1. SOAP, mannfactnred by B. 0. J. L. Sawyer, re•
receives the preference over all other Idnde ever offered for
flaity nee.
Its advantages over other Soaps are :—lst. It is cheaper
to use, one pound being equal to three of common rosin
Soap. 2d. Half the time need only be occupied in washing
when this Soap is used in place of other Soap. Bd. Labor
in washing can be nearly dispensed with, as' the clothes
will require little if any rubbing,
this avoiding their wear
un the wash-board, 4th. Coiling the clothes is unnecessary
wh.n this Soap is used, and hard or salt water answers
equally fl 9 wallas soft. 6th. Printers, Ihiehinists ; Painters
and others, find it far superior to other Soaps. 'lt speedily re
m ives grease, tar„paint, printere'dak and dirt from the
bends, leaving the skin soft, and free from chapping.
To avoid the labor of rubbing the clothes; and the use of
the wash-board, the following directions should be followed :
Fzx the washing of eight or ten of a family, take one
pound of Soap, cut it into shavings, and dissolve in one
gallon of hot water; put the clothes into a tub containing
about ten gallons of warm water; roar in the dissolved
Soap, and stir thoroughly. Let them soak twenty to thirty
minutes, wring out, and rinse in warm water once, cold
water twice. A very dirty wrist-band, or seam ' di grease
sp , As, may require a slight rubbing, but othcrwiso the
clothes will come out clean and white, without rubbing or
boiling. Cold water may be used in place of hot, requiring
about double time in soaking.

But at this age a eaei ge,seemed to come over
her existence. lirtl:h appiartitl now to have
visited her She became erect : though lithe and
slender as reed. Her slain changed the pallid
clammy hue for a clear lustrous white; and while
her wrists and ankles and small hands end feet
remained the same, rest of herlimbs expand

still light Bud airy to a degree. Ber waist con

her shoulders became full :ad obtuse, her gentle
bosom tuddeel forth into early womanhood, and
her sunkerrwcheeks plumped OOP lute a perfect

