RIPPE Y PENNSYLVANIA STATE FAIR. - FAIR GROUNDS--NINTH WARD TUESDAY, SEPTEMEER 28 WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 29; THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 80; 6022.8ttisltiv and FRIDAY, OCTOBER 1, 1858 LOCAL AFFAIRS. The Coming Slat o pair. On Saturday morning sec visited the grounds on which the State Far is t . be hold, and were sur prised and gratified at the indications exhibited of ii successful and entertaining Fair. Quito a number of improvements aro being made on the grounds, and everything which can contribute to the comfort of visitors will be dune. Additions have also beep made to sovecal of the buildings. A hall forty feat long by twenty-four, called Ma. chinest's Hall, has been erected. A steam engine, manafactured by Was. Barnhill 46. Co., Is erected in this building, with shalt running from end to and for propelling machinery ty s cam. At the farther end wings have Leen erected, increasing the width to for. ty feet, both of which aro, we are informed, to he used as a receptacle for sowing machines, which are to be worked by steam power. Floral Hall has been enlarged to accommodate all, and its dimonaions are one hundred and ten feat by eighty. A constant supply of water has been con- • voyed to the grounds, and it is contemplated to erect a jet or fountain in the middle of the halt, with con cealed music, which will add much to the attructive ness of this department. Mr. M'Ken., boa reserved one hundred feet here for his plants, and numerous others will have fine specimens. Alex. R. Reed has made an addition of fourteen feet in length to Domestic Hal!, fur the exhibition of Wheeler .t Wilson's Sewing Machines, for which he is the agent in this city. A number et girls will be employed in operating these machines. Artists' Hall bids fair to be the point for a fine display. We learn that the fine family group by Emil Forster, Esq., which has attracted su much at tention at former State and County Fairs, will be on exhibition. Mayor Weaver will also place in this de partment the " Rogues' Gallery," from his office. This is a good idea, as it will give many strangers visiting here a knowledge of the general apps arenas of the thieve a, pickpockets, etc., which infeal the country, and place them on their guard against them. The stalls erected for cattle, horses, ahoep and pigs, have been found insufficient to accommodate all, the great majority of them being already taken, and earpenters were engaged on Saturday in putting up a large number of additional pens for sheep and pigs. Near the entrance to the grounds a shod has boon erected for the purpose of showing the practical working of the concentrated lye in the manufacture of soap, which will be illustrated by the conducting of the process in the building. Near by, another small building has been erected by private enterprise, in which a new method of pre serving meats and vegetables will be exhibited, The exhibitor has, we are informed, already sold the building and the right for this vicinity. Quito a number of choice fowls are already on the ground, the property of Mr. Dorwart, of Lan• caster, consisting of the finest varieties of ducks, geese and chickens. Several entries have been made in this department, and it Is tound that it will be tie cossary to double the space occupied by poultry. Mr. Taggart, the Secretary of the Society, who is a thorough Agriculturalist, will exhibit over one hun dred bead of fowls, weighing from thirteen pounds to thirteen ounces. A sufficient police force, consisting of thirty -seven officers for day, and eight for night service, haw boon employed to preserve order on the ground—a difficult task in such a large and motley oollection of people. Outside the grounds, the usual number of wooden sheds, booths, dr.-0., are being erected ; indeed, the vicinity presents the appearance of a primitive West ern town. We presume solid refreshments only will be sold at these 'stands, as the Mayor has issued his proclamation, announcing to the owners of these shanties and others that the laws of the Common wealth relative to the sale of intoxicating liquors will be rigidly enforced. The programme for the four days of the pair has not yet been arranged, and we can only say what will be the probable attractions each day. Tuesday, as usual, will be spent in organizing. The Judges will moot at three o'clock in the after noon, when all the vacancies will be tilled. On Wednesday, they again assemble et nine in the morning, proceed to the examination of the different articles on oghibition, and award the ?re mitting. Thursday will be devoted to the exhibitien of stook in the rings, when the spocd of the h,,rnoa will he tasted. SCl7E:Weft PuLUONIC S TRU?, an agency for which has been established at the Drug and Medicine Depot of Da. GEORGE H. Kars's% at 140 Wood street. It is used entirely in diseases of the lungs, liver and pulmonary apparatus and in those cases of groat prostration, where