.Aquaticf.—The excitement among the amateurs in
the rater line about the race between the " Putman "
and the " Darling," to come cff next weak, is on the
increase. Bets of two to ono on the " Darling " are
freely offered and quickly taken. The friends of
both boats are sanguine of the success of their fa
vorite: The boats are a - 01l matched, the oarsmen
well selected, and the race promises to be closely
contested.
On Saturday last, a new raw-boat, just completed
by Ina° Gullet, and bearing his name, was launehed.
She is &neat craft, with a fine model, and forty-three
feet long.
On nest Saturday, a new barge, now being eon.
strutted by R. Roger 3, for the Allegheny Boat
Club, will be ready for the water. She is named
after Gan. Robinson.
Crops in Columbia County.—The Bloomsburg (Co.
lumbia connty)-lienwerta says of the crops inthat
vicinity: " The yield of whoat may be considered
more than an average crop, in this section of coun
try, and the farmers never had a more favorable time
for gathering it. The pats aro ripening fast, and
will be fit to cut in a fotr days. Corn is coming on
finely, and the warm weather and occasional, rains
we have bad the past month have pushed it ahead
rapidly. * If the balance of the season should prove
as favorable, and frost should sot set in carly, we
may look for an average crop, and probably a little
more. Tho potatoes are doing well."
Collino Park—On Saturday afternoon Collins
Park will be again ttirsrri ollon to the public, when
a pacing match will take place), open to all horses
that have never paced their mile in public in 2:50 or
less—for a puree of forty dollars—entrance ten per
eent.—to close on Thursday. The race will be mile
heat', best three in five, bursas to go as they please,
and drivers or riders to weigh 145 lbs. It is expected
that a match will take place on the same day be.
tween "Big dim" and "Fanny Robinson,' , ' two
mile heats in harness, for six hundred dollars.
Should this latter match be made, the contest would
doubtless excite much interest.
Altered Notc.—A young German, named Woelthen,
WIIS before Maycr Weaver yesterday, charged with
passing a note altered from a two to a ten on the bar
keeper of a beer Faller named Heftier. He was held
to bail for his appearance this afternoon, when he
will have a hearing.
Ifangficld Property.—We call the attention Qf our
readers to the advertisement of beautiful sites for
t,auding purposes, in Mansfield.
Glad News ! Full of Hope to the Afflicted and
Suffering.--Diany of the thousand portals of Death
may be dosed, and life made happier and more com
fortable to thousands-who aro now in danger. Doubt
less this world contains many .a balm to soothe its
physical woes and cure its diseases. Among those,
in prominent rank, stands Bowman's Vegetable
pond, a zate and speedy pare for Consumption. s-
The railroad editor of the True Frees think. J.
Edgar Thomson is a very wise and proper man, and
in the issue of Monday speaks patronisingly of the
Pittsburgh and Ft. 'Wayne _Railroad. A few days
ago, these several Railroad' Presidents who held or
represented Allegheny County bonds, or who bad as
sisted in securing suNeriptions from the county or
city were denounced as swindlers, who should never
be paid a dollar of principal or interest, oven if the
Supreme Court decided in . their favor. Perhaps tho
bottleholder editor wants 'his pass renewed or rail
road advertising. If he don't get them it won't be
for want of, whining and toadying.
Public Drinking Fountains.—ln the ancient city
of Chester, in England, Peter Eaton, Esq., the, late
Mayor, has presentetito the public a beautiful granite
fountain. If the chief magistrates of our own city
would leave behind them such valuable and enduring
mayoraltyship memorials, the heartfelt thanks of
thousands of the working classes would be secured
by them. In Pittsburgh, there is not a solitary water
fountain for the people. Is there no liberal Mayor,
no wealthy Alderman; no merchant prince, no suc
cessful manufacturer, who will immortalise his name
by erecting the :fast public fountain in the Iron
City ?
Finally Comntitted.—John Miller, whom wo no
ticed as having taken a watch to Mr. Dunseith, in
Diamond alley, for the purpose of Balling it, and who
was arrested on suspicion of having stolen it, had an
examination before Mayor Weaver yesterday morn.
ing. The watch was identified as the property of
Mr. Richard Weiland, of Greensburg. Miller was
accordingly committed to jail to answer the charge
at the next term of Court.
Springfield Ordinaneee.—The Select and Common
Councils r ere presented last evening with a copy of
tho laws and ordinances of Springfield, Illinois,
through Mr. Barnhill, of the Sixth Ward. Tho
usual resolution of thanks to the Mayor of that city
was passed.
The Aqueduct.—ln a report to the City Councils,
last evening, the Controller stated that the receipts
from the Aqueduct, the present year, amount to
$760,60, while the expenses were $870,60—a differ.
once of $llO, which is to be made up by the city.
Isaac J. Woods.—This individual, charged with
dealing in bogus lottery tickets, who was to have an
examination before Mayor Weaver yesterday morn%
ing, waived an examination, and was ,u9mmitted to
jail for trial.
Doge.—Two-dogs, supposed to be suffering from
hydrophobia, were shot yesterday at the Point. The
dog law should be enforced while the - thermometer
ranges as high as at preslnt.
The attention of cash inyers is directed to the fact
that Carnaghan, Allegheny City, is now Waring un•
usual inducements in his stock of well made clothing,
furnishing goods, &0., for men and boys Examine
his stock and prices.
The Wire for the new Allegheny bridge is being
manufactured at the factory of Messrs. Townsend
th Co., Falleton.
Valuable Real Estate and Stocks.—This evening,
at Hr. Davis will sell in his second floor Sales
Room, Fifth street, by order of the Orphans' Court,
a list of valuable property in South Pittsburgh and
Birmingham. At the same time, building lots on

