LOCAL AFFAIRS.
The Murder at Willlamsbarg.
We stated in Friday's issue that a serious affray
had taken place, ab lye the encampment, at Williams •
burg, in which a man named Charles Maguire was
so seriously injured as to endanger his life. At a
late hour on Thursday night, too late for publication,
we learned that Maguire had died from the injury
inflicted, having been quite unconscious from the
time of its infliction. Tne Coroner was sent for im
mediately after his decease, and an inquest held on
hie body.
From the evidence taken before the jury, it would
seem that James Cahoe and Maguire were quarrel!.
ing, when John Cahoo came up and struck Maguire
with a hatchet, club, or other weaCon, which he held
in both hands. Dr. Walters testified that the wound
on the head was produced by a club, stone, or smooth
iron instrument, fracturing the skull, broakingit into
number of pieces, which were forced in upon the
brain. He bad no doubt that his death ensued from
the wound.
-- - •
The jury returned a verdict that Maguire came to
hie death from the effects of a blow on the bead, in
flicted with some heavy weapon in the needs of Jobe
Cahoo.
As we have before stated, Cahoo tl -I immediately
after the striking of the fatal blow, and has not been
soon since. The officers despatched in pursuit of
him have been unable to obtain any 'nom of his
whereabouts, or the direction he took. It is inure
than probable that he will ho captured.

weather of last evening would have told on the 'au

perceptible effect, for the house was reasonably filled.

Trimlanyq, is with plossure:that we rola
our readers to the advertisement, in another column,
of Joseph Home, No. 67 Market street. He has
just replenished his stock, and it embraces all arti
cles usually sold in such establishments, from the
cheapest ribbon to the most expensive dress patterns.
To our ladies in the city, it useless to say a word in
his favor, but to strangers visiting the city We can
cordially recommend this old and well known estab
lishment, assuring them that any article purchased
of Mr. Horne will be exactly as represented, and that
in prices he is undersold by none.
Theatre.—Tho Hutchinson Brothers are still ex
citing the wonder of all visitors at the Theatre by
their most extraordinary gymnastic performances.
Other attractions in the dramatic way are also pre
sented. For the young folks and ladies aovernor
Porter offers an attractive bill this afternoon, and we
think will take advantage of the oppotnnity afforded
them to see these great acrobats. A fine progralneao
is also offered for the evening.
Returned.—Mr. John P. Pears, of the firm of
Bakewell, .I)ears 4; Co., who has been absent in
Europe for some four or five months; returned to
the city yesterday morning, having arrived in the
Persia last week. He has been traveling for his
health, which has been materially benefited by his
trip.

To night is the Sacred Oratorio to be performed by
the Formes Troupe, with full orchestra.
It is an era among lovers of sacred song, being
the first Oratorio ever performed entire in Pitts- ,
burgh. Wo have had societies who have performed
parts of it, and the late Philharmonic gave nearly
all, but with only an apology for an orchestra, with -
out which no Oratorio is complete. Now, we have a
skillful conductor—a perfect orchestra—a fine chor
us of our own amateur vocalists, and a quartette for
solos of ansurpaesed excellence.
To hear Perring with the opening recitative,
" Comfort ye my People," is but to soften the feel
ings to a proper appreciation of the raj Acing at
Christ's advent, and prepare them for the succeed
ing events of his life.
We know not how Miss Andem will render the solo
" I Know that my Redeemer Liveth," but we feel
confidence in hor refinement of taste and feeling.
Of Formes, in the magnificent solo, with trumpet
accompaniment, "The Trumpet Shall Bound," we
can only wish the moment had arrived to hoar it.
Madame Schuman has also her impressive solo.
We hero state a feature in Oratorio music—an es
tablished rule—that there be no repetition. The
length of the subject forbids it.
Clothing.—An old and well regulated eetablishment
is that of Mr. R. Chester, on Wood street. He is at
all times prepared to apparel the outer man in the
heighth of fashion, and pays particular attention to
boys' clothing. He has at present a full stock on
band, and purchasers should call and see him.
Committed—Lewis Jaokcnn, the colored man who
made such a dosperuta attempt to cut hia wife's throat

