This encampment is now in progress, having been regularly opened yesterday morning, a number of companies having arrived on Monday night. The number of companies in attendance is eleven, num bering three hundred and fifty men. We copy the following list from the Chronicle of yesterday:— The Washington Infantry, Pittsburgh, Col. Rowley, thirty two men. The Pennsylvania Infantry, East Liberty, thirty five men. The Jefferson Cavalry, Jefferson township, Col. Hiram Haltz. The Independent Blues, Pittsburgh, Capt. Alex. Hay, thirty men. The National Guards, Birmingham, Capt. Dine roth, thirty men. The Montgomery Guards, Birmingham, Capt. Gul liver, thirty men. The Monongahela Artillery, Monongahela city, Capt. Cooper, forty-eight men. The' Union Artillery, Lower St. Clair township, Capt. Large, thirty mon. The Pennsylvania Blues, St. Clair ,o isrhip, Capt. Espey, twenty seven men. The Allegheny Rifles, Allegheny, Capt. Hardt mayer, thirty-five mon. The Turtle Creek Guards, Turtle Creek, Capt. M'Maetere, thirty men. The tents, which are the same as those used at the Ciriiliamsport encampment, are about one hundred and fifty in number, and will accommodate all the military expected to be in attendance. The Scott Legion join the encampment today, and wo under-. stand that the whole encampment contemplate tura ing opt on parade to. day or to-morrow. Strict military discipline is enforced hero, a speci men of which. was exhibited en Monday night. There is a law making it an offense to sell liquor or boar in any unlicensed house within a mile of a mil itary encampment. A number of lager beer eellera had pitched their touts in the vicinity of the camp ground, and a detachment was turned out by the offteers, who arrested some twenty-four of them and conveyed them under guard to the lock-up. Here they were kept till yesterday morning, when some were bold to bail for trial at Court and others dia. charged. Another man having struck a guard, ho was forth with court martialed, kept till morning, and then sent to jail. It is rumored that the encampment will break up on Friday morning, ending in a sham battle, but we cannot vouch for the accuracy of the latter. Annual Target Excursion The annual target excusion, at which the different volunteer companies will contend for a medal, com memorating tho raising of the siege of Puebla, on the 6th of October, will take place at East Lib erty, on the anniversary of that memorable<day, two weeks from to‘day. This medal, which is composed of gold and silver, in the shape of a star, and called the " Allegheny County Volunteer Target Medal," was presented by the Washington InfantrOlast October, to a camber of the Pennsylvania Infantry, who made the best string measure then. Ho has had possession of the medal during the year, and it will now be put up the second time. Each company selects live privates, who shall re. pair, under command of a sergeant, to the spot se• !acted for the contest, equipped in their respective uniforms, and each bearing a United States musket. They are to fire five shots each, at a distance of one hundred yards, and the shortest skiing to take the medal. The Brigadier General and Brigade Inspector are to act as Judges, with any other persons they may choose to select. The marksmen will take precedence in firing at the target according to the ago of their respective companies, tho company presenting the medal to dollle last, The Pennsylvania Infantry, under the regulagens, will have the arrangement of the excursion this year. At the first contest, six companies partici pated ; this year there will probably be more, as the excursion is now becoming a "fixed fact." The occasion will doubtless ha ape of interest to all who may attend, and productive of beneficial results to our volunteer soldiery. A .1' ova Suggestion--Hentlug by Gar The Albany Knickerbocker says that a now build ing is being erected in that city, which a Mr. Pepper has proposed to not only light, but heat by gas. Mr. Pepper gots up his heat by passing gas through sand. If the gas be directed into the body of the sand it will instantly diffuse itself through tho entire mass, and, rising to the surface, may, with perfect safety, bo instantly set on fire, with a match, the flame coo ing the whole surface of the sand with a pure flame, without smoke, no matter how large the extent of the flame, and with perfect and complete combustion. The host is also instantaneously diffused through the entire mass of sand, heating it equally throughout, and requiring but ono minute of time to heat the sand to such intense temperature that it will retain its heat fox hours after the gas is shut off, and the light extinguished. Thera can be no doubt that the gas required to light a room will also bo sufficient to heat it. Mr. Pepper clams that two cents' worth of gas will heat a sufficient quantity of sand rod hot to keep a room warm in winter eight hours. This now system is worth a trial. It' it be true, it will be a valuable invention, though here, whore fuel is so abundant and cheap, it would be of little ad vantage, except for the facility with which it could be introduced into apartuientc, Summary Changi, ement.—Qui to an excitement was created on the Monongahela wharf, yesterday even ing, by a cowl:tiding affair which took plane on poard the steamer Belmont. It would seem that a certain steamboat watchman, who had been ousted from a situation by the mete of another boat, now lying at the wharf, had slandered tho fair fame of the better-half" of the latter, who, not relishing the circulation of such reports, wished to punish the detractor. Procuring a cowhide, ho proceeded to the Belmont, where be found kis matt, Taking him into the engine room, he applied the hide vigorously, until the watchman was nearly exhausted, having been under the lash POMO ton or fifteen minutes. On being released, bruised and bleeding, ho btarted to go ashore, and was foikwed by the mate, whore be gave the watchman a blow which carried hint into the water. lathering himEelf up, he made bis way hove. The verdict of the public is, that if it be true that he ciretilated base reports cee-erning the lady, he got no mere than he deserved. A Banking Firm Charged with Fraud.