ble that England will risk a war with our
government just at the present time. It
would he m..st unfortunate for both countries,
if their friendly relations with each other
should be disturbed just at the present time.
If the reports of British aggression upon our
ships have not been exaggerated. and tlti
does not seem t us probable. as the aceounts
all appear to agree, Great Britain will hack
out, apologise, and give indemnity for this an
noying interference with our shipping, on the
part of her cruisers in the Gulf. If no insult
or injury has been intended on the part el
the British Government, our just cause of
complaint will he promptly mt, and pr,onpi
ly these oufrages be atoned for. We believe
that as soon as these outrageous proceedings
of her agents in the Gulf shall base Leon

measures on the part of our i;overnment ne

the cause of - these outrages upon our flag, and
whether the British Ministry own or disown

from Great Britain an acknowledgement of

The Allegheny Cemetery
A beautiful pamphlet of 150 rinzec, printed
in Haven's most artistic style, has been laid
upon our table. It is the " The Second Re
port of the Managers of the Allegheny Cem
etery, together with the charter of the
pOrat 1011 its rules ,tied regulations, list of
cerpdrators, officers and managers, lot holds
ors. Sc., with an appendix embracing a res
print of the first annual report, with the
funeral oration, by Wilson M'Candless, Esq.,
on the occasion of re interring the remai!
of Corn. Joshua liartry and Lieut. •lames
Parker."
At the time that this report was made,
some months ago, we were indebted to Hon.
Thomas M. Howe, the President of the Board
of Managers, for an excellent article upon
the Allegheny Cemetery, in which the ele
gantly written report, now published in so
neat a form, was embodied. Had we space
b to spare in our columns, we are certain that
we should be doing a service to every reader
of education and taste by again reproducing
Mr. Howe's most eloquent essay. We regret
that we cannot do 50. But the pamphlet be
fore us is one which every citizen should (*-
.Win. The amount of information which it
contains is large and of the most interesting
kind,:and Mr. Howe's report and Col. M'ean
dless's eloquent oration will bear reading
again and again.
The Comity of Monona
In the States composing the Federal Union,
where there is no express enactment to the con
trary, the laws of other States and other na
tions are admitted to be of binding force. A
curious instance of the application of this
rule occurred a day or two since in the course
of a trial in the District Court in this County.
The title to a piece of land in litigation de
pended in part upon the legitimacy or illegiti
macy of one of the parties in the suit. It
appeared that the father and the mother were
married in France, by the Mayor of a Com
mune, after the birth of the party in ques
tion. According to French law the subse
quent marriage of the father and mother ren
dered the child legitimate, awl the it ourt rul
ed that in the eye of the law the party was
legitimate, although if the marriage had taken
place in Pennsylvania after the child was
born, it would have required an act of the
legislature to render it legitimate and entitled
to claim as heir at law its deceased p arent's
property.
Sugar, Salt and Fish
The Boston (Mass.) Traveler says : AVe im
ported last year sugar to the amount of k+-11,.
5.,a7),000, and paid , off $1,000,000 upon it in
the shape of duties. Our imports of salt
reached very nearly three millions, and the
duty upon this fell but little short of $600,-
000. These are items worth considering.
The benefits derived from the importation of
these duties is quite as "local" as that which
flows from the fishing bounties, or a fair pro
tection upon iron, which we so greatly need
in Pennsylvania. Let Senator Bigler and
uur Democratic Congressineu give the iron
interests of the Old Keystone a fair chance,
a 8 far as their influence and votes can do it,
Philadelphia Cattle Dlarket--May ;24th
The supply of Reef Cattle the past week
has been quite large, the offerings amounting,
at all the yards, to about 1300 hundred head.
Prices remained about the same, only a few
extra ones selling for more than $lO per 100
tbs. The market was quite lively, and all
offered were sold. The supply of sheep was
very good, amounting to nearly 500 head.
The Cow market was dull, and 250 head were
sold at from $3O to $6O for mach cows, and
from $lB to $25 for dry cows.
