The glass nianuieot urrel at this entablishrnent is of good quality. In the judo,. glare factory now in opi ration there are te a polo is moo, and these turn out from six to seven boxes of glass each per day, making in all from sixty to seventy_ ea, hates daily, or about four hundred a week. In this branch of the mnuufitcture about forty hands are empioyed, two blowers to end' pot. The vial and bottle factory has one furnace, containing seven pots, and four blowers work at ono pot. In thin de partment about sixty hands are employed, who turn out from one hundred and fifty to one hundred and seventy-live gross of vials and bottles daily, r f every size nod description. A large proportion of these are mineral water bottles, and we arc Wormed that the orders for this article this season have exceeded two thousand gross, one firm in St. Louis having ordered twelve hundred gross. To those who do not understand the macdue operandi of the manufacture of glass, a short description of the process will be acceptable, and we will give a sketch of its rationale, for the benefit of our country readers more especially. • A mixture is made of sand, soda ash, limo and salt, in cer tain proportions, and to this Is sometimes added a portion of cutlet or broken glass. This mixture is placed in the pots In the furnaces in the evening, and in the morning, from twelve to fourteen hence afterwards, it Is welted into glass and ready to work. In the manufacture of glass, the blower takes a sufficient quantity of glass on the end of his pipe, the quan. tity varying with the sizo of the vial to be blown, and after rolling it over a few times on a smooth slab, drops it into the mould and blows it until it reaches tho proper size and strap , The bottle is then detached from the pipe and the neck f nished with another instrument; a boy provided with a lona fork immediately carries It MT to an oven, in which it is paced for the purpose of being tempered. After being kept at a certain heat for some time, the oven is allowed to cool 4iminElly, and the ware Is completed, It is then trans ferred to the packing room, where it is sorted and tested, and all ware not calming up to a certain standard is cast aside, and the blower is not paid for it. A good blower will make from three to four gross of bottles or six to eight gross of vials daily, the wages for which amounts to between sixty and eighty dollars per mouth. The manufacture of window glass le more complicated. roe glass, which is difftrently proportioned from that used for vials, is first blown into cylinders from one-sixteenth to an eighth cf an inch thick, about five inches in diameter, and from bur to five feet long, open at both ends. After being allowed to cool, these cylinders are split from end to end on ono side, by means of a piece of hot iron. They are then carried to the oven room, where the cylinders are placed in a very hot oven, the split upwards; the cylinders are arranred at certain distances on a revolving wheel, and, as they reach a certain point, when partially melted, they are opened by a man, with a long iron instrument. passing on to the next aperture they are now almost at a melting heat, and are flattened down by anot' er workman, with a heavy block of wood attached toe long handle. Moving on, the now flattened glass passes Into a cooler atmosphere, and is loaded by machinery on the first of a train of email iron care, and, as car after car is loaded in this manner, the first passes on, till, on reaching the outside of the oven, it is quite cool and thoroughly tempered. Those sheets, when they come out, are about three feet by four, sometimes larger. They are carried to the cutting room, where two men, with diamonds, take glass, examine, select, and cut it into the different sizes, with an astonishing rapidity. It is then packed into boxes of fifty feet each, when it is ready fur market. This factory tgtu,s out about twenty thousand boxes annually. They entililtiy in their business about one cask cf soda ash daily. The number of hands employed In these works is about one hundred and seventy-five, when ell the "houses" era going. At present they employ a'..out one hundred and thirty, sixty in the vial department, forty in the window glass factory, and thirty in the packing department. The average wages of each of these hands is about fifty dollars per month. The work only ton hours a day. Mr. John V. Anti', a fine mechanic, is foreman of the vial factory, and Mr. William illaye, who understands his department per lectly, is chief of too WIMIOW house.' a.s.i...ea.e is cue general mimagtr and superintendent of the works. It is pleasant to see these "-sturdy eons of toil " at their labors, and to know that the prosperity of our city is built, not upon the slippery basis of wild speculation, but on the combined basis of labor and capital, and as long as we give due encouragement to the former, without allowing it to be hard pressed by the latter, we need have no fears for the future of our city. We shall, at an early day, pay a visit to other of our manufactories, and give the result of our oL• servations. Till MINSTRELS !LT Miss KIMBERLY'S TIIEATILE.—We have not the least doubt but that two-thirds of all classes of our citizens will go to hear the renowned troupe of minstrels who are now giving their Ethiopian entertainments at Miss Kimberly's Theatre. No kind of amusement draws so well in this city as that which is now fashionably termed Negro Opera. While first class dramatic performances aro given to almost empty benches, a company of minstrels will come among us and fill a hall or a theatre nightly for weeks. The troupe now engaged at the old Theatre is compered of par ties well known to our citizens. Lon Morris and hie brother Billy, better known hero as the "Mocking Bird," Johnny Pell, Trowbridge and Prescott, were for many years attached to Ordway's .12.eleans, and Dick Bitter has performed many successful engagements, and by ono and all has been ac knowledged the champion female and jig dancer of the world. Then, in addition, there are the little 1 rodigies' Master Rentz and Little Tommy, only eleven and thirteen years old, who really perform wonders. 01 course all the young folks will want to see these little chaps, and we would suggest to the management the policy of giving a Matinee on Saturday afternoon, so that families may be able to bring out all the children. ENDED LN SIICKS.—On Tueeday afternoon Mr. John Herron, who occupies a lot in the Ninth Ward, made complaint against a number of lumbermen for occupying more than thirty-two feet in width, with their rafts, which he alleged was a great inconvenience to him, and contrary to a city ordinance. Four or live of the parties were arrested and taken before Mayor Weaver, who examined the flatter and hold over a decision until yesterday morning, when he de. cided that the ordinance relative to the Allegheny wharf, under which this prosecution was laid, did not extend be yond the aqueduct, and that the case was therefore dis missed. In the vicinity of Evans' house con. siderable excitement still prevails, and though rumors of ev:ry kind, some of them ridiculous in the extreme, were freely circulated, yet nothing reliable, in addition to what we aiated yesterday, has been developed. Ouo little lv y makes a statement that be beard high words In Evans' house, and that when lie went there the door was slammed in his face; but the story is not generally credited. To-mor row the affair will undergo another investigation, when the additional facts will be made public. —The unfortunate victim was interred yesterday after. noon. bhe was followed to the grave by an Immense nnnt • er of persons, and up to the departure of the funeral, the sidewalks In the neighborhood of the house were completely blocked up by au anxious crowd. Its advantages over other Soaps are:—let. It is cheaper to use, one pound being equal to three of common rosin Soap. 2d. Half the time need only be occupied in washing when this Soap is used In place of other Soap. ad. Labor in washing can be nearly dispensed with as tho clothes will require little if any rubbing, thus avoiding their wear on the wash-board. 4th. Boiling the clothes Is unnecessary when this Soap is used, and hard or salt water answers equally as well as soft. sth. Printers, Machinists, Painters and others, Snd it far superior to other Soaps. It speedily re moves grease, tar, paint, prieters' ink and dirt from the hands, leaving the skin soft, and free from chapping. To avoid the labor of rubbing the clothes, and the use of the washdinird, the following directions should be followed : For the washing of eight or ten of a family, take one pound of Soap, cut It Into shavings, and dissolve in ono gallon of hot water; put the clothes into a tub containing about ten gallons of warm water; pour in the dissolved Soap, and stir thoroughly. Let them soak twenty to thirty minutes, wring out, and rinse in warm water once, cold water twice. A very dirty wrist-barid, or seam, or grease spots, may require a slight rubbing, but otherwise the clothes will come out clean and white, without rubbing or boiling.
