MR. STORRS' ADDRESS
The able, eloquent and eminently practical
address, which was delivered before the State
Agricultural Society at the Fair Grounds on
Friday afternoon, should be read and preserved
by every farmer in the State. Always elo.
quent, and ever desirous to advance the in
terests of his fellow husbandmen, for he is a
practical farmer nnd a good one too, on this
occasion Mr. Stokes has fully realized the
high expectations of the public. The address
will be found upon tne first page of this paper.
'NUE SQUIE,IIIIIIG OF MR. WILLIAMS
Mr. Williams squirms like a snake with a
broken back in Friday's True Pres., because
the forlorn hope which he had of beating Mc,4
Knight in the XXIId district is utterly dee'
stroyed . by the nomination of that stern
ling - Democrat; Capt. John Birmingham.
Mr. Williams thought that by the aid of the
six wise men at Bakerstown he had got things
so fixed that the Democrats would either be
obliged to refrain from voting, or swallow
him, Black Republicanism and all. He is
bitterly chagrined at the manifestations of
satisfaction and pleasure with which the nom
nation of , Mr. Birmingham is hailed by the
Democrats of the District. He sees inevita
ble defeat, staring him in the face, and hence
his contortions are so ludicrously visible in
the columns of the True Press.
He attacks Mr. Birmingham and the De•
mocracy who have nominated him with the
stereotyped abuse that they are Railroad
Democrats, and a column of equally idle and
untrue assertions.
We do not blame Mr. Williams in the
least for this manifestation of his chagrin,
and disappointment at the manifest certainty
that be will be defeated in his vain glorious
anticipations of obtaining a seat in Congress.
His own party would not touch him ; he got
only fonr votes in his own Convention ; this
was a severe blow to his vanity ; but he had
a hobby, and he mounted it, and he offered
like any other jockey to sell the race for a
seat in Congress. Ile found some misguided
Democratic office holders who thought they
might win something by Mr. Williams treach•
erous action to hia own party which refused
him the nomination which lie so eagerly
sought at their hands, and the bargain was
struck. But another competitor enters the
field—one who cannot be frightened off, or
bought off, and Mr. Williams sees that he will
be distanced in the race. No wonder that
he squirms at the sudden crushing of all his
hopes. Let him rail on at the Democracy. It
is his vocation, r and has been so for years, to
abuse them. The Democrats have not for
gotten his abuse of them in perhapS the last
public speech he over made before a Republi
can meeting in the city, at the City Hall,
They, recollect how he raved, and roared,
and danced upon the platform, abusing Demo-
cratic men and Democratic measures without
stint. "He stands now on the same platform
where he stood then " —the Black Republi
can platform, and Democrats cannot, and will
pot vote for him. Any man who was but a
/moderate hater of the Democracy, they might
have permitted to run against McKnight with
a clear field—but Thomas Williams—never.
Mr. Birmingham is not a railroad man.
He is as firmly opposed to unjust taxation for
Railroad purposes as Mr. Wiiliams. The
people might safely trust him to fight their'
battle on this question, and he would do it
manfully if it could by any possibility come
within the scope of a k;ongressman's duty.
But the Democracy of the XXIId District
have large interests at stake in measures which
concern the general welfare of themselves and
every citizen in Pennsylvania, and these
they prefer to trust in the hands of Mr. Bir
mingham—a man of their own party—and not
in Mr. Williams Black Republican hands.
Mr. Williams has evidently been engaged in
antanxious inquiry into the minutiae of his des
perate chance of success, for he wants to know
who will print Mr. Birmingham's tickets ?
If it will comfort him any in his sore - discoms
fiture, we will inform him that there is an
active and energetic Vigilance Committee at
work in the Twenty-Second District, who will
attend to all these little matters, such as pro,
curing and distributing tickets, securing mon
to stand at the polls, issuing handbills for pub
lic meetings, &e. Indeed this committee have
already done some work. There wa , a
Democratic mretin , in the Phiiii. , nd in All,.
gheny City on Thursday night, at which
udge Staler. edge Slihnnon and others
made speeches, and the true and faithful
Dernoeratio spirit exhibited there does not
seen' to meet the nl pr.hati..n of either Mr.
Williams or the True Press. They had a re.
Porter on the ground, but he most have lost
his notes, for the Irue Press does not s ti r a
i
word about the meeting. Perhaps
porter was astonished at the discovery that
the Democracy of the Twenty' Second District
were alive to their own interests, and were
so, unanimously determined to support their
own candidate and resolved to "sink the
item concerning the meeting." Who knows ?
There was - a meeting also, at Butler on
Friday night, at which Judge Shaler, Judge
Shannon, R. Bice Roberta, Esq., Captain
Birmingham and others were present.
The Butler Democrats Lave rot been su
fered to remain in ignorance of who their can
didate is, and of his merits.
Mr. Williams may rest assured that the
"documents have been circulated," and that
the tickets will be both circulated and voted
too.
ANDBLE w BURKE, SHILL
We have the most favorable accounts
from every portion of the Twenty-first Die-.
trict for our Congressional candidate. The
people know his talent, and appreciate his
character. The Opposition have in vain tried
to find a point at which they might assail Mr•
Burke. They cannot do it, for he is the man
for the position, and so much dividel are the
Opposition ranks, that in spite of their may
jority iu the District, there can be no doubt
of Mr. Burke's triumphant election.
111 R J. 13. ROBERTS
This distinguished tragedian will play an
engagement at Porter's Theatre, commencing
next week. This is his first visit to this city
since his return from England, where he met
with unqualified professional success. The
elegant, accomplished, and fascinating Capt.
F. D. May, who now occupies the position of
agent for Mr. Roberts, has already arrived
in
this city to arrange matters for the engages
ment.
Mr. Roberta is a most excellent legitimate
actor of the sclual of which Booth is the great
exemplar, and during his engagement, some
of the finest plays in the English language
will be presented.