—A or,„d: of the late firm of Arthurs, Rodgers A Co , bankers at the corner of Smithfield and Fourth streets, John Storkdale by name, appeared before Mayor Weaver on Monday, and made information against Charles (1. Rodgers and William. M. Arthurs two of the members of the late firm, charging them with em. bezzlement and conspiracy. The information seta forth that during two years past these parties have been conspiring, confederating, oombining and agreeing together, by divers false pretences, to cheat and defraud him (Stoekdale) as well as other credit ors, out of a large amount of money. The particu. tar charge, however, is, that on the 22nd of July be entrusted with them for safe keeping, $l5O, which they appropriated to their own use or that of other parties. The gentlemen accused gave bail in the sum of $6OO each, to answer. A Fe-rmaie Thief.—Mrs. E. M. Austin, of •Wheel ing, arrived in this city on Monday evening In search of a girl named Lewis, who had stolen some dresses and other articles from a person at Mrs. Austin's house. It was thought the girl had come to this city, and she was soon found, in company with a fellow named Carney, well known to the police as a pick pocket and sharper . In general. Mrs. Austin and tho girl finally compromised the matter, but Carney was detained until yesterday, when on leav ing a copy of his countenance, to be kept in the rogues' gallery, he was allowed to go on his way. Salo of Tickets.—The sale of tickets to the grand concert at City Hall, to-morrow evening, commenced yesterday morning, and during the day some four hundred tickets were disposed of. This rapid sale is an indication of the :appreciation in which Karl Formes :and: the remainder of this troupe are held, and the anxiety there is to hear them. We have ao doubt but that the Hall will be filled by a fashiona ble and intelligent audience. Seats can still be se• cured to day. Theatrical.—The Hut !neon Brothers appeared at the Theatre, last eve the second time, to a fair audience. Their p 6 ' maces are truly aston ishing, and received marital applause. We should be glad to see them patronised by full houses. They appear again this evening, when the farces of " A Family Failing" and " Perfection" will also be pre sented. Not Yet.—Coroner Alexander informs us that some days must elapse before the proper examina tion can be made, and the necessary tests applied to the stomach of Mrs. Walker. The examination of Arnold before Alderman Steel will not, consequently, take place to.morrow, but must necessarily be de- . layod until the Coroner's jury have rendered a ver dict. Democratic Meeting.—A Democratic meeting will be held at seven o'clock this evening, at Benjamin Stansbury's, on the Washington 'pike, Upper St. Clair Township. The assemblage will be addressed by several speakers. This meeting is to take the place of ono advertised for this evening, at James. O'Conners in the same township. The Democracy of the vicinity promise a good turn out. Bowman it- Co :—My wife was troubled with cough and pain in the breast for five - years—.the last two of which she was very low indeed. A Hard Party. Yesterday afternoon the Mayor received informa tion that a party of young men, some half -dozen in number, were gathered together in a brink-kiln, on Boyd's Hill, in the Sixth Ward, where they were amusing themselves by playing, oldslede? soven-up,- , euchre, or Some other equally interesting game of cards. Ho immediately sent a posse of- officers to arrest thorn. They visited the spot and found the party deeply engrossed in their game, and made a sudden closeout cn them, each officer capturing his man. One individual made hie escape, but In so do ing left hie coat behind, which was taken to the Mayor's office, whore the owner can have it. The reputed owner is the notorious Bill Patch. The names of the party arrested are John Burke, William, alias Baldy Campbell, Thomas Burns, William Walker, Charles Smith, and William, alias "Snibbs" Arnold. The latter gave the ifficers quite a chase, but was captured after a long run. On his apo poarance before the Mayor, it was found that there was a charge against him for larceny, he having been ono of the party, who, with John Montague and Wm. Campbell, stole thirty-seven dollars from Mrs. Catharine Weise, in broad daylight, last week. He was accordingly committed to jail for, trial. The root wore fined $3 each and discharged. The cards wore confiscated, and taken possession of by the Mayor. It-will be remembered that Walker and Smith were with Sheridan at the time Thielman was murdered, in the saw mill in the Ninth Ward. Schenck's Pa/monis Syrup.—This is one of the most valuable medicines in use for all lung diseases, having now been used for ever twenty•tve yours. D. Schenck' owes his own extraordinary good hea:tb to this invaluable preparation, Laving cured himself when very low with pulmonary disease. He has enjoyed robust health ever since and has cured thou sands of others of very severe lung disease. Oce thing about this medicine that makes it popular is its very pleasant taste end entire acceptibility to the most weakened stomach. The stomach that won't digest anything else, with a few doses of Schenck's pennon's and seaweed tonic soon recovers its powers, and there are hundreds now in the vigor of health and life who, without it, would have been borne to untimely graves. Let the consumptive or bronchitis patient not give up hope, bat apply to Schenck's Syrup, and health - will reward his anticipations. Sold at Dr. Keyser's, No. 140 Wood street. Burglary.