THESE PILLS
HAVE NOW, TO A
limited extent, been before the public in this section
of the country for a period of over twenty years, and from
the fact of their not being more generally known through.
out the length and breadth of the land, it might, perhaps,
be inferred that Oleg are lacking In some of the great essen•
tints of a family Medicine, or that there are other Pills their
superior, sic.; test each, ho, iver, is not the rase, their sup
ply irsan a want of disposition or ability, on the part of the
or igi al props , 'eta-, (Dr. Wilson,) was always limited to such
au extent as at times to render it difficult to fill home orders,
but with even this disadvantage wherever need they have
never failed to call forth the strongest testimony in their
favor—testimony in many instances unsolicited—not gotten
up expressly for publicity—but freely proffered to the in
ventor as expressions of gratitude for the great benefits de
rived from the use of these truly - wouderibi Pills, in proof of
which we subjoin the following:—
We, the subscribers, Ministers of the Gospel, and members
of the Pittsburgh Annual Conferee:is of the Methodist Epis
copal Church, having each and all of us, during the put
few years, had frequent opportunities of learning and trying
the character of Dr. R. A. Wilson's Tonic, Cathartie„ and
Anti-Dyspeptic PllLr, are prepared to, and now stata with
pleasure, in this communication, thai we know them:to be
au excellent medicine, and, as such, recommend their use
to our friends and acquaintances, not only as a specific for
Sick-Headache and Dyspepsia for which they are recom
mended, but as a safe family remedy among children, and
for the prevention and removal of Bilious attacks, etc.

Da. Wu.sont-1 I myself a thousand times obliged to
you. I have for some years been afflicted with the dyspep
sia and, from the good effects already produced by your
pills in my case, I am persuaded that the continued use of
them will finally effect a thorough cure; I therefore, wish
you to send me four boxes by the bearer of this, and oblige
yours, etc. ISRAEL SHARP.
Extract of a letter from Col. Camp, an elderly gentleman of

I do most earnestly hope that you will adopt some plan
to supply us with your most excellent Anti• Dyspeptic Pill.
I have boon in the as bit of using it myself, and in my faml•
ly, from the time you first brought them into use in our
neighborhood, and upon all occasions have found theln to
apwer the purpose for which they were administered , M 7
wife has been very much afflicted with sick-headache, and,
by using ono-half of on of the pills, has uniformly found
relief. I think it superfluous to enumerate the different
complaints for which I have administered these pills. Suf
fice it to say that, s far as the numerous complaints set out
In the wrapper have fallen under my notice, the pill has had
the desired effect in removing the same; and so far as my
self have been concerned, I can say that they leave the
bowels in Dotter order than the use of any other cathartic
that I have used,

W C.! ELLIOTT,
THE first place in publio estimation is zum
jnatly accorded to tho GROVER & BAKER 14f.A.
CHINE, for family klewing, for the following reasons;
Ist. It is MORE srupLu and EASILY SEPT IN ORDER
than any other macine.
2d. It makes a team which will NOT RIP or &Min,
though every third stitch is cut.
Bd. It sews from too ordinary spool, and thus all trouble
of winding thread lal avoided, while the same Machine can
be adapted, at ple , e , ure, by a more change of spools, to all
varieties of work.
4th. The adnadhine runs silk, linen thread and spool
Mi na
cotton, with equal f *y.
6th. The seam is 43 elastic as the most elastic &brio, so
that it is free from au LIABILITY to BEEAS, in WA.I3/1-
LNG, IRONING, or Chemise.
6th. The stitch cande by this Machine is more BEAUTI
FUL than any crtheri made, either by hand or machine.
