Evans seemed to Le in erect distract, and alleged that come person had murdered his wifo. I saw no instrument by which the deed might have ben committed. I did net retire to bed until after eleven o'clock, when Mr. Evans had nut yet got home. Mrs. Jane Sloan, sworn—My attention seas called to the bowie of Evans by the cries that I heard. I saw deceased lying in a pool of blood, and entirely dead; saw her child lying close by its mother; Evan' was also there, and al leged that his wife came down stairs about form o'clock, complaining of the toothache; that when he came down he found her lying on the floor: I saw no fire in the stove. My establishment i 3 a pottery. 1 conversed with them for five or ten minutes; that was about fifteen minutes of eleven. They came out cf the shop to the end of the lot on Ohio street, when I conversed a few moments with Evans and the rest of them; I said it was time to go to bed and left them, each appearing to go toward his respective home. There did not appear to be anything wrong with Evans; he was perfectly sober as far as I could discern; Evans is a carpenter „lames .11'1 icker, sworn—Was in company with Mr. Evans last night above the pottery. In company with three others went into Wolf's to got some beer; Evans came in after wards, and appeared to know three of us; one of the men asked Evans to take a glass of beer; he said he would take a glass of good brandy; the barkeeper said he had neither good nor bad brandy, and Evans drank a glass of beer; think he repeated the doss; we had two drinks, and think he had also. Left him on Boyle street, proceeding towards home; he lived two or three equarea from me. D'. sworn.—Made a careful examination of the body of deceased; found the throat cut; both of the jugular veins were cut, and the neck bone broken backwards; took a cloth and tome water and washed the head nod face. Found an incision in the angle of the left eye, as if inflicted with the fist; found considerable extravaeated bloat about the incision. The bat of the eye was struck. The body was extensively horned on the left side, extending from the head to the feet. I suppose the clothing mast have burned at least five minutes to cases such Injuries on that ride. The clothes on the loft aide were charred exceedingly, and would draw the conclusion that her el flies were Bet en fire after her throat was cut and she was lying on the floor. Do not think it possible that the deceased could have cut Ler own throat. Whoever did it, must have been intent ou hie purpose, as he cut around the neck bone and left it bare. VOLUNTARY STATZ.VENT OP DAVID S. EVANS, (After being duly cautioned that he need not ray anything that would criminate himself) A few minutes before four o'clock this morning, my wife called me and told me to get up; that she had the tooth-ache. I got up, put fire in the stove, and put the kettle on; then I went back up stairs, and just as I was getting into bed, the got up; then she said, "What's the use of g ing buck to bed?" It then wanted a few minutes of form o'clock; told her I had nothing partic ular to get up so early for ; she said she would get up; that she wanted to go to market. I went to bad, and after I got in, she asked me if she could take the change I hail in my pocket; I said no, I want that myself; I told her oho had better take five dollars out of that pile and go to some butcher that she knew, and get in change gold, that I might replace it again. She called the oldest little girl to get up and take the baby; she took the candle Mad went down stairs into the kitchen ; I then fell over into a kind of a lit tle doze, and when I awake' ed again it wanted a few min utes of five o'clock. I heard some one walking through the hall ; thought Smith had got up; I got up, put on my pants and boots, and went down. When I opened the door, found her lying ..here, went up and put my hand on her,and foam' she was dead: went out to the next door neighbor, think the name is M'lntyrd; went part of the way to the home and eallooed to him, I don't know what; I ran hack to the house; alter that, I daft know that I have any further statement to make. [Here the bloody razor was exhibited to the prisoner.) Don't know whose razor this is; bed cue like it; I shave myself; generally kept the viz - A' ou the mantel piece. [A piece of flannel in which the razor was wrapped was examined by Evans.] It looks like what I had my money in; had eleven ten dollar go , d pieces and two five dollar gold pieces; had D. S. stamped ea one of the gold paces, on the opposite side from the eagle; had tho money lest evening at five o'clock; t..k it out and lookea at it, thinking I would give the landlord, when be came, one dol lar I had in my pocket and one of these. Signe i I DAVID S. EVANS. The Coroner's Jury, after weighing the above evidence, rendered a verdict to the effect that Louisa Evans came to her death from ono deep mortal wound in the throat, which the believe was inflicted with a razor in the hands of her husband, David S. Evans. The prisoner wise retained in custody until last evening at five o'clock, when he wits committed to jai' to await a a carer nt,r tcn I:7S. family of ni' ti y-nogr, further hearing en Friday. By a careful examination of the above testimony, It will be seen that there are some singular discrepancies. It Is not probable that a man whose wife wee being murdered in the hotiao would run out into the street to alarm his neigh bors, without first making an effort to rmcue her. Or if she were already dead and her clothing on fire, any man with common humanity would first endeavor to extinguish the flam e, especially as he was not tin much frightened to go no to her and touch her to sea if she was dead. 11,sidee the razor with which the deed was accomplished was the property of the prisoner, and the piece of flannel with which the blood was wiped from the weapon ho acknowledges "looked like what he had his money in." This story about the money is contradicted. Evans, who is a carpenter by trade, had not been at work for arms time, and the day be fore the murder he had borrowed five dollars from hie land lord. Ills story may be true, but five o'clock in the morn_ ing is a strange time in the day for thieves to make a de_ scent upon a house for the purpose of obtaining booty, which is the idea Evans seeks to convey. The affair is still somewhat clouded, yet we think further developments may be expected at the examination on Friday. Throughout the day a crowd of persons surrounded the house of death, and some were bald enough to penetrate the interior, where the score was sickening. One part of the room was bespattered with the blood of the murdered wo. man, the carpet and floor were charred, and the odor of burnt flesh was discernible in the room. The infant child of tbo deceased was found lying within a few feet of her body, and it is said to be so seriously injured by the fall as to render its recovery doubtful. This is indeed ono of the most terrible crimes we have over been called on to record, and we hope we may never have a similar one. We trust that the mystery still con nected with the affair may be speedily explained. Ma 9. CIIMILOTTE BLIJEIS has received the beautiful