are subject to these at
tacks to remember this when an attack comes on, as
it may save a good deal of suffering. It is equally
good for neuralgic pains, and as a local application,
has"no equal in the Materia Medica. •
Foster's National.—The Hutchinson Brothers had

Catholic FUAeraill
We noticed the fact, some weeks since, that a meet
ing had boon held in Bt. Paul's Cathedral, relative to
the manner of conducting funerals. On that occa
sion Bishop O'Connor made some suggestions on the
subject, and now in order to carry them out properly
the following order has been issued We are glad
to see this religious body take the initiatory steps in
reducing the usage - Ila needless expense which has
become so general on those mournful occasions, and
we can only hope that other congregations may
adopt similar prudent regulations:
2b the th.thotic: of Pittsburgh, Allegheny, and the adjoin
ing 13oratighs.
llaving learu.d, with mach vain, that abuses of a most
serious nature Lave ft, queully groan tut of the manner
of conducting funerals in this city and neighborhood, and
havuig consulted with the clergy and people on the beat
mode of applying a remedy, we are happy in having every
reason to believe that Wu measures we have resolved
to adopt will be entered Into with almost unanimous
cordialty by all classes of cur people.
It is unnecessary for us te dwell on the Injury sustained
by many families through a vain display at funerals, and
it would be an insult to think it necessary to dilate on the
special impropriety of levity and drunkenness at wakes or
funerals. All admit these things, but the tyranny of
usage makes it difficult, if not impossible, fur many to avoid
them. Unless a general reform be adopted, it le luipossl-
Ids to check the evil.
It affords na sincere pleasnae to find that those who are beat
able to meet any outlay that might be required on such
occasions, and from. whom no danger of moral disorder need
be apprehended, are foremost In their desire to adopt any
measures that are necessary to put a stop to exhiting evils.
The following is therefore, adopted as the tuo,!e of COll
- Catholic funerals in the cities of Pittsburgh and
Allegheny, and In the adjoining boroughs, whenever the
performance of the Church services fe desired :
1. The funeral, at which the trierell of the de, eased, or t..f
the votviving re'attves, are expected m be present, ,had be
10'a:tried to the proc..ratun flow t tll,lllle to the t•hutch,
end the obtequiee preformed in the Chet eh
2. no carriagea shall be permitted but :!:nee ceutatolug
the pill bearers and the immediate reiataws of the deceased.
The wearing of mourning shall 'be a bet of then centtec•
that with Int, deceased. when more than t carriages are
need
3. All others attending the loneral, loot from the
hoee.o to the Church, and are considered distouised whoa the
oteequi-e are performed
4 The Priest who is to officiate will receive the (\apse at
the (km. or theCharch la accordance, with the requirements
of the Ritual Ile should be informed befotehand who has
charge of the funeral. Before receiving the corpse be will
twit this person publicly whether he engages to Nee the rules
here laid down faithfully followed, and whether they have
been followed uplo that time. Unless an answer be given
in the affirtnativecr If It be certain that they really hove
been disregarded, the corpse will nut be received into the
Chuich
5. When more than two carriages are used, the person in
chargo of the funeral should bring a list of the lame to the
officiating Priest. and satisfy him that they are o copied by
the persons ribose referred to. This list, signed by the
Priest, will eutltle such carriages to admittance , u the Cern
Mery. Without such a document., the 41te keeper at the
Cemetery will nut admit mute than twu carriages at Buy
funeral.
Ruch aro the rules that have been adopted, and such the
means by which they will ho enforced. if there be any who
are unwilling to comply with them, we will gppose no ob
stacle to their taking their friends to the Catholic Cemetery,
but we will not pe mit the ceremonies of the Church to be
made part of a pageant which in so mans cerise is prod uo.
live of the greatest disorders. They can take the remains
of their friends to the grave without any Church Rites.
We feel fully warranted in this measure by the grievous
injury Inflicted on many families, and the moral evils uric.
lug from the custom now existing, which we see no other
mesas of correcting. f if. O'CONNOR,
Bishop of Pittsburgh

A Desired Testimonial.—During the State Fair we
had occasion several time; to refer to the tine display
made by Mr. W. Haven. We ere gratified to
learn that the committee on printing, bnok binding
and stationery have awarded him several premiums
as follows :
For the beet specimen of book or pamphlet print
ing, $5,00
For the best display of Blank Books, $5,00
For the best specimen of Book Binding, a Di
ploma.
For the beet writing paper, a Diploma.
For the best printing paper, a Diploma.
For the best diatilay et Stationery, a Diploma.
Lie was also awarded a diploma tiir the best di,
play, of Plain and Fancy Job Printing and Ruling.
However, we quote from the report of the Commit
tee :
" Your committee would neglect their duty did
they not make special mention of the fine display of
Mr. W. 8. Haven, in to ia department. Among hie
specimens of book binding, book, pamphlet, plain
and fancy job printing, blank books and ruling,
were some of the finest we have seen. The Allo.
gheny Cemetery Report, among his pamphlets, was,
in composition, presswork and paper, (as a volume
of poems and another of "rule and figure work,"
among his specimens of book printing,) faultless.
An intricate piece of ruled work, executed for the
Pennsylvania Railroad Company, was done with an
accuracy and neatness truly surprising: His display
of printing and writing paper and stationery, con
tained every variety; whilst he also exhibited t Prow
the shelves of his warerooto) every him: ~ f
books, neatly and elegantly bound.
We, therefore, award him, in addition to the di
plomas, dre , already mentioned, a diploma for the
best display of Plain and Fancy Job Printing and
Ruling."

Make Your Own Soap—Concentrated Lye.—We
vould call the attention of our readers particularly

' Important to Families." The a,tiole is an inval-

soap at a very trifling cost of labor, time or money.
We have used it ourselves, both in our office and
families, and can speak knowingly of it.
Wo would warn parties against spurious articles,
as imitations have lately been thrust upon the mar
met by unprincipled parties. Infringers on ilia Cow