OD DR. HOSTETTER'S BITTERS—These Bitters ere
universally acknowledged to be alsure preventative
and cure for Fever and Ague, Flatulence, heaviness of the
stomach, or any other like affection. Their effect upon the
system is most miraculous; they give a healthy tone to the
system, remove all morbid matter, and in fact, thoroughly
cleanse the system of all impurities. The proprietors, in
presenting this preparation to the public, assure them that
in no single case, when it has been used according to their
dictation's, has it been known to fail, but on the contrary
new virtues have been discovered {nits nee. To those affiict•
ed with any of the above ills of the body, the "Bitters " are
offered as a speedy and certsin cure. Try them, and form
your own opinion.

far superior to any preparation of the kind now in use.
They are a sure cure for Dyspepsia, Costiveness, General De.

most of the prevailing diseases of the day. They should bo
kept and used by every family, especially at this season of
the year, when loss of appetite is so prevalent. No family

ANN 4emoit, November 6, 1856.
Pit 0. J. ii ocd—Dear Sir have heard much said of
the wonderful effects of your Hair Restorative, but having
been en often cheated by quackery and quack nostrums,
hair dyes, Sic., I was disposed to place your Restorative in
the same category with the thousand and one loudly trum
peted quack remedies, until I met you in Lawrence county
some months since ' when you gave me each assurance as
induced the trial of your Restorative in my family—first by
my good wife, whose hair had become very thin and en•
tirely white, and before exhausting one of your large bot
tles, her hair was restored nearly to its original beautiful
brown color, and had thickened and become beautiful and
glossy upon ; and entirely over the head; oho continues to
nee it, not simply because of its beautifying effects upon
the hair, but because of its healthful influence upon the
head and mind. Others of my family and friends are using
your Re.toiative, with the happiest effects herefore, my
skepticism and doubts in reference to its character and
valn4 are entirely removed; I can and do and most cor
dially and confidentially recommend its use by all who
would have their hair restored from with() or gray (by rea
gen of eickna or ago,) to original color and beauty end by
all young persons woo would have their hair beautiful and
glossy. • Very truly and gratefully yours.
--- SOLOMON MANN.
VEMID "WOOD: It was a long time after I saw you at
lllissfield before I got the bottle of Restorative for which
you gave mean order upon your agent in Detroit, and when
I got it we concluded to try it on Sirs. Mann's hair, as the
surest test of its power. It has done all that you assured
me it would do; and others of my family and friends,
having witnessed its effects, are now using and recommend
ing lie nee to others as entitled to the highest consideration
you claim for It.
Again, very respectfully and truly, yours,
SOLOMON MANN.
