Spectra nesting of Councils
A special mooting of Councils was called last eve
ning for the purpose of considekng a report and
resolution from the Water Committee.
In Select Council there was no quorum for the
transaction of business.
In Common Council, President M'Belvy read a
report from the Water Oenamittea, stating that they
had examined the petitions referred to them, and
recommended the laying of water pipes on Watson,
Magee, Morton and Third streets, for which purpose
they asked the passage of the following resolution :
Resolved, That the sum of ono thousafid and fifty
dollars be added to Appropriation No. 8, and that the
same be charged to the contingent fund.
The report was adopted, and on the second reading
of the resolution considerable discussion ensued.
It was etated that the laying of water pipes on
those streets was highly necessary, but
Erratt stated that there we., but XllOO of the
contingent fund remaining, and it shou l d not 1 , 0
hansted by this demand. lie thought the Water
Committee should use the funds in their hands, as he
had learned that the Committee contemplated lend
ing $2500 to the Wharf Committee for completing
the paving of the blonong,ahela
Mr. Barnhill, who reported thu resolution, stated
that lie had beard nothing of this Lan, and that the
Committee had barely sufficient lands to last through
the year.
Objection being made to the resolution on second
reading, a suspension of the rulus was nailed for,
which being lost, the resolution laid over under the
rules.
Mr. 'Arlington offered the following, which was
read three times and passed :
Resolved, That all persona petitioning for grading
or paving streets, lanes and alleys, and also for con
structing sewers, are required, before their petitions
are presented to Councils, to publish said petitions,
with signatures, in a conspicuous place in two et the
daily English papers.
Mr. Morris presented the following :—
Resolved, That one hundred dollars be taken from
appropriation No. 7, for paving street crossings, and
added to appropriation No. 7, for repaving of streets,
for the purpose of repaving Centre avenue, in the
Seventh Ward.
Read throe times and p3s3ed.
Mr. Sargent the following, which was passed •

Mr. Dickson the following, which was laid over
under the rules, a suspension of the ralo being call
ed for and lost :

to lay water pipes on Morton street and charge the
same to appropriation No. 6.
Mr. Darlington moved the reconsideration of his
resolution relative to the advertising of ordinances,
which motion was carried, when ha offered the same

The Erie City Diepatch says that on last Saturday
week, while a Mr. Ferguson was plowing near six
mile creek, in Harborcreek township, Erie county, a
colored man entered the field with a gun in scarab of
game. He fired at a squirrel and the report of hie
gun frightened the horses of Mr. Ferguson. causing
them to run off, -breaking the plow, .4.!. Ferguson
approached the negro and told him that he nhuald be
more careful in future and not discharge his gun in
the presence of horses. Some words ensued when
the negro told F. that he would as soon shoot him,
and brought his gnu to his shoulder and fired it, the
shot taking effect in the breast of Ferguson's coat,
without wounding him. Ferguson had a shot gun on
the premises and when he got hold of it fired it,
without effect, at the retreating negro, who made
good his escape by entering the woods.

Larceny of Overcoats.—A fellow Daraol Jobu
Stott, who tries to pass himself off as "Scotty of
Brooklyn," was arrested on Sunday by the Mayor's
police, on a charge of larceny, which consisted in
stealing, from a boarding house on High street, four
overcoats, belonging to different peraone. The
ocor
coat worn by the prisoner was identified by John
Stewart, a boarder at the house, as his piupecty, and
another coat belonging to another boarder.
Scott was very marry while in the tombs, i.iniorig
all the while. He has a fine voice, and claims to
have belonged to several bands of Ethiopian Melo
diets, but those posted in such matters sty this is a
fabrication. He also professed to be a prize fighter,
and was amidous to indulge hie pugilistic pi upesities
while et the Mayor's vice, saying that he could
" put any ens of his size through in tut:: mici, tes
by the watch." He acknowledged the tau tag of the
coats, and was lodged in Jail to await his trial. He
will probably get a term in the Penitentiary.

