ALL Desideratum Supplied-.. The Quaker
City Sewing Nachlite.
We obeerved'at our friend Daly's, on Fifth street,
corner_of Market alley, a new Sowing Machine—the
Quaker City." The characte.riatics which commend
it are important to the publfewhen business is buoy
ant and times are good, but doubly so during this
season of mercantile prostration. Why should a man
invest $lOO to $l5O in a sewing machine for his
wife or daughter when ono can be had for $2O or
$4O, complete, which "works equally well and is
eu
perior in point of simplicity ?"
We have closely examined the "Quaker City,"
and find it a model of simacity ; so much so, indeed,
that it is a wonder in itself—performing its work in
the most pet-feet manner withadt the complicated ma
chinery and liability to get out of order which all
other machines are liable to. Eat the great desider
atum heretofore has bean a good cheap machine.
We are happy to announce that this important want Is
more than supplied in the " Qaakor *City." It is
with regret, mingled with pleasure, we learn that the
manufe.cturera cannot supply machines, so great is
the demand. Mr. Daly being overrun with orders
started East to make arrangements for a constant
supply. He found the manufacturers busy erecting
additional building?, and introducing ia.proved ma
chinery, expressly for their production—a portion of
which they were daily bringing into play, and every
thing looked fair to enable them in a short time to
gow the " Quaker City " " broadcast over the land."
Our lady readers will of course call at Mr. Daly's.
tie invites an examination, as the machine itself
will satiefy the most skeptical.
Child Beating.
A woman named Mrs. Milligan, residing on the
corner of Pennsylvania Avenue and Vine street, was
arrested by the Mayor's Police at a late hour on
Friday evening. An information had been made
against her by ono of her neighbors in the morning
for cruelly beating her stop-son, a little fellow only
seven or eight years of age. Those woo reside near
her say she is in the habit, when intoxicated; which
is frequently the cane, of abusing the boy most shame
fully.. On Friday morning, not content with boating
him, sh.e seized him by the urns with her teeth, and
the poorboy's flesh showed the deep imprint of the
%cm:bares teeth. Sho' was examined on Saturday
morning }d theboy was much terrified at her ap
peaser,/ an t z ,zl said he did not wish to go near her.

Hole/ Bobbery.—A mon named William M'Auley
wfio - stopped at the Washington Hotel on last Thurs
day night, alleged before Aldorman Wilson on Fri-
day that fifty dollars in gold and bank notes had
been abstracted from his pocket-book during the
night.'. no suspected Edward Brown, a colored por
ter, who had shown him up to lozd, of taking it, and
made the information accordingly. On the exami
nation the proprietor of the houso testified that he
was in the bar-room all night, and that Brown was
not out of the room except lahen, -I:lTtley to
his room. Brown was accor ingly discharged from
custody. It is a singular case, as M'Auley alleges
that his wallet contained one hundred and sixty dol
lars in gold and some paper, while only forty dollars
of the former and ten dollars of the latter was taken
out.
Fatal Accident at Cadiz.—Mr. Joseph Robb, resi
ding near Cadiz, 0., in Greene township, an old and
highly respected citizen, came to his death suddenly
on last Saturday evening week. He had been over
to borrow a sled from ono of his neighbors, and was
taking it home. Just after he had left, and was
within a short distance of the house, one of the colts
that he had hitched to the sled became entangled in
the gears, and while he was trying to extricate the
animal, Mr. Robb fell down, and the horses fell upon
him with his knees open his breast. Two of the
boys, who were along with him, got the horse off of
him as soon as possible, when he raised op, and im
mediately fell back dead.
A rather Serious Joke.-9 man who resides in
Allegheny, named Christian Hinkle, jumped into the
Allegheny near the Aqueduct on Friday evening,
while a number of persons were standing near him,
having first torn off his clothing. He had been
drinking to excess. With considerable difficalty he
was rescued by those wIo saw him go into the
water. He was arrested, and while on the way to
the watch-house, adid he was -ray in fun, and that
he had no idea of destroying himself,—evidently re.
garding it as a good joke. It was almost a sad reality
for him, and an experiment which would scarcely
bear repetition.
A Green Corn Luxury.—As green corn is abut..
dant at present, the following novel recipe for cook
ing it may be interesting to our lady readers : Take
a dozen or two ears of corn, the sweet varieties pre
ferred, husk, and, without boiling, grate off the
grains. Stir into this two tablospoonsful of flour for
every dozen ears, and also an egg, previously well
beaten, and a little salt, and a very little sugar. If
the corn be sweet, about two tablespoonsfal to every
dozen ears. Let the whole be well stirred, and baked
in a greased tin pan for an hour in a hot oven. Then
eat with fresh butter or cream.
The Pittsburgh Post Office:—The Bellaire Ere,
in announcing the appointment of John C. Dunn to
the Post Office, says : "James P. Barr, the able and
efficient editor of the Morning Poet, was a candidate
for the office, and it will puzzle wiser heads than ours
to know why he did not get it. The Post is one of
the ablest Democratic dailies west of the mountains,
and the only one west of them in Pennsylvania. It
would be natural to Enppsse that the conductor of
FICh a Sheet would not be overlooked for tho benefit
of some man without position and without int:lnduce.
We are glad to announce in our columns the open=
lug of a new school, which, from our knowledge of
the ability and accomplishments of Mr. and Mrs. Fe
tedoux, will be a great acquisition to our city. Their
school rooms are in the eecond story of their private
residence, and the situation of their house is central
and retired - . Each pupil will receive, in addition to
the English branches, a French lesson daily, and her
further 'progress be insured by evening conversations
once a week.
Stolen Property.—On Friday a skiff was found in a
stable on the bank of the Allegheny river, which had
been brought down from Logan's Ferry and secreted.
The Garner suspects the this!, and bad a' warrant
issued for his arrest.
Bowman & Co :—My wife was troubled with cough
and pain in the breast for five years—the last two of
which she was very low indeed. I procured some