most of the medicines for lung difficulty cannot be used, this simple and efficient remedy is [Weedy safe. Dr. Keyser has had considerable experience with Dr. Sehenck'e medicines, and will give his individual attention in prescribing it when desired. He baYB that he has known very many cases of pulmonary and bronchial diseases relieved with this medicine, after every other treatment had failed to do any good. Dr. Schenck proposes, during the present fall, to visit Pittsburgh, for the purpose of examining patients, and until then be would refer thus in want of hi? medicines to his agent, who will give every needful attention. He also makes an invaluable medicine in dyspeptic cares known by the name of "Sea Weed Tonic." Pr. Schenok's Medicines are all good, be• cause experience has proven their efficacy. One ad vantage they have, that they are perfectly he mless, being composed chiefly of roots and herbs. 4 Pow??Lau 4- Co :—My wife was troubled with cough and pain in the breast for dye years--the last two of which she was very low indeed. Wo learn from the Columbus Stockman, of Thurs. day, the particulars of a most shocking crime—the Murder of four children by their mother, who threw them into a well and them jumped in herself. The name of the family is Schilling, living In Jackson township, Frankln county. The • deed was done in the night while the husband and father was absent at a wedding. No possible motive can be assigned foi the deed, and it is the general impression among the neighbors that Mrs. Schilling was insane. Neigh bors passing the house, which is a misserable log cabin, standing about a quarter of a mile from the main road. say that they hoard the mother and her children sidging a hymn about ten o'clock at night. The husband and father, it seems, did not return from the wedding party until daylight, and before that time a lady neighbor, having occasion to draw water from the well, had discovered the bodies of Sirs. Schilling and the four children floating on the surface. The children were a boy of ten years. and the throe girls aged respectively twelve, five and two years. The mother was aged thirty.sis. Aquatic Sporting,—"On Saturday afternoon two races tuok place over the Monongahela course, which, however, excited little attention in sporting circles. The first was between the " Jo French " and " J. P. Brelaford," in which the latter was beaten a few lengths. Soon afteward two crafts, of the flat bot tom or scow order, the " Old Dad," manned by Fifth Ward boys, and the " Capt. Evans," manned by " Pipetown Rats," made their appearance on the course, and rowed to the Point and back fhe re soli of the race was that the "OA Dad " was beat en by twine thirty seconds. The time of these races was au poor that we will not report it. A third race was announced, between the " R. R. Rodgers " and " J. S. Dalt," but a story baring got wind that the race was to be gold, a bargain having been made by sone of the oarsmen, the " Hall" did not make her appearance. The " Rodgers " rowed over the oourse and claimed the purse. The "Rod gers ' had put up $lOO, and the "Hall" $75. The judges have not yet decided whether the " Rodgers " is entitled to the money. It will most probably be a question for the New York Clipper or Porter's Spirit. Homicide in Lawrence County.—A man named Charles Barber, a citizen of Lowell, Ohio, was killed on Wednesday afternoon last, in Mahoning township, Lawrence county, on the Lowel road about one and a half miles above Edenbnrg, by Muse Elrod, of North Beaver township. It appears that Barber in. tended to remove from Lowell to Lawrence county, and for that purpose had engaged Elrod, with his team, to move his furniture. While on their way they procured some liquor—drinking and riding to• gather in the wagon—a misunderstanding ensued— Elrod tarnod his team to go back—Barber struck Elrod, who in turn struck Barber with his fist, after which ho took the board used for a seat, struck him over the head and knooked him out of the wagon. Not attempting to rise after he fell, Elrod became alarmed, stopped his team, fearing that he was badly Injured. lie lifted him up in a sitting position, when, after breathing twice, Barber fell back insensi ble and died soon afterward. Elrod gave himself up and is now in prison awaiting trial. He expires. ass deep contrition for the unfortunate oeourrence. Barber was a married man, but left no children. A cloud Commercial Education iB, to this country, a fortune to any young man of sober, steady habits. The constantly increasing demand for clerks, caused by the increasing commercial business of the country, and the opening up of new avenues for trade by railroads, has caused the establishment of commer eial colleges exclusively devoted to the object of preparing young men for the native pursuits of bust• noes life. The Iron City Commercial College in this city, which has for some years been oonduoted with emmino❑t ability and great success by Messrs. F. W.