Charged with Parioining a Letter. - Silas J Cover,
an individual well known here in connection wi,h the
abortionist, Mrs. Gardiner, was committed t,. jail on
Sunday, on a charge of detaining, secreting and um
bez7ling a letter addressed to Jacob Miltenberger,
which contaioed some bank notes, The latter was
abstracted from the mail at Davidsvi 10, Somerset
county, whore the post office is kept in Clover's store.
Cover was arrested by Marshal Stewart, In Philo
delphia, who brought him here and handed him over
to Marshal Dougherty, for trial at the nest term of
the United States Court. U. S. Commissioner 13e.e.-
son lodged a commitment against Cover, yesterday,
on which he will be.kept in oustedy until the sitting
of the Court, unless Judge Irwin in tee meantime
should admit him to bail. The evidence against
Cover is said to be strong.
Rencontre.—We loarn that a perional difficulty
occurred yesterday, at the °Mee of the True Preer,
in which Mr. John M. Perkins, a paw dealer of
Wood street, was roughly handled by John B. Ken
nedy. It appears that Mr. Perkins visited the of
fice for the purpose of collecting a paper bill, when
high words ensued and Kennedy struok Mr. Porkies
in the face and afterward kicked him down stairs,
the affair having taken place in the second story.
Mr. Perkins has instituted 6 - nit against Kennedy in
the Distriot Court, claiming damages in the sum of
$5OO.
Drawn Rata.-11r. Charles IL Paulson, to whom
the contested retie between the Casaady and Holmes,
on Saturday, was referred for decision, has, we are
informed, decided the race to be drawn, and that the
money staked by Mail dab be refunded. This de
cision will probably give more general satisfaction
than any other, as awarding the purse to either party
would have caused bad feeling on the other side.
The Minstrels.—The Morris Brothers, Pell and
Trowbridge Minstrels played to another excellent
audience at -Masonic Hall, last evening, there being
but few spare seats. This company is certainly de
serving of the success they have met with in this
city, for their jokes and witticisms, sottin,g aside
the superior music they discourse, and the highly ar
tistic dancing of Dick Sliter, are alone worth the
price of admission. They announce a new and
varied programme this evening, introducing the
" Cow•bell o-gi-ans," and other novelties.
Premium Sewing MacAine.—ln Saturday's Chros,
icle we find an article with the above caption, in re
ference to the Wheeler 4: Wilson Sewing Machine, at
the Wheeling Fair. We suppose the gentleman that
was the author of that item was not aware that the
Wheeler & Wilson was the only machine on exhi
bition, and consequently drew the prize. There was
no Grover .t Baker machine on exhibition or it
would have been different. It is not necessary that
the Grover A Baker should bo shoved into all the
county fairs to effect their sales; the merits of the
mail:Lino are quite sufficient for that purpose, as the
agent is unable to get them from the manufacturers
fast enough to supply the demands of purchasers,
having sold over four thousand dollars worth within
the last ninety days. W. C. ELLIOTT,
Agent for Grover t Baker,

Terrible Accident at the Ohio State Fair,
—Two Persons Killed and Several
•
Wounped.
The enjoyment of those visiting the Ohio State
Fair, now being held at Sandusky City, was sadly
marred by an aeoldent last week, whirl should be a
lesson to the directors and managers of such exhibi
tion hereafter.
A large number of persons had collected outside
of a ring, formed by posts with a single board nailed
across, in which a class of horses were being shown
through their paces. The speototors, the drivers,
the riders and the horses wore all excited, whin a
largo black herbs, attached to a sulkey, became uo•
managebis, aril ran off. Fcr n time the crowd stood
up to the enclosure, and kept the iufuriated animal
inside, but on his making for the crowd near the
ladies' gallery they fled in all directions. Thu
frightened animal atebir heels, tore the fence
away in his oauree, nd was now in a space where
probably not loss than five thousand persons, men,
women and children, were collected. Ho fled dowti a
narrow alley beneath the ladies gallery, and there
trampled under toot several persons. Among these
was an old man named Malllek, residing near San
dusky, a child in some manner related to Mr: M.,
and a young lady, The two former were fatally in
jured and died soon after. 'The lady was seriously
bun. Several other trifling accidents occurred, bet
no one was seriously injured.
Directors of fairs would do well to look to the :e
ourity of enclosures, and prevent such acoidant,.

A flood Joke About that Premium at Wheeling.—
In reply to an article that appeared in your paper
yesterday morniug, in relation to Grover A; Baker's
Sewing Machines, Mr. Rend comes out in yesterday
evening's Chronicle in an article that is not only
ridiculous, but absurd. He states that the idea of
comparing the two machines is ridiculous ;" but at
the same time wi) know to a certainty that Mr. Reed
would on no 4cooisnt stand a fair trial of the two
machines, as be bee repeatedly acknowledged to
other parties the superiority of Grover 6 Baker's.
The funny assertion that he makes in regard to the
$12,000 investment requires no comments, being on
a par with the story told by a boy of having seen on
a fence rail Bye thonsand turkeys. I would also
state to the public that the machines I sell are never
returned, and persons who have purchased would not
resell at double the price. Not so with Wheel r
Wilson's, as it is a well known fact that Mr. Reed
has had to take back more than one of the aforesaid
machines, for the simple reason that they would not
work. Another fact, equally important to the public,
is that my machine requires no ahnttle and leather
pads, while my good friend, Reed, contrives to carry
a large pocket full of the latter art elas to State and
County Fairs, whore his machine happens to be on
exhibition. In conclusion, I would say that I am
willing at any time to stand a fair trial with Wheeler
Wilson's, or any other sewing machines. Persons

