was drowned last week in the Little Chiques, at Mount Joy,
Lancaster county, Pa. She, in company with Miss Mary
M'Neal, ventured out upon the stream in a skiff. The boat,

creek., which at that time, owing to the recent rains, was
quite swoolen and rapid. Miss M'Neal caught a limb at.d

with her arms clasped firmly around a floating log, and was
loosened with the greatest difficulty.

Gn Wednesday, a letter was addressed to Dr. Parrish, by
the Mayor and other citizens, requesting him r. peat
his exhibition of Tue3day evening, which was so poorly at
tended Yesterday, the Mayor received the following reply :
PITTEBITRGa, May 13. 1858.
lIoN. 11. A. WEAvrx,:—Dear Sir :—Your kind proposition
is received, and I will be glad to accept the offer to meet
the people of your city on Friday evening. lam sure they
will not fail to appreciate the value of the cause, which has
for its object the elevation of a largo class of unfortunate
children from helpleis and degraded idiocy. And this mark
of their interest which has been extended to me and my
charge through you, is most gratefully appreciated by my.
self, as I am sure it will be by the gentlemen who compose
the Board of Directors of the Pennsylvania Training Echool
for Feeble Minded Children.
Yours most truly,
Accordingly, Dr, Parrish will give an exhibition of hie
pupils at Masonic Hall this evening, when we hcpo our citi
zons will manifest their interest in this noble enterprise by
their presence in numbers.
A REFaAMELY CUSTOMKE.—CharIes Kelly made informer .
tion before Mayor Weaver yesterday against a woman
named Mary Morris, who resides on Diamond alley, for
keeping a bawdy house. She was arrested and taken to
the Mayor's office, where a number of witnesses were ex.
amined, and the evidence going to show that the house
was a nuisance to the neighborhood, she was held to bail
for her appearance at Court. The Mayor announced that
the amount of bail would be fixed at one hundred dollars
Mary thought she was ill-treated, and got up to speak,
when she was quieted by Ler counsel, but she soon rose to
her feet again, end commenced pouring a torrent of per
aortal abuse on the Mayor, who very properly ordered her
to be taken to the watch house. While being taken back,
she made free use of her powers of speech, and the epithets
bestowed on the Mayor and his officers were choice selec-
tions from the Billingsgate vocabulary. Fcr her disorderly
conduct and contempt she was fined ten dollars, which she
was unable to pay, and nal consequently committed thirty
days in default.
CHARGE OP FALSE PRZTENCIP.—Jacob BooLyer, who owns
some houses in the Second Ward of this city, made infer
motion yesterday against a tenant of his, named Robin, be
fore Mayor Weaver. The charge was for false pretences in
giving to Boobyer a five dollar bill on the Central Bank of
Tennessee, which wrs not signed, the President and Cashier's
names being absent. Boobyer brought witnesses to prove
that he got the note from Ifobin, but it also appeared that
previous to his bringing the suit, he had passed the note to
a third person, who returned it to bim afierwerds. With
out the evidence of this third i arty the identity of the bill
could not be established, and the case was mcordingly dis
missed at the cost of Poobyer. If he wishes to recover the
value of the bill he will be obliged to sue again, and have
the proper witness in attendance.

TIIE SUCCESS WHICH ATTENDS THE USE OF
DB. J. HOSTETTER'S Celebrated &mach Bitters evinces at
once its virtues in ell cases of debility and disease of the
Stomach. Certificates almost without number have been
published, attesting its almost miraculous power in remov
ing those painful and fearful diseases. And at this time it
seems kilo to do more than call attention to the great reme
dy of the ago, in order to awaken public attention toils ex
cellence. It is the only preparation of the kind that is re
liable in all cases, and it is therefore worthy of the consid
eration of the afflicted. The Bitters are pleasant to the
taste, tvr, resablo in their effects, and altogether valuable as

THE GREAT SUCCESS which has ever attended the
ma of J. XI. Olin's Celebrated Stomach Bitters, and the nu
merous cert;ficates which are daily received, in their favor,
show omclusively that they are the greatest and most relia
ble preparation of the hind ever introduced to the public
and at this season, when logs of appetite is so prevalent, no;
one consulting their own interest can afford to do without
them. The Bitters aro pleasant to the taste and agreeable

preventive of most of the prevailing diseases of the day.

Weekly Review of Pittsburgh Markets.
Carefully Reported by JOSEPH SNowDEN, Superintendent of
the Merchants' Exchange.
The continued inclemency of the weather through
out the past week has interfered materially with busi
ness operations out of doors; the markets have,
therefore, been only moderately active, with scarcely
any change worthy of especial note, in the general
condition of trade. Tho orders from the country
continue to keep our jobbers at work, but it cannot
be said that they are actively engaged. In other de
partments a moderate degree of animation prevails,
with scarcely any noticeable feature since our review
of last week. The receipts of Produce are rather
light, and the transactions are entirely confined to
the local demand, without any speculative opera
tions. The rivers have again risen to a fine stage for
every description of navigation, but our steamers
find freights by no means plenty.
The Money market continues easy; the banks
readily absorb all the good paper afloat, and there
is, consequently, but little offered outside. The bank
statements show a reduction in the amount of paper
discounted, but this may be attributed to a falling
off in the amount of paper offered, the exigencies of
trade requiring less bank accommodation. Exchange
on the East is not so plenty; on Philadelphia and
Now York it is quotable at per cent. premium for
par, and on 3urroney; the latter being a decline
of thus showing an improvement in our currency.
Baltimore we still quote at par to .1 per cent. pre-

The supply in the market has greatly diminished. The
stock trains of the Tittsburgh, Fort Wayne and Chicago
Railroad now pass directly threugh to the depot of the
Pennsylvania Railroad on the other bide of the river, and
consequently much of the stock that was formerly offered
at the Allegheny yards is carried over for immediate ship,
meat cast; our butchers and dealers have, consequently,
fewer lots to choose from, and our Cattle markets are in
ured to that extent. The quality of the Cattle offered was
enerally good, and the prices of last week were well main
tained; some of the Cattle included in the sales below men

Its advantages over other Soaps are:—let. It is cheaper
to use, one pound being equal to three of common rosin
Soap. 2d. half the time need only be occupied in washing
when this Soap is need in place of other Soap. ad. Labor
in washing can be nearly dispensed with, as the clothes
will require little if any rubbing, thus avoiding their wear
on the wash-board. 4th. Roiling the clothes is unnecessary
when this Soap is used, and hard or salt water answers
equally as well as soft. 6th. Printers, Machinists, Painters
and others, find it far superior to other Soaps. It speedily re
moves grease, tar, paint, printers' ink and dirt from the
hands, leaving the skin soft, and free from chapping.
To avoid the labor of rubbing the clothes, and the use of
the wash-board, the following directions should be followed
For the washing of eight or ten of a family, take ono
pound of Soap, cat It into shavings, and dissolve in one
gallon of hot water; put the clothes into a tab containing
about ten gallons of wares water; pour in the dissolved
Soap, and stir thoroughly. Let them soak twenty to thirty
minutes, wring out, and rinse in warm water once, cold
water twice. A very dirty wrist-band, or seam or grease
spots, may require a slight rubbing, but ottierwise the
clothes will come out clean and white, without rubbing or
boiling. Cold water may be used in place of hot, requiring
about double time in soaking.