work, which she had not previously done for four

Attempted Sutold•.
A young wt man named Ann Richards, attempted
to commit suit, de, on Saturday afternoon, by drown
ing. About four o'clock, Judge Parke, of Manches
ter, and another parson, who was acquainted with
the girl, were passing over the St. Clair street bridge,
when they observed her about the second pier from
the Pittsburgh side of the bridge. She had tied her
bonnet to the railing, and was about to jump over
when she was seen. She was taken to Alderman
Donaldson's cffice, who committed her to jail until
some provision can be made for her.
Her friends reside in Allegheny, but she has been
residing with a woman in Diamond alley. The
cage of this rash attempt is aleged to be a decep
tion practiced upon her by a young man, who en.
deavored to induce her to go to a house of bad re
pute.
Diarrhea Mixture.—One of the most important
medicines for the cure of Diarrhms, Dysentery,
Cholera Mcrbus, and all affections of the bowels, so
prevalent at this season of the year, is Da. SwerwE's
BowEL CORDIAL, which cures that disease without
doubt. It has a wonderful effect in caring all these
diseases. No man who overloads his stomach with
crude and unzipo vegetables should be-without It.
Dr. Swayne is a respectable physician In Philadel

He then wanted to be measured for another, after

a warrant issued for his arrest. Mayor Weaver was

township, was seriously injured on Friday evening,
while returning from this city to his residence, by a
blow inflicted with an axe, by some unknown person,
when within a short distance of his house. His skull
was fractured, and for a time it was thought his
wound was dangerous, bat after proper medical at.
tontion, it was not thought it could result fatally.
Horne Stolen.—According to information received
at the Mayor's office, on the 12th of August a brown
mare was stolen from Jacob Grove, of Elizabethtown,
by a German Jew named Phillip Eahn, who travels
about, selling rouge to jewelers. Ho was last seen

Arm Anson, November 6, 1856.
PROF. 0. J. Wood—Deer Sir :—I have heard much said-of
the wonderful effects of your Hair Restorative, but having
been so often cheated by quackery and quack nostrums,
hair dyes, Cm, I was disposed to place your Restorative in
the same category with the thousand and ono loudly trum
peted quack remedies, until I met yoli in Lawrence county
some months since, when you gave me such assurance as
induced the trial of your Restorative in my family—first by
my good wife, whose hair had become very thin and en.
tirely, white, and before exhausting one of your large bot
tles, her hair was restored nearly to its original beautiful
brown color, and had thickened and becOme beautiful and
glossy upon, and entirely over the head; she continues to
usenot simply because of its beaut ifying effects upon
the hair, but because of its healthful influence upon the
head and mind. Others or my family and friends arousing
your Restorative, with the. happiest effects herefore, my
skepticism and doubts in reference to its character and
value, are entirely removed; I can and do and most car
dially and confidentially recommend its use by all who
would have their hair restored from white car gray (by tea
son of sickness or age,) to original color and beauty, end by
all prang persona woo would have their hair beautiful and
glossy. Very truly and gratefully yours,
SOLOMON MANN.
PRIZAD Woon: It was a long time after I !raw you at
Blissfield before I got the bottle of Restorative for which
you gave me an order upon your agent in Detroit, • nd when
I got it we concluded to try it on Mrs. Mann's hair, aa, the
surest teat of its power. It has done all that you Revved
me It would do; and others of my family and friends,
having witnessed its effects, are now using and recommend.
ing ike use to others as entitled to tholiighest consideration