were exactly regular But when her lips, no

a glow settled en each clietik, n,ti firstflitting and

when a small timid dimple ventured upon her
little round chin, then it was she stood confesed
the Beauty of the Mill, the Thorn, the parish,
the district of country.
She was somewhat under the middle height of
women, and pcasss.sed of a delicacy rf feature,
complexion, and Ehape, that 4 - _•zoiteci in all won
der end admiration. • She appeared so slender
and fragile, yet so symetrioal ,- ,nd so graceful in
ever? motion, that trim .sk7:,iry Leah," which
had b-on giver una,c....;eunt of hc.:r deformity, be
came now the scubriquet,—oh, hew much more
appropriate !—of her Elnchlen loveliness.
Atri Iva . you Lacy I am about to treat you
to the o!.I story of gritils - ,, and haply even, noble
Hood, long e mihed and concealed, but at length
bursting Into lie Lt. and rising to its Mill proper
place, liko water t;)ito level. But Leah woo, in
very truin, the daughter of a beggor,—iLl meta
phor, tho child of CirE, and tvil.
How man -' lb s.:, erewhile made the poor little
medicant n subjecc of injury or insult, now -en
vied, hated, er madly loved her! Yes many of
those young men who .ci lai - gl.ed a year or two
before, as they etend_t aor from their father's
door, or sent their dogs barking and tearing af
ter her, would now have been proud to do her
the most menial service, to obtain one kind look,
one gladdeui - ig Emil , . What errands they in
vented merely ; to have the rapture of speaking
to her for a moment, even about ordinary mat.
tern, and hearing the sweet, low tones of.har
dulcet voice in reply! But, still timorous and
baihful, Leah shunned all advances, avoided all
eompanionship, even of her own sex, and might
be seen tripping lightly away to the ruined build
ing, as soon as the bell ;at the mill announced
that work fc r tho wi , s, /Dyer.
Fler labor was of a fight description, and pret
ty well remunerated. l; consisted in inspeoting
the finished writing p - sper, add with an instru
ment of peculiar shf-p- serf! lug away all blem
ishes, specks, forms'. dace., which, floating about
in the solution of size into which the sheets are
dipped, in order to prevent the ink from spread
ing,—in fact, to convevt th - m from blotting-pa -
per,—might have . adhered to them. This re
quired great nicety of touch, and was a clean
and rather superior departmont of the mauufac,
tore ; consequently, both in dress and person,
she required to be of a t , ,:ry different aspect from
the girls who labored in other parts of the work.
The paper made at Whitestream was of the.fin
est quality, and for the Loudon market; and cer
tainly, no band, however highborn, tint wrote
upon, could outvie in shspe, hue, or delicacy ;
that went'e one, which, moving lightly, as over
the Loyo of a musical instrument, put the finish.
it,g touch to its fabric.
About half a mile from the factory lay some
fields which, forming the subject of litigation
between two proprietors, wAre then, and con
tinned to be for some years imager in greet. No
road or lane lay in that quarter-near enough to
' command a view of :Le; on the other band
the prospect from them was very 'extensive,
varied and beautiful. They ran along the south
ern skirts of the narow wood that concealed the
course of the Whiteetream. Ca the balmy sum-/
mer evenings Leah began now to be seen, by'
the few whom chance led in that direction,
about thete fields in company with a yelling
man in dark clothes, who wore his hat elou'ohect
far eve!' his forehead. When looked at, it wet
remarked they used to retire among the trees•
and down into the dell; do,irous apparently not
! so much of eluding ob2ervation as of avoiding
intrusion. Some, too, who had gone up the
copsewood at night to snare the game that
abounded, there, or to set or lift fishing-linei in
the stream, had seen two persons sitting together
on' the bank, beside a wilt rosebush that grows
hard by the old bnilding, and by the summer
moonlight were able to recognize Fairy Leah and
her dusky, epeetral lover.
Two years passed over, the while this strange
dalliance laeted,—danii.nee which was ace Para
dies to poor Leah Meriel, for a yetseirin possess
ed her, fervent, single, unehange.bie :eve the
effect of youth, solitude, and ardent imagina
tion. if ever there wee a perfect, bliss enjoyed
by creature of clay, it w,lB by her hidden inter
course. All the thoughts and feeling in ordinary
people are divided emong relatioes, friends,
wealth. and every other object that excites ono
t.t.tn*,,,,efire—ier—le:yely bosom but in one pas
sion—upon one object, - _;.et returned it with an
equal intensity She had never kJ $ " what it
was to be loved, until by him Kindness unal
loyed with
_contempt she lead received from no
other—her happiness to her wore one idea.
Bred in solitude, squalor, tied affliction, she
sever could have imagined the existence of such
a thing as love She• had seen the word in her
books, it is true, but she passed it as she would
have done in any other syllable to which her
simple mind- could attach no idea : and now, to.
plunge all the deliribus joy of the novel and ex
quisite emotion ? It was even as one Who, born
deaf, by aid of noble surgery has the sense of
bearing awakened in him. With the same rap
tare wherewith such a person would first listen to
a strain of distant music—with the same wild
4eli g iit did she revel in the new discovered feel•
ing the same? nay, greater, intro potent, a
thousand fold ; for the fir et is a matter of 'sense,
the second, of soul! It was in very Booth an
intoxicating cup, but there was deep sin ming
led in the draught, and bitter, bitter, proved to
be dregs.

Bet a new character hero entered upon the
4 6 ,„ e ,—,.George Basil, Esq , the proprietor of the
i'Fitestream factory. This was a men of wealth
possessed of land to the amount a thousand pounds -
annually, and drawing many times that amount
from hiii, busines as a manufacturer. He was an
aged libertine. If there be any circumstances
i n which, vice may be looked upon with leniency,
it is youth, that season of burning thoughts and
gushing pulses. But with what eyes can we
contemplate a hoary sinner, whn lifter spending
a life of vrickedness, ;lice hi lieed runs
eold and sluggish through his publicly and
shamelessly employs the experience of age, and
the temptations of hoarded wealth .for the
aceonaplishments ofnevil ? I may state that he
had been the father 6f a family.
Observing Leah's - extreme delicacy of form
and face, he began towards her course, of offen
sive attention that ultimately drove her from the
factory. She remained away, shut up in the old
dillapidated building. Late one night shortly
after her leaving work, Basil found his way to
this place.
I Leah's mother sat alone in a low brick-paved
apartment, that had formerly been the kitchen
,of the lionse. She was crouching, half-naked
. and horribly filthy, in the corner of tho old
ch'mney, over a fire of sticks, which her daugh
ter had provided and kindled. Beside her lay a
bottle, which contained liquor, but it was now
empty, as was a small tin pannikan she used to
drink from. She was smoking a short pipe,