To Cenaumprives.—One of the most extraordinary
medicines with which we are acquainted and one
whioh is immediate in its effects, in the cure of all
bronchial and lung diseases, is Dr. Schencke Pu(mon
is Syrup, which has cured hundreds of oases of pul -
monary disease. Dr. Schenck was induced to offer
this medicine to the public from the fact that he had
cured himself of a very dangerous pulmonary affoc•
lion many years age. Hia remarhablo remedy is
compounded wholly: of roots and !linty . , :and has
eared more cases of lung disease than any other
remedy now in use. It is remarkable for its sudden
ness in giving relief. and is as sweet and palatable
as honey. Any person with diseased lungs will find
this medicine an immediate remedy, as a great many
persons in this immediate neighborhood can tesiify.
To persons who are afflicted with any long standing
pulmonary disease we would advise a trial of
Schnee/ea Pulmonic Syrup, whieh in incipient eases
is almost a specific. Dr. Keyser, of No 140 Wood
street, is the agent for Pittsburgh.
Dr. Schenck also manufacturers from several ex
cellent sea woods, grow along the sea shore, an in;
valuable medicine for dyspepsia, called " Sus WEED
Tome," which, in connection with his Mandrake
Pills, has cured numberless cases of general debility

The AtNefae.--Tho Hutchinson Brothers, now
performing at Portal's Pittsburgh Theatre, are car
taininly far beyond all competition in their peculiar
Bee. The feat rf keeping four Biker globes dancing
in the air so swiftly that it, is impossible to distin
guish one from another, though of different colors,
is an astonishing act, which wa venture to say has
never boon equalled in this city. The trtok dogs also
do some wonderful feats. Such an attraction deserves
the patronage of the public, and should attract full
tic uses. For the ladies and children, who would be

PIIESE PILLS HAVE NOW, TO A
limited extent, been before the public in this section
of the country for a period of over twenty years, and Iron
the fact of their not being mo- e generally Suomi through-
out the length and breadto of the land, it might, perhaps,
be inferred that they are lacking in some of the great essen
tilde of a family medicine, or that there are other Pills their
superior, etc.; but each, however, is not the case, their sup
ply from a want of disposition or ability, on the part of the
original proprietor, (Dr. Wilson,) was always limited to such
an extent as at times to render it difficult to fill home orders,
but with even this disadvantage wherever teed they have
never failed to call forth the strongest testimony in their
favor—testimony in many instances unsolicited—not gotten
up expressly for publicity—but freely proffered to the in-
ventor as expressions of gratitude for the great benefits de
rived from the use of these truly wonderful Pith', in proof of
which we subjoin the followings—
We, the subscribers, Ministers of the Gospel, and members
of the Pittsburgh Annual Conference of the Methodist Spiv.
copal Church, having each and all of us, during the past
few years, had frequent opportunities of learning and trying
the character of Dr. B. A. Wilson's Tonic, Cathartic, and
Anti-Dyspeptic Pills, are prepared to, and now state with
pkasure, in this communication. that we know them to be
atfaxoellent medicine, and, as such, recommend their use
to our friends and acquaintances, not only as a specific for
Sick-Headache and Dyspepsia for which they are recom
mended, but as a safe family remedy among children, and
for the prevention and removal of Bilious attacks, eta.

endorse the sentiment of their superior value.

From the Bev. I. S. Hubbard, Ohio, Oct 27,1839.
Dn. WllBOll feel myself a thousand times obliged to
you. I have for some years been afflicted with the dyspep
sia and, from the good effects already produced by your
pills in my case, I am persuaded that the continued use of
them will finally effect a thorough cure; I therefore, wish
you to send me four baxea by the bearer of this, and oblige
yours, etc. ISRAEL SHARP.
Extract of a letter from 001. Camp, an elderly gentlemanof
Virginia, who has raised a numerous family, of some
medical reading, ani much experience in the use of
medicine.
I do most earnestly hope that you will adopt some plan
to supply us with your moat excellent Anti-Dyspeptic Pill.
I have been in the ambit of wing it myself, and in my fami
ly, from the time yon first, brought them into use in our
neighborhood, and upon all occasions have found them to
answer the purpose for which they were administered. My
wife has been very much afflicted with sick-headache, and,
by using one-half of on 4 of the pills, has uniformly found
relleL I think It superfluous to enumerate the different
complaints for which I have administered these pills. Suf
fice it to say that, is ) far as the numerous complainte set out
in the wrsppsr have fallen under my notice, the Tall has had
the desired effect in removing the same; and so far as my
self have been concerned, .4 -cluc k say that they leave the