—On Monday evening, the grocery and variety etere of James Bryan, in Robinson township, about three and a half miles from the city, on the Middletown road, at a place oalled Brodhead ford, on Chartiers creak, was entered by burglars, cod soma three hundred dollars worth of dry geode, jewelry, butter, knives, pistols, tobacco, &c , together with tbir'y dollars in money, taken away. Mr. Bryan came to the oily, gave the Mayor a description of the goods, and detailed the circumstances of their lose. The thieves will probably never bo captured, as their persons or names aro not known to the po, lice. The Nineteen at Masonic Ball. —The company nosy performing at Masonic Hall, though their au•ii encos have decreased 60111 what since last week, ate still doing a fair business. It seems that the pob!ic never get tired of .visiting their entertainments, nod with reason, for they do not heir a repetitim the same old j)kes and songs, but something origin .1 and fresh every evening. Ho was finally identified by the afters of tho Mint as one of the party who committed the robbery, nod was corn., mitred to answor. Chiffle/iges.—lt seems that neither of the races on Saturday were satisfactory to the crews of the respec tive boats engaged in them. We learn that the "Petrel" club have challenged tho " Peerless" for another race for $lOO to $2OO a side; and the Na• tional Barge Clubhavo also challenged the" Holmes" for another race with the " Cassady " for $5OO. It is likely that the former will be accepted, but the latter is couched In such terms that should the " Holmes "accept they must admit that a fraud was practised in the former race. FAHNESTOOK'S VERMIFIIGE, No. 60 corner of Wood and Fourth Streets, THESE PILLS HAVE NOW, TO A limited extent, been before the public In this section of the country for a period of over twenty years, and from the fact of their not being more generally known through out the length and breadth of the land, it might, perhaps, be inferred that they are lacking In some of the great essen • dais of a faa.ily medicine, or that there are other Pills their superior, etc.; nut such, however, is not the case, their sup ply from a want of disposition or ability, on the part of the original proprietor, (Dr. Wilson,) was always limited to such an extent as at times to renderit difficult to fill home orders, but with even this disadvantage wherever used they have never failed to call forth the strongest testimony in their favor—testimony in many instances unsolicited—not gotten op expressly for publicity—lmt, freely proffered to the in ventor m expressions of gratitude for the great benefits de rived front the use of these truly wonderful Pills, in proof of which we subjoin the following:— We, the subscribers, Ministers of the Gospel, and members of the Pittsburgh Annual Oonfereaoe of the Methodist Epic). copal Church, having each and all of us, during the past few yearly had frequent opportunities of learning and trying the character of Dr. IL A. Wilson's Tonic, Cathartic, and Aiati-Dyspeptio Pills, are prepared to, and now state with pleasure, in this communication, that we know them to be an excellent medicine, and, as such, recommend their use to our friends and acquaintances, not only as a specific for dick-Headache and Dyspepsia for which they are recom mended, but as a safe family remedy among children, and for the prevention and removal of Bilious attacks, etc. Revs. Jas. My experience is not es extensive as the expression in the above certificate; bet as far as my opportunity of testing the virtues of Dr. Wilson's Pills has occurred, I cheerfully endorse the sentiment of their superior value. WILLIAM REEVES. From the Dev. 1.8. Hubbard, Ohio, Oct 2 7, 1838, Da. Wltsca:—l feel myself a thousand times obliged to you. I have for some years been afflicted with the dyspep eta and, from the good efrects already produced by your pills in my case, I am persuaded that the continued use of them will finally effect a thorough cure; I therefore, wish you to send me four boxes by the bearer of this, and oblige yours, etc. ISRAEL SHARP. Extract of a letter from Col. Clamp, an elderly gentleman of Virginia, who has raised a numerous family, of some reediest reading, an inu..l experience in the use of medicine. I do moat eareeatly Lope that you will adopt some plan to supply us with your most excellent Auti.Dyspeptic Pill. I have been la the no bit of using it myself, and in my fami ly, from the time you first brought them into use in our neighborhood, and upon all occasions have found them to answer the purpose for which they were administered- My wife has boeu very much afflicted with sick-headache, and, by using ono-tall of on of the pills, has uniformly found relief. I think It superfluous to enumerate the different complaints for which I have adminfatered these pills. Suf fice it to say thut, ea far as the numerous complaints set out In the wrapper have fallen under my notice, the pill has had the desired effect In removing the same; and so far as my self have been concerned, Lcan say that they leave the bowels in better order than Ihe use of any other cathartic that I have used, CARRILAGE MANUFACTORY AND EASTERN REPOSITORY JOSEPH WiIITE RAS JUST RECEIVED AT HIS RE POSITORY. situated near the Two Milo Run, between Pittsburgh and Lawrenceville, a splendid and general assortment of Carriages, Buggies,- kies, etc. His arrangements are such that he Is constantly receiving new and second-hand vehicles, and the public may rely on always finding a gt , od stock on hand.
