COUNTY COMMIS SION ER'S In Pennsylvania, the office of miesioner is one of great itnportatie. Board of Commissioners is the e.seeuti . v county, having control of the levi.:s 3.11,1 r, t S of taxes, the charge of the publ:c, and what is moss important, att.. : art with the very responsible duty the public money. It is obvious teat l 't r sons elected to this office should po-4;,01 , intelligence, sound judgment, and a hor sir T e of financial ability. They are frequerny r.-- quired, in the discharge of their dr' !es tt, de cide upon questions of great inip6rtanee the tax-p .yOl-8, and they nre ewtstantly upon to decide as to the bebiirtj of th.- for costs, fees, and an infinite varary c expenditures. We have obaervcd it, Cincinnati, Pbilndelf h:a, and c,tihr Mrk.. corporations, the proceedings and t(colpi and expenditures in the COMMiesiontl ' s vflice are published once a week, or once a nioriti , , for the information of the publi. .1.0 Commissioners release a person from jail a: ~t assume the costs, the fact is made knoll n through the public papers, and each item f expense is placed before the public, the citizens may know what it costs them for their corporate government, and who are the, persons who are fed by the crumbs ben, the public crib. In cur county, the Auditocs report of the receipts and expendituzoß of the county is published in pamphlet form once year only. Why might not the trAnst.ctio in the Commissioners' office be published or_ •c a week in an abstract form, us the proceed. inge of the City Councils are publi-hc.d. Tbe expense would not be great, and such a irA liattion would afford great satisfaction to every tax-payer. It has been hitherto uniformly held. that it is sufficient to prove the receipt of the paper by the party charged therefor and thousands of cases have been adjudicats4 upon this principle. Orders from newspapers like orders for many other articles, are in the majority of cases verbal. The delivery and acceptance is necessarily the best pith: i. Lave and Suicide. A tragical circumstance has just transpired - in our midst, concerning which we have the fol lowing particulars : For some time past, 3 sash and blind maker, named Ldwiu Corey, aged about 42 years and a widower, has been imoinely attached to a married woman who works in a printing office iu School street. fin deeply Iva.; he devoted to her, that he has often been heard to declare that he - must marry her or die. As her husband—and her own virtuous inclination —stood in the way of his marriage to the °Nee , of his singularity misplaced affection, and as be had no hope that his desire would be consum mated, Corey determined to adopt the alterna tive Therefore, on Wednesday morning, he supplied himself with an ounce of lawinum in a vial and proceeded to the printing office in School street--having previously, however, taken liquor to the extent of more than half intoxicating himself. We are not informed what words, if any passed between Corey and the woman he so indiscreetly loved, but it is certain that he swal lowed the laudanum at a gulp—at the same time avowing his design to commit suicide—a design in which he succeeded. (From t-1 Northampton (Maas.) GetrAtt.A.l A Mauachusett +;, Boy in the India War- - Übiquity of the Yankees. Mr. Lewis Ferry, of Easthampton, has a scs in the British army in India. He left home last spring in the Niagara, for Liverpool, and while is the British service, joined the Bengal artillery, and prooeeded to the seat of war. His friends have recently received a letter from him, da.teii February 9, before Luoknow. He has not been heard from since the fall of that place, hut al the Bistiidh loss is small, and it is hoped he wa not killed. We are permitted to make the El lowing extract from his letter We are in camp before the Sopoys, and ex pect an attack from the enemy every day. Si: Colin Campbell is looked for to-morrow. We have thus far fought our way through the noun try among the blacks. Flow much longer the war will last, it is hard to tell—hut the blacks will get a warning from us soon. Money is a.- plenty here as the dirt under our feet, and I liave received my share in gold and silver. I never count it, and set very little value upon it, for I don't know when 1 shall be shot. The shots fly very hot on both sides every day, but the loss on our part is small. I am writing this on the ground, and am unable to give you the particu lars What funds, I have were taken in the city of Cawnpore, where the great slaughter Leek place; an account of which you have probably read in the papers. It was a bloody day 1 assure you. May I never see the like again ! "We landed at Calcutta on the 25th of No vember, and have been marching up the coun try about every day since. There is about cue chance in ten for my returning home." We were not surprised to hear that young Fer ry was in India fighting in the British service.— The übiquity of the Yankee is proverbial. They go everywhere, and engage in every speoies of business. Among the passes of the Rooky Monn tains, in the gold regions of California, alsug the shores of the Pacific, from the Russian Pos sessions on the north to the extreme southern point of Patagonia, along the Atlantic coasts, in all the islands of the sea, in all parts of the West ern hemisphere, engaged in the arts of peace or iu the prosecution of war—striving for gold or travelling for pleasure—digging up the sunken ships of Russia before Sebastopol, building rril ways, constructing ships—may ho seen the ever restless, roving sons of New England. No zone, torrid or frozen, escapes them ; no rnountain so rugged or difficult of ascent as to impede their progress ; no sea so wide or so stormy as to inter ceyt their constant march. We were forcibly reminded of this übiquity of oar race, when reading some years since an 143- count by an Englishman of his travels in Afr.da. Ho had penetrated far into the interior, and was proudly treading the arid sand of the desert, where, as he supposed, no foot of civilized wen had ever made its track. He was just on the point of congratulating himself on his good for tune in reaching at last a place where he w 0714 no longer encounter the Yankee, when, lookin g up, he beheld to his amazement a crowd of Arabs crouched upon a side hill, with a tall Yankee from New Hampshire, in their midst administering the temperance pledge '•'who ha! not heard or therhavee land Ist 'a.: .e res I.;(aFlait z in and truly r under tul not hu tc ,, r dero:l nt *,; : influcnoo tlvei :be r: 'I • that health and by the c.nvalct ,, ,n : , 1•46 , 1 , 1 - 11, fSitfnrr, t, thc, and Drugly...!t4 VIA! .1.:1 l'UbLiC, Vr::. 1 ~riteP; tin thilt 410 111. u~u:d,•.l )t &le r,' it • ' MMMOIII Ifr+ r f , r ~~~.. ,'.
