Romance in Real Life
The Buoyrns Journal, says that a man living
near her: , lost hie wife, some years ago, in Ho
mer, New York ; that they had a little girl wbioh
ho gave to a friend and left the country. He
was gone ten years and returned, but could find
no trace of his child. She had two marks by
which he might know her—one toe was gone,and
she had a scar on her arm. The man gave her
up as lost to him, and finally settled near Bucy
rus and married. The rest we give from that
paper:
About six weeks ago he happened to pass by
the room in his hone° occupied by a servant girl
who had resided with Lim for nearly two years,
at a time when she was about to retire, and the
door being open, ho saw her foot. He merely
glanced at it, and happened to notice that the
little toe of the right foot was missing. He thought
nothing of it at the time, but, after retiring, the
idea struck him that, it might he the daughter ho
hal searched for so long. At first he dismissed
the thought as improbable, but it still forced it
self upon him, until finally he requested his wife
to go to the room and ascertain whether there
was or not marks of a scald upon her right arm.
She went, and, to his immense delight, reported
that the mark was there. The poor man was so
positive of her identity that the girl was awak
ened, and in the middle of the night was ques
tioned as to her origin.
She could only tell them that she did not
know her parents; that her earliest recollections
were that she had lived somewhere in the East
with a family named— (naming the fam
ily she had been left with by the woman origi
nally intrusted with her,) and at their death she
was taken charge of by the Overseers of the
Poor, a place provided for her. and she had come
to Bucyrus with a family and had supported her
self by doing housework since
This tallied so nearly with the already ascer
tained facts in the ease, that the father started
East with her the next thy, and, visiting the
different points she hail named, ascertained, to
his great joy, that ehe was in truth his daughter.
She is an extremely beautiful girl, of great
" natural intelligence, and though totally tmedn
cated, is still interesting.
She is now at Granville, Ohio, receiving an
education to fit her for the new station she has
assumed in life.
The lalstory of a Gun
An old gun has been added to the oabinet of
the Wisconsin Historical Society. Its history in
as follows:
" The gun was the property of John Prescott,
and was brought by him from Lancastershire,
England, who went first to Berbadoos, and owned
land there in 1636, and came to England about
1640. In 1645, Simian, the Indian proprietor of
Nashawog, offered to him and other persons a
tract of land ten miles in leag,th, which was ao
cepted, and the g;eaeral court subsequently con
firmed the deed. The town )7413 named Lancas
ter, in the preaeut county of Worcester, Massa
chusetts. John Prescott had occasion to use this
gum during ging Philip's Indian war of 1675; On
one occasion, as tradition has it, a number of
Indians made their appearance ct Prese,ott's old
mill, and hoisted the water-gate, when Prescott
took his gun heavily loaded and started towards
the mill, when the Indians retired to the hills
close by ; Prescott having fixed the mill, thought
it prudent to retrace his steps, but he did so
backwards, with his eye upon the foe, until ho
reached his house, when the Indians raised a
whoop, when Prescott concluded to give them a
specimen of his gunmanship ; and as he shot, they
scampered off. Afterwards visiting the spot
where the Indians were when he shot at them,
blood was found upon the ground. Tho Indians
ever after kept clear of the Prescott neighbor
hood. Mr. Prescott had at least seven children ;
and among them was the lion. Benjamin Pres
cott, the father of Wm. Prescott, who cora
-1 mended at Bunker Hill, and of Judge William
Prescott, of Boston. and great grandfather of
Wm. Prescott, the historian. The old gun in
question was given by Prescott to his daughter
Tabitha, wife of Silas Brigham, who in her old
age gave it to her grandson Prescott Brigham,
born in the year 1770, now a resident of- Sauk
county, Wisconsin, and by him presented to the
society. Prescott Brigham is the elder brother
f the pioneer settler of Dane county, Col. Eben
ezer Brigham, of Blue Mounds."
