SOU° OF THE SDIOKE
II I' 137RANGZ71.
Now all that read
This song of the wood,
This odorous, bachelor ditty,
May haply Bay
Tia a Sting lay
To be Rung in tue Smoky City
The theme I bring
Is old Smo-King---
The king ~1 the burning bowl—
And the Nine invoke
For a song of Smoke
While clouds in the chamber roll
Methinks, RS I Sing,
I hear the ring
Of the words of condemnation,
Each blooming girl
Will fiercely hurl
At my head for the "vile prolation
The apreadlng
By tho Bowing
Is worthy a bard':, laudation
Bat greater mood
19 due to the weed
That blows on the rich plantation
The northern rose,
As its leaves disclose,
Is fair as a lovely fairy:
And fair, I weep,
Is the blushing queen—
The pride of the W,..;Jtru Prairie
To the lover's sight
What game so bright
Bn tho bud , by tIo cot of his Anna?
Yet none compare
With the flowers rare,
On the hanks of the cloar Savannah
In each bachelor's room
Is the rich perfume
Of the otto of lleorgia roses,
Though ladies declare
'Tie shocking to bear,
And turn up their beautiful noses
Slumld of blue"
Dread phantoms pursue,
The fiends you may put to the wing,
And banish the glooms
With the potent fumes
'Neath the banners of old Smo-Eing
Lo! the child of toil
That tine the eon—
True type of contentment and worth—
Le he eita and smokes,
And "crakee him jokes,"
By the blaze of the winter hearth;
Or at day's decline,
In the harvest time,
When the fields aro yellow and ripe,
By the mansion door
He scans them o'er,
Through the wreathe from his ancient pipe
My song is done
With a parting van
At the boisterous canting ration' ;
Behold the free
Brave sons of the sea,
The generous, hardy sallonr.
When storm-birds scream,
And lightnings gleam,
All trouble and fear they wipe
From their hearts of oak
With the clear blue smoke
That curls from the glorious pipe
Now, maidens who read
This rhyme of the weed,
May High and pronounce it a pity
That a man should thews
To weary the maim
By puffing the pipe with a dity
