Pleld and nig wanitly Cyrus W. Field having achieved greatnes , and renown throu-li the success that lot, crowned his energy and perseverance in the laying of the Atlantic telegraph c;ible, the public is interested to know what mariner of man he is, and to learn the chief incidents of his history. His family is one of th e most honorable in western Massachus , tts, with members distinguished in nearly cver , , , department of native life. Rev. D. D. Field a native of East Guth - ford, Conn., a gradute of Yale College iu 18.02, first settled in Had dam, Conn. There, probably, were all —seven sons and two danglitus. Of the former are David Dudley Field, one of the first lawyers of New York city ; Jonathan E. Field a member of the Berkshire bar, and resident of Stockbridge ; Cyrus W. Field, whose name is now a household word : thew D. Field, of Southwick, in this c un v, a civil engineer, and one of the Repo Senators from Hampden coun;:c . in I‘, - ,7 ; phen I. Field, a Judge of the Supreme C of California : and Rev. 11. M. Field, 1 , /rlll'rly pastor of the Congregational Church in Springfield, and now one of the conductor, of the New York Evangeli.s.t. The seventh and oldest son, Timothy, went to sea thirty or more years ago, and has never been heard from since. One of the daughters married the brother of Mr Cyrus Field's wife, arid died at Paris within a few years. The other daughter married Rev. Josiah Brewer, J,lnd 'became with him a missionary in Greece, whence they have returned, and now reside at the family home in Stockbridge in this State. In MO Rev. Dr. Field removed from Had darn to Stockbridge, where his children were all young, and became pastor of the village church there, a relation which he continued till 1837, when it was dissevered, and ho re turned to his old charge at Haddam for a few years; but he retired from the ministry s., iae ten years since, an came to Stook.load e' again, where among his old friends, and a portion of his children, he is living out in peace and honor the few remaining days ef d long and useful life. Thus Stockbridge may fairly claim to be the family home ; here the father passed his most active and important years ;. and here his sons were reared, and prepared for the important lines ef action, into which flier - have nearly all since fallen. David-Dudley Field and Rev. Henry M. are graduates of Williams College in the same Mr. Cyrus Field engaged as clerk for hi- , older brother, Matthew, who was paper manu facturer at Lee. Abuot the period of his ma jority, - . perhaps before, he engaged in th same business on his own account in AV e , t field, in this county, but failed about 1837. II subsequently went to New York and establish ed a paper commission house, one ef fhe tic-r, of, the largest modern establishments of tielt description. 11l success overtook him 11, , r , . again ; but it did not conquer its Nerved to new labor, he continued the some business, commanded fortune, paid 11ff . ttli 01 his old debts, and became a rich man. Liberal in dispensing the blessings of his wealth, Lc was the patron of art, and surrounded his father at Stockbridge, with all the comforts and luxuries that old age covets. Some five or six - years ago he seemed to have conceived the purpose of constructing the ocean tele graph, and at once threw into ifs consuinma tion all his native enthusiaism, all his ac acquired knowledge of men and things, all his energy and perseverance, and all his pecunia ry means. There seems to be no divided honor in this enterprise—no possibility of question as to the author of the great achievment of modern civilization. Hundreds may have dreamed and suggested the idea; but lir. Field vies the first to set seriously at work for its re_ali _zatien and the first to accomplish it. Fortunate is he in having completed his own work. No Fulton can come in and rob him of hi, honor. Mr. Field is about forty-three se.;:r:, 011, and looks gouger if possible. He has a light lithe body, all muscles and nerves, and no flesh, five feet eight inches high, and weighs perhaps 140 pounds. His features are sharp and prominent: a nose that almost exhausts his face; eyes small, sunken, gray or blue, and apparently half closed ; a large forehead, and a full head of auburn hair. There is a youthful, almost boyish appearance fib ,ut him, that makes him seem younger than he really is. There is little of the impressive ness of figure and manner about him that distinguish his brother Dudley of the New York bar. We do not know that these fact. in the his tory of the New Moral Hero of Ow Christian Civilization are exact to date and let u'r, hot they trace the outline of his life aria charao. ter with correctness.
