The Weather.—The following is the range of the
thermometer and barometer, as kept by George E.
Shaw, optician, Fifth, street, on Saturday

Another Attempt.—We noticed. on Saturday that a
man named Cassiday, at the St. Nicholas Hotel had
attempted to take his life by hanging. Mr. Fehl,
the proprietor. of tho house, was feafed that 4 0
might make another attempt, placed him in n roc❑:
with another person who kept a watch over ❑im.
About one o'clock on Saturday. morning he saw
Casiiday leave his
_bed and walk towards the win
dow. He remained looking out for a few moments,
then attempted to throw himself out to the pave•
ment below. Ho was, - however, , prevented by his
companion, who immediately called in the night
watch and had him convoyed to the tombs. There
Le was kept until morning, when the Mayor, satis
fied that the man was demented, wrote out a com
mitment and sent him te jail. The Mayor has com
municated with the relatives of the unfortunate man,
who reside in Ceatro county, requesting them to
au a ar.d take charge of him. Ho will be kept until
..hey arrive under a strict surveillance, as he cannot
be safely trusted alone.
lThe Grasshopper Nuisatice.—Our exchanges from
ectern Pennsylvania and Southern New York are
filled with dolerous accounts of the ravages of there
troublesome little visitors, which make their ap
pearance, at intervals, in immense numbers. In our
part of the State, the farmers have not been seri
ously annoyed by these Egyptian plagues. The
Fredonia (Chatauque Co., N. Y.,) Censor says :
" These long-legged interlopers bid fair, unlefe
their career is suddenly cut short by a heavy rain, to
prove as scrious a plague as the locusts of Egypt.
They are now swarming in this county in such num
Lore as the farmers have never before witnessed, and
acccuets of their ravages roach nq from every direc
tien. A friend, living about a miie from our village,
tifnrms :Is that of seven acres of finely growipg corn
ra-_his farm, there will scarcely be a half-dozen well
:a:led ears. The grasshoppers devour the silk, which
at cure the davo:cprecat of the ear. Another
gentleman's currant bashes have been girdled and
killed by the same insect. One farmer en the out
skirts of our village has had his onions destroyed,
and of two thou...and cabbages will not get one. On

south, we found them swarming in myriads, filling
the air, and the grass in the pastures was eaten eo

Dianzießed. Mayor Weaver dismissed a suit
ngalnst E. W. Lynd and I. B. Stryker on Saturday,
preferred by W. H. Sutton, who purchased a 7iot

it, wanted the purchase money tefandol. The our.

but would act pay back the money. Several sad
dlers testiftzd that the harness was of the medi

the prosecutor.
Deatt..—Mr. Samuel Steinmetz, well
known us the proprietor of the popular reataraunt
near the corner of Fifth and Wood streets, died sad..
donly on Friday night. Ho was subject to dropsy
and disease of the heart, aid while attending to his
business on th,acvs - :ing, he Was suddenly stricken
down by an attack' of the tatter, and although medi
cal attendance t=ss promptly rrooured, he died el
most instantly. Mr. S. had many friends who will
regret his sadden demise
Alleged Mail Robber Arreatei.—Wo noticed EOMO
time Since that a young man named Milton lender
eon, a mail carrier between Saltsburg, and Indians,
bad been arrested and confined in jail for robbing
the mail and abstracting, money and other valuables
from letter:, which were found in his possession.
On Saturday the Dzpuly , Marshal of the United
State= Conrt, Bernard Dougherty, arrived in the
city, having young llendorson. in custody. lie was
confined in jail, and will be tried at the next term of
the U. S. Circuit Court in September.
M,a Alfred Wilson, of Meadville, Pa., was robbed
one night last week on board the steamer Sky Lark,
while on her passage from L.3avenviortn to St. Louis,
of a gold watch worth $lOO, r,nd $260 in gold. He
was returning from Leavenworth, cod had lain down
to sleep, when the robber stripped him of all his
money, amonc, which wore seven twenty dok!ar gold
pieces : coined at the assay office in San .fi ran .. 73 1

nrd week, a eon of Mr. Jimes A. Barnes, of Corn
- pie . r township, Vouangu county, had ono of his
f rn off by a threshing machine with which be
a a number of boys were amusing themselves
by volving the cylinder. Ho died in great
agony on Sunday morning. Ho was about 14 year,
old.
Anoni.er Boat Race.—Thoro is now another fair
prospect for a race between two of our fast four.oared
row-heats. The owners of the Isaac Gullet have ac
cepted a challenge given by the M. F. Cassdiay. The
race will come off in two or three weeks. The crews
are to be selected from among the hands of the Clin
ton and Eagle Iron Works, and the purse is $lOO,
with the understanding of " play or pay."
Patents.—A number of PittAurgb.ers have taken
out patents recently, among whom are the following :
CaPrin Adams, for improvement in corn shelters;
-James 11. Sweet, for improvement in nail-plate feed
era, and W. S. M'lntosh ond. Samuel Wadsworth, for
on improvement in steam valves; William Slack, of
Manchester, had also a patent granted him for
im
provement in plows.

vention of a novel character is to meet at Mansfield
t, :morrow, consisting of all the glee clubs in this
vicinity, numbering some twenty or thirty, which
have been receiving inrtimet'--. from Professor Bur
gess of Allegheny City. The programme con6Lits of
a grand concert in the afternoon, with a ball and a
display of _fireworks in the evening.
Foreign Papers.—Messrs. Hunt Miner, Ma,
scnic Hall, have received the London Illustrated
Illustrated Times, Weekly Times, and Punch.
The former contains a finely colored supplemental
eahhiting the arms and flags of all nations,
wl:ioh is alone worth double tha price of the paper.
Blown 14.—0 n Monday night, a safe kept in the
ERNI mill belonging to Coe 1.; Co., at Crestline, was
blown open by burglars, no doubt with the hope of
getting money. In this they were disappointed—it
contained nothing but books and raper-, and these
were left undisturbed.
Struck by Lightning.—During the progress of the
storm on last Wednesday evening, the horse of Mr.
Joseph Gillen, in New Brighton %yes struck by light ,
nintr, and partially consumed.

CLNCINNATI, August 2L—Nlour opened dull and prices are
little better than nominal, but under the news from Now
York the demand is active, and buyers paid 250 Dbl. higher
than this morning, and the market closed buoyant at s4,Bf
a:5 for supertioe. Wheat is active; 1600 bush sold at $1
for prime red, and $1,12 for prime white, closing buoyant.
There ie no change in other grain. Whisky has d, alined to
22%c, with sales of 950 bbls., but closed firm at the decline.
Lir seed Oil is held at 80c, and Is very scarce. Money is easy,
and eastern exchange is 34 per cent. premium and dell.
