My Muse some humbugs late expeaed to view,
Though to such task she's far from'being equal;
To those, d tar public, now I'll add a few;
Take them instructively, by way of sequel.
The ladies, treeing reason's hopeless wreck,
Expose the ruin with their own complexion,
By wearing bonnets merely on the neck,
The head no longer being worth protection.
Of some now work, the press applauding says:
"The merits of the hook are most surprising."
Examine, and you'll find the weed of praise
re measured by amount of ethertising,.
Eschew their etaieseents, and ignore the brags,
But count the dollars in a Bank of issue,
You'll had one thousand repreeen'tire rags
For every dollar you can find in specie.
Railroads a handsome dividend declares,
.S. desire to invest In stocks, to kindle,

Bat wc ethical stock, soon provers the whole a ewindle.
True policy directs us to [mire,
And if the property's reduced to ashes,
We think the payment of the loss secure;
Through policy, the corporation smashes.
In western wilds prospective cities rise, -
Folks flock to buy lots, nothing could be cheaper,
'Till panic shows their worth, and beauty Ilea
In artiste' skill, depleting them on paper.
Some foreign singer now is all the rage,
None are so rash to hint it.is aftsrle,
Yet might as well, to find oat what she says,
Jost listen to a locomotive whistle.
"Sass thought all sinners certainly chang'd sides,
And whitSd the tempter, by those greet revivals,
Yet, from the number of late suicides,
'Tis feared, alas, Old Scratch has made reprisals.
Lottery gamblers, who have cash to spare,
Hove adverse chances; let us here unfold them :
They're full ten thctisand, if conducted fair—
One million, with the rogues that now control them
Crab cider, once so wholesome, pure and plain,
A beverage quite grateful, mild and placid,
Is made dyspeptic, foaming, false champagne
By drugging it with vile tattarlc acid;
To show how whisky mounts the wretch's brain,
Would take a pen like Byron's, Scott's or Demme,
By strychnine poison driven thus insane,
Ile dies the victim of delirium tremens.
The dry good vender, In his fabrics Praise,
Vows such fast colors ne'er was pressed on cotton;
The duped buyer, believing what he soya,
Next finds the colors fast on wash tubs bottom.
Grocers make up your packages with care,
Then weigh them, with correct exacting rigor,
Deducting the original merited tare;
lloops, lIICIA and cordtgo go for tea and sugar.
Brost priceless cures, to take the druggist's word,
To furnish all his customers he's able,
And yet we lied the chief expense homed,
Is in the outside, gilded, showy label.
Should you irons brokers a email loan demand,
Their mede of lending, you'll find by your labor,
Not what 'tie worth, but what they think you'll stand,
Thus profit by distresses of their neighbor.

Potatoes, chalk and alum, mixed to cheat us,

You know not in the milkman's day's supply,
Whether most milk or water you are buying;
Yolks say he'd lose more If his pump ran dry,
Than if n couple of his cows were dying.
There's Brigham Young will cost some scores of lives
. To rent Wm, end his full stock'd Turkish harem;
And yet, with his plurality of wives,
We've seen one wife alone would quickly scare him.
Bur go it, humbug, we may safely say,
Fur thus 'twill be until times termination;
Mankind will still upon each other prey,
Cupidity forbids all reformation.
THE CONTRABINDIST'S REVENGE.
CONFESSION
[CONTINUED.]
For themselves, the plan was this : They were
to go off, collect four or five days' provision and
water for the hooker, and settle their affairs in
this country, for even they had much to settle ou
so short a notice. This done, Quin was to be
sent to inform me that all was ready for our es•
cape, when we should, immediately on complet
ing our purpose, flee to a certain place on tho
coast where they were to be waiting, embark
with them, and make sail for the coast of Eug•
land, there to lurk till the noise of the affair
should blow over.
For all that night and next day I kept watch
within the ruin, sometimes going to look after
the horse, or for food or drink, but mostly sit
ting on the pile of stones over the entrance to the
vault, in which I could often indistinctly hear him
stirring about.
When the second night came round, Quin came
to inform me they were all ready with the hook
er. Thereupon, with 'stern alacrity, we com
menced removing the stones from over the trap,
and, lighting c splint of bog-pine, jumped down
together.
To our amazement, Ormond wasnot to be seen.
There lay the cord with which his hands and
feet had been bound, bat where was he ? The
question was immediately resolved. The vent
which I have said we constructed to cause a cur
rent of air for the still-fires, this ho had discov
ered ; and, with tho help of an old reaping hook
he had found, wherewith also htahad out the
cords, had enlarged it from a few inches to seve
ral feet in size.
This was n,t so difficult, for the damp had
regularly sapped the wall, and the great, angu
lar, ill built stones would come away, in the
hands of a strong man, with much readiness.—
Our attention was directed to it by hearing a
sound of violent struggling, and, on darting
across the vault to where the aperture gaped,
we found within it the body of our prisoner.—
His head was outside the wall, which was here
about eight feet in thicknessa, and his shoulders
had stuck fast in the outer opening, which, owing
to the mortar being hard and firm from proxim
ity to the air, ho could not so easily enlarge.—
With a wild shout of joy. we caught hold of his
heels and drew him gradnally in, securing him
the while by binding the cord firmly around his
limbs.
Though much spent with hunger and thirst,
and the labor of excavating the old wall, still he
struggled much and violently, and would yet
have been a match for either of us singly, but in
the hands of both it was unavailing ; and as last
flashed and covered with perspiration, his eyes
wildly glancing, his heart beating, and his breath
panting, he lay on the floor of the vault, his
ankles and knees bound firmly together, and his
hands twisted and bound behind his bank.
We waited a minute or so. As we etood,Qaln,
wiping the moisture from his brow, whispered
'lladn't we better do it here 7"
Ormond hoard this and trembled excessively;
then, in a low whining voice, he implored ns to
have mercy on him ; then, breaking out sudden •
ly, with a voice that made the vault and the
whole ruin ring, screamed "Murder 1" but,kick
lug the iron shod toe of my brogue into his
month, I put an abrupt atop to this.
" No," said I, in reply to Quin, " I have a
plan of my own. Let's hoist him out of the
vault."
Thereupon, seizing him, we dragged him, vain
ly kicking and wriggling his corded limbs up
through the trap into the cold air of night, and
tins.lly,outside the ruin.
" Now," said I to my-comrade; "go fetch me
first, the cart, anti. put it here, then bring out
hiq horse'; you will find 4 tied to a stump close
toßrian's arch."
He did so, I, the while standing over my
victim, who groaned deeply, but did not speak.
When the horse was brought out. with the help
of Quin I proceed to yoke him to the car, and
effected it, though with very groat difficulty,
from the spirit of the animal, and his ignorance
of those who were handling him. Having com
pleted this, we placed Ormond in the cart.—
bound as ho was, and, springing up in front and
catching up the reins,—
" Now, Quin," raid I, " that is all I want from
you ; look out for yourself; off with you to the
hooker,and tell them that, if I don't come to them
before sunrise, they may shove off, and leave me
to my luck."
Upon that, allowing the horse to go forward,
we moved on, and Quin, standing for a little to
loOk after us, plunged into the darkness, and
was off.
As soon as Ormond saw himself alone in the
