THE PENPSYL VANIA STATE FAIR FOUETEI DAY. The rain of Thursday night, though it refreshed the earth, and settled the dust, which was such a f nations annoyance on Thursday, rather discouraged many from visiting t'ho fair grounds on Friday morn lag. About noon, however, the sun shone out bril• Bundy, and by three o'clock, the attendance was al most as largo as on the day previous. It was deoi dedly tho pleasantest day of the fair, and those who were present seemed to enjoy themselves very much. The interest continued unabated, and Floral Hall was so densely crowded during a groat part of the day, that it was almost impossible to effect a passage. At Artists Hall, Machinists' Hall and Mechanics' Hall the visitors were quite numerous. Wo continue to notice the article:. of interest on exhibition. CEMDN'T AND OP-AVEL ROJPINGi.—MOSSTS. James M. Grant Co., euccccsors to 11. M. Warren A Co., exhibit in Mechanics' Hall the model of a small house, the roof of which is covered with a coating of the Improved Saturated Elastic Canvas Fire Proof Roofing, which Messrs. Grant A Co. have carried to the utmost perfection. They have also the right to use Warren A Co.'s Felt Roofing. Messrs. Grant A Co.'s Roofing is of the best and most substantial character. It has been thoroughly tested in this city and universally approved. They are it not nfacturin,g the article largely and applying not only here, but in distant counties. The roofing is said by the most competent judges to be one of the most important improvements in roofing that bus yet been introduced, though the last few years has been prolific in inventions of this character. Int canvas is elasti; and fire proof, which latter is of itself a great recommendation. It also possesses the superior advantage of being to tally impervious to water, and is covcrof with gravel, thus forming a double prate° tion. Tho canvas on which it is laid is made so as to combine the greatest possible amount of elasticity, which prevents any contraction and consequent crack. lug of the material applied on top of it. A roof that will last for any length of time, and keep out water, has therefore been a great desideratum ; but this in vention seems to supply the deficiency, which is very desirable. The roofing can be applied to any roof, either fiat or pitched, at a very trifling cost,, The manufacturers of this roofing, as an evidence of its in.trinic merit end superiority, apply it and guar antee it to last for ten years, without repairs. Far , niers in the city who contemplate building, would do well to call on , :essrs. Grant A Co., and examine their specimens of roofing, as they can effect a groat saving in this particular. They can ba found at No. 24 Fifth street. DRAVO'S SPICES.—Near the entrance of the Hall devoted to Domestic manufactures, Mr. F. it. Dravo exhibits a large collection of Spices, the quality of which is unsurpassed in excellence. There are sam ples of every spice in use, and they are manufac tured by Mr. Dravo in their purity, without adulter ation of any sort. They are the best that can be purchased in any market, and the Judges of the Fair seem to bo of this opinion, for the spices man ufactured by Mr. Dravo carried off both the medal and the premium. Families and dealers can he sup. plied with three Premium spices at the store o: Mr. U. D. Dr 1, c..rnor of Union street and the Dia u34.nd. 11A t:N . S DISPLAY.—The display of W. S. Haven, in Mechanics' Hall, admitted to be equal, if not supe nor to any on the ground, is still the centre of much attraction. Thera are many who, although living near anti in the city, have never seen a print ing press in operation, and to them the card press couttnually throwing off cards is an ohjact of much inter, at. He also exhibits some -speciuicns t.f the Atlantic Telegraph Cable, handsomely mounted. In r. larce gla s c!l:3a ae oleirrvvil a great variety of On Vol hote paper, papci. Weights, ink stands and of her articles in tho stationery department. Also a collection f printer's materials and teal;. The spe cimens of lit ding and blank work, ceoutod at his estahlishm.n:•, ;hi lsr set, and as may [ . .y the boat of its kind in Ca.: , era worthy at special exami• nation by BRICK MACIIINI3.—Mr. Norris Mati:i ochibits in Mechanics' Hall, a model of a I rick Machine, which is certainly the mist useful and labor-saving in ven thin we have ever seen. Their place of business is Kiralicrtun, Chester county, I'm REINESIAN Alevasur.—We are pleased to notice that our neighpurs over the way, Messrs. Heineman Moyran, whose display we have already noticed, received the first premium and a diploma on silver ware of their own manufacture. They were also awarded a second premium on the American watches exhibited by them, manufactured by Messrs. Ap• pleton, Tracy 4i Co. They state that the reason of their receiving only a second premium, was from the fact that they only had on exhibition the lower priced watches, racging in cost from twouty•fixo to fifty dollars, while other dealers exhibited those cost ing one hundred dollars and upwards. Messrs. It. A M. aro willing to guaranty that the same charac ter of watches as those already shown by them at the Fair, will wear rynadiy as long as the higher priced ones. The great beauty of these watbe consists in their uniformity, every distinct pine., in each watch being exactly alike, so that if any piece is teat or bra i•=rn it can 1.0 replaced at a very trifling cost, as caraparod with the retiairing of one it foreign man afact are. ltecKuam d KcvsElt.--Iti the Agricultural IJ3- iiirtinent, Messrs. Beckham 11, Keefer exhibit a va. tiok, of agrictiltural implements and labor saving machines ft.r form uce, which ovary ono who hie a form should examine. Aultwan S. Miller's Patent Combined Mower and keeper is an admirable ma chine of its kind, as is also Pitt's Separator. In Mortal/tea' Hall they hero a number of eta,' forks of extra quality, from the Fairmont Works, near Phil adelphia. SINGER'S SEWING MACIIINES.