LOCAL AFFAIRS.
The First Ward Shooting Affair.
Thomas Smithson, Jr., the young man who shot
Miss Eleanor Henry, on Saturday, the 10th inst., at
the residence of her mother, in the First Ward, was
brought before Mayor Weaver for a preliminary
examination yesterday morning. The faot that the
heariog was to take place being generally known, a
large crowd was in attendance at the• office. The
prisoner, who has a very youthful appearance, did
not seem in the least disconcerted by the crowd of
anxious - spectators present.
The Mayor stated that the first question was to
ascertain whether Miss !leery was entirely out of
danger, and Dr. George L. M'Cook %as accordingly
called. He testified that he has seen Miss Henry
daily since the occurrence, and has had her in charge
since Sunday last. He could not say, however, that
she was out of danger. I; was true that she has
been improving rapidly, but there is yet danger from
inflammation, as the wound is at present discharging
very freely. He could not say when the danger
would be over; she might continue in her present
condition for weeks—perhaps until the first of No
vember.
Under these 'circumstances, Mayor Weaver ad
journed the hearing until Saturday, October 2d, at
10 o'clock in the morning, when, should Miss Henry's
case assume a definite aspect, a further examination
will be had. Smithson was then remanded to jail
until that time.

John M. Kirkpatrick, Esq., appeared as private
counsel for the Commonwealth, in behalf of Mrs.
Harriet Henry, mother of the young lady.
Camp Duquesne.
The concourse of people on tho camp ground yes
terday was greater than at any time since the en,
campment commenced. This interest was created
by the fact that the company turning out the most
members was to be presented with a flag, according
to arrangement. At nine o'clock, this presentation
took place, and the Monongahela Artillery baring
the largest number of men at the encampment, some
fifty-six in all, being entitled to the prize, a splendid
silk flag, it was presented to them in an appropriate
speech, by Capt. James S. Kegley, of the Pennsyl
vania Infantry.
After the presentation, the companies formed for
drill, and were put through the various evolutions by
Brigadier General Snodgrass and his staff, assisted
by Col. Heitz, Adjutant Kane and Captain Nogley.
At half-past ten the review ceased, and the soldiers
were ordered to their tents to prepare for parade in
the afternoon.
At one o'clock the roll was again called, the entire
camp having in the meantime refreshed the inner
man, and donned their fall dress uniform, and at
four o'clock, after going through variouv:manmuvres
on the camp ground, the entire battalion, "horse,
foot and dragoons," was on this side of the river.
They marched through the principal streets of the
city, presenting a very fine appearance and attract
ing general admiration. At five o'clock they had
finished the prescribed route, and all embarked for
the camp ground. .
To-day will wind up this military demonstration,
and the " gallant hussars" will return to their homes
and resume their peaceful avocations, doubtless much
improved by the military discipline they have expe
rienced hero, and their visit to this city.
Country litswi.
A little son of Mr. Read, residing in Kerrville,
and aged about two years, was severely scalded, on
Saturday morning last, by falling into a bucket of
boiling water which .had been left standing on the
floor, as to produce its "death in a few hours after the
occur:ones. The poor child had bees amusing itself
walking backward and hauling a little wagon after
it, and while ao engaged had stumbled into the back.
et, fr..m which it was only extricated after injuries
sufficient to produce death had been inflicted.

Fearful peath.—We have this morning to record a
terrible end of a very Worthy young man, one who
bad many frignds, Mr, Daniel Pay, of Birmingham.
At an early hour yesterday morning his body was
discovered lying near the Pittsburgh abutment. of
the Birmingham bridge, his neck brcken, and his
body limb bruised. The Coroner was immediately.
summer ad and held an Inquest on the body. but
nothing concerning the manner or time of his death
could be elicited.' The jury simply returned a ver
dict of accidental death. We arc, therefore, left to
Conjecture that he was endeavoring to cross over the
unfinished bridge at some time during Wednesday
night, and that while so doing -,ho fell thr9gli the
tressel work to the rocks below, some fifty feet, and
was instantly killed. His _untimely less will be
heard with sorrow by many. ; •

Grand Oratorio.
Karl Formes, who was so enthusiastically received
in his first concert last evening, though ranking high
as a concert singer, is said to su rpass himself in the
execution of oratorios, where his powerful voice can
have the fullest scope. Many of our citizens have
expressed an earnest desire to hear him, with the
proper orchestra and chorus accompaniments, in ono
of those great productions which have exalted the
admiration of all. In accordance with this desire, he
has consented to bear his part in that great master
piece, the oratorio of the Messiah. The performance
will take place on Saturday evening, when he
will be assisted by Misa Hattie Andem, Madame
Schuman, Ernest Pairing, and the entire orchestra
under Karl Ansbutz. The chcresas will bu sung by
amateurs of the city. Altogether the entertainment
will be one of the grandest ever offered in the city,
and we feel assured it will be abundantly patronized.
A Soldier Gone.—Mr.,Alexamior Stewart, of Alle
gheny city, who served his country In the Mexioan
war, as a sergeant in the "Jackson Independent
Blues," died at Lads Poat Office, Munroe county,
Ohio, of consumption, on Friday last, while on a vis.
it to a relativei — Re was a tanner by trade, but has
latterly been employed by the Pittsburgh and Cleve
land Railroad Company, as watchman. He leaves a
large family, who are said to be In destitute eircum

Paulsen.—We h . ave seen a letter from the great
chess player, Paulson, who has accepted the invita
tion of our chess club, and states that he can come
about the twentieth of next month. Tho time does
not suit the members, and they have written, ❑4king
him to fix another time, in December or January.
IVe aro informed that he Is to play tin games blind
folded. We have some tine players hare, and he
must look to his laurels.
Fatal Railroad Accident.—A woman, who has for
some time past been considered insane, was killed on
the Pittsburgh, Fort Wayne and Chicago Railroad,
near Orville station, Tuesday morning, by the freight
train bound east; the engineer saw her standing near
a post by the side of the road as the train was ap
proaching, and a moment after saw her head severed
from her body rolling on the ground by the lido of
the train. tier body was literally " cut to pieced."
No blame is attached to any one on the train.
Theatrical.—The Hutchinson Brothers, the oele
brated gymnasts, who perform-the most wonderful
feats, aro still at the Theatre. Last night they drew
a fine audience, and were cordially received. This
evening they appear again, and a good bill is also
offered besides. We observe that Gov. Porter has
adopted our suggestion, and advertises a day per , .
fon:mance on Saturday afterooon, for the benefit of
ladles and children. We predict a large audience.
Shocking Calamity.—A building was destroyed in
Osnaburgh, Ohio, one evening last week, iu which a
man, his wife and child were burned to death. Be
fore the fire was discovered by the citizens, it had
made so much progress as to render it impossible to
save the inmates of the 'lonia, and all perished in
the dames.
The Atlantic Barge Club, owners of the "Old Dad,"
have accepted the challenge of the " Wad Rabbit "
club, and a race is to come off on Saturday after
noon, over the Monongahela course, for $lOO a hide,
between the " Captain &dile and '• Old Dad."
We anticipate lota of foe.
