INSERTINGS, ETC It will be remembered by our readers test some weeks since we published an acecunt of the robbery of the United States Mint, at Philadelphia, by three men, two of whom were arrested, while the third es caped. The name of the third party wan supposed to be James Moore, alias Henry Thur, upson. A des• cription of his parson was sent all over the country, and for some time after the robbery our pollee kept a close watch over every train which came into the city from tha East ? but without success. They had long since given up the phase, when information was received that the object of tlaer aeareh was in the city. After renewing the search, he was found, on Thursday night, at Bon Trumble's hotel, Penn street, where he was arrested by officer Patterson, of the Mayor's pane°. Ile was taken to the Mayor's office, where he remained until this evening, when he was sent to Philadelphia with a guard of honor. The artieles stolen from the Mint were slugs, coins and medals, only a part of which were recovered from the captured thieves. It was thought the ro• mainer would be found in Moore's possession, but they were not found on his person. William Montgomery.—We learn from the Washington Reporter that Mr. Montgomery has nearly roc:levered from the injury moonily received by falling in his barn. Thu fall was Bo severe that the pectoral muscle, (the muscle which lifts the arm) was torn partially loose from its attachment with the ribs, on tho right side. This still gives him consid. arable pain and precludes any active el-miss. There is no doubt, however, but that in a few woeke he will be entirely recovered. LOCAL AFFAIRS. Vatted States Circuit Vourt. Judge Irwin, of tho United States Circuit Court for the Western District of Pennsylvania, held court on Friday morning for the purpose of giving a decision on the motion for snow trial in the case of H e nry Mcore, convicted of counterfeiting. After the prisoner had been brought into court, the learned Judge made a few remarks, touching on the points made and argued by counsel. Ho remarked that it was not essential to show that there was an intent to defraud. Tho indictment does not show it to ho necessary, as it id not set forth. In cases of uttering and and publishing counterfeit money it would be necessary to prove such intent, but in an indictment for forgery it is suf.. fictent to establish the crime by such evidence as can be adduced. Where a person is found in possession of all the implements for the manufacture of forged coin, as the person here charged has been, it is a presumption or inference that he has them with the intention of using. lie is in precisely the same sit uation as a party found in possession of stolen goods, who is presumed to be a thief, unless he can account for having the goods in his possession. In this case it was necessary fur the prisoner to prove how he be came the possessor of those implements, or the pre • sumption was that ho did not hold them innocently. Neither was it necessary to find him in possession of the counterfeit coin—the possession of the imple• meats was sufficient—provided it was shown he had given forged coin to another. As to the testimony of Arnold, the Court remark • ed that on the trial it had toad the jury that he was a particepa criminia, and in charging them he had not commented on his testimony, as this would be interfering with the province of the jury. When such a person was used es a witness, the .eight his testimony is entitled to is left entirely to the judgment of the jury. Such a witness may toll the truth or he may not. With crimes of this character it was more frequently necessary to rely on the evi dence of an accomplice than in any other kind of prosecution, owing to the seeresy with which their operations are conducted. The jury had found this witness, Arnold, to bo worthy of belief on oath, and, therefore, the Court had nothing further to do with it, and did not think proper to interfere. As to new witnesses and evidence to be introduced, the Court had the affidavit of the convicted person, and that alone, to rely upon for the truth of these statements, which, he was sorry to say, could not be believed. The Court could give no attention to such en affidavit, coming from an accused and convicted prisoner. On these grounds, therefore, tho motion for a now trial was overruled. R. P. Flenniken, Esq., one of the counsel fur Moore, requested the Court to delay sentence for a few days, in order to give the prisoner an opportu nity of seeing his daughter, who is living in the country. The Judge said he could not grant the request, as he must leave the city to-morrow, and wished to ad. jouru the Court. The time of taking the prisoner to the Penitentiary would, however, be diszretionary with the Marshal, and in the interim the desired in tersiaw might be had. Moore was thou asked to stand up, when the Court sentenced him to pay 4 flue of too dollars and costs, and undergo an imprisonment in the Western Peni tentiary for the term of fi ,-‘3 years. Arrest of a 6Uppo.:ird Plitt( Tt. oe fend of witii, , ming aquatic A i val.,- Karl Formes' Concert. On Thursday next, our citizens are to have a musi cal treat, for which they have long waited with anx iety, and which, when it shall take place, we are well assured, will not only equal, but far surpass, the high expectations which have been raised. The reputation of such an artist as Formes is world. wide, and the furors of popularity with which his performances have everywhere been received by the best musical audiences in both hemispheres, is a guarantee of the genuineness of his talent and the greatness of his power. He is, beyond a doubt, the greatest living bass) and oratorio singer. Bie voice is most extraordinary, and ho excels alike in eocular and sacred music. In his present series of musical festivals, which will be conducted by Mr. thlman, Director and Manager of the New York Academy of Music, Formes will be aided by Mrs. Hattie Andem, the great American soprano, Madame &lumen, from the Imperial Opera, Vienna, Mr. Ernest Porring, the celebrated English tenor, and tho Grand Orchestra of the New York Academy, composed of twenty-five of the leading artists of the country, under the di roctiod of /Carl Ansehuts. The programme, which will consist of oratorlos,English, German and Italian songs and airs, with full orchestra accompaniments, will be announced in a day or two. The concert will take place in City Hall. Tho sale of reserved Beats for the first concert will commence on Tuesday morn ing at Mellor's music store, Wood street. Reid to Bail.—Robert J. Carson, whose discharge by the District Court, on a bench warrant, we notice elsewhofe, was hot I to bail yesterday by Alderman Lewis on a charge of false pretences. The prose. cutor is William H. Sutton, who alleges that Carson, by representing to him that ho would obtain the on. doreement of Atwell, Lee & Co., obtained from him one hundred and eleven dollars. Carson was arrested OD the charge on Thursday, but entered bail fur fur, ther hearing to day. The bail being considered in competent, he was re arrested yesterday, and wale ing an examination, entered bail for his appearance at the next term of Court to answer the charge. Theatrical.—A good bill is presented at Porter's Pittsburgh Theatre this evening, when Mr. Taylor concludes his engagement, appearing as Charles do Moor, in the groat play of " The Robbers," a char acter in wiCela he is said to excel. A grand trial dance between Miss Jennie Hight and Miss Julia Turnbull will also take place; to conclude with the farce of " The Two Grogories." This ie decidedly a great bill, and those who wish to enjoy really good acting should make it a point to go. The Body of an Unk•nowcn Alan, with a piece of stone Led about his neck, weighing from ton to fit teen pounds, was found on Wednesday in the Mo nongahela river, near the mouth of Big Whitely creek. It had been in the water some time and could not be recognized. A Coroner's jury returned a verdict of " found drowned." The oircumetancea would indicate that the man had either beau foully murdered or that ho had oommitted suicide, but nothing positive is as yet known. The Remnios of Mrs. Wog:sr.—The Coroner'.4 iu• vostigatlou into tho raue of the death of Mr-. Walker, with whose murder Robert Arnold stands acAußed, will roost probably be concluded next week.