—Among the objects in Machinists' Hall which attracted universal obEer ,,ttinn, was Singer's Sewing Machines, which were corked by girls. The ladies lio, thed around tl,is is 1.0-to:tent in great numbers and sz.emed to admire the working of the machines. The present Fair will likoly prove a hßrvot.4t to the dealers in these value b!e implements, as many strangers will purchase be fore IcAvinfz town. We advise them to call on Mr. It. Straw, th. 2 agent, corner of Second and Marl: of streets. Una et.. Co. exhib ited a very fine assortment of stoves and cooking ranges. One of the latter is a very complete and welt arranged affair, called the Improved Iron City Range, invented by themselves. There was quito a. lively competition in this department, a number of ranges of different patterns bring on exhibition. To Messrs. Graff et Co. he palm of excellence was given by awarding them the first premium ant a diploma for the best cooking range ; ono for the best Diamond coal cocking stove, and one fur the beet wood cook ing stove. As there was so much spirited competion amongst our iron manufacturers for premiums ,on these' articles, Messrs. Graff a Co. naturally root proud of carrying off the prize from more expo. rienced and older men in the business, thus exem p,ilying what can be done by energy and industry in any line of busitiess. 'l'eo G uN.—ln Mechanics' Hall wo noticed three guns, two target rifles and ono double-barreled rifle and shot gun, of superior workmanship and material. The maker of these. guns was D. J. M'Donald, whose shop is on Third street, near the St. Charles IlotroL Mr. M'Donald has long boon known in our city ae a gunmaker rarely to be equaled this side of tho At lantic, and it gave us pleasure to soe him bring his work before the public at the Fair. 19Tut;.sox CITY COLLEGE.—The specimens exhi bited by Messrs. F. W. Jenkins Co., at Artists Hall at the Fair, have met the universal sad en qualified commendation of all who have seen them. They aro certainly the most perfect specimens of the art Chirographic which have ever been seen in this country. This Institution has a corps of most competent Instructora, and the course of ihetruction which they pursue, gives the best of satisfaosion to the pupils who attend the college in great numbers, to acquire that practical knowledge of Book keep. ing and accounts, whica enables them at once to en ter upon the pursuits of active business life. As on Thursday, the horse ring was yesterday an attractive spot. The sports here were entertaining; the display of female equestrianism was excellent— four ladies occupying the ring for a part of the af. toruoon, a silver cup betng offered for the display. A donkey race, which excited much meriment, toolr place soon afterwards, attracting nearly the whole assemblage to the ring, while, ever and anon, as a rider was thrown to the ground by his steed, a mirthful peal was hard ringing through the air. The race over, it was annonced that Gen. WilllA. Stokes, of Greensburgb, would deliver an address, from the stops of the amphitheatre, and the" crowd moved in that direction. The address occupied some forty minutes, and was listened to with great interest. We publish it entlro on our outside. At the conclusion of Mr. Stok . es' address, the crowd dispersed, with the exception of those inter ested in the premium list, who repaired to the stand near the President's tent, where the awards were read by the Secretary of the Society, Judge Roister. This occupied fho-time until nearly dark. The list of premfams - taarded is too long for publication at present. This will be the last day of the exbibitiou—alos ing at noon. The morning is expected to be occu• pied by a game of cricket in the ring, by members of our home clubs, no reply having boon received to the challenge sent to Philadelphia. For this pur pose, the Judges' stand, itf the centre of the ring, will be removed. In the absence of this amusement, the ring will bo occupied by the horses, many of which still remain on the ground. Thus will close the most successful Fair over held in the State, the receipts being far in excess of the expenditures. To our own citizens, in a great mea sure is dao this result, as they have contributed to it by the employment of every means in their power, talent, time and money. MEWS Challenge To Mn. J. S. It is Impossible to define in 3dvanoe and with precision those cases in which national power may be exerted for their relief, or to what extent relief shall be afforded. Circumstances hi they arise, must prescribe the rule of action in countries where well defined and established laws are in operation, and where their adminis tration is committed to able and independent judged. Cases will rarely occur where such in invention will ba necessary ; but those elements of confidence and security are not everywhere found, and where that is unfortunately the ease, the United States are called upon to be more vigilant in watching over their citizens, and to interpose efficiently for their protection. When they are subjected to tortuous proceedings by the direct action of the government or by its in disposition or inability to discharge its duties, this government, however, yet indulges the hope that a returning sense of justice may induce the government of Nicaragua and Costa Rioa to rec ognize these duties, and to afford redress for the serious causes of complaint which the United States have urged. But it is proper they should both dtstinotly understand that the Ame.ican people and government have yielded enough to the ViealißilmB of 010m0 republics, and, without doing them injustice, they will now take care and du justice to themselves. l'rqlratory to such action as may I e neces sary, a naval force will be stationed at San Juan del Norte and also at San Juan del Sur and at Realeg e o, with orders to afford all necessary pro tection to the persons and property of American eit.zenz, and the commending officers will be die rented to communicate with you, and you will net fiil to keep them advised upon all the sub jeck which may relate to the exec:mien of the duties thus entrusted to them.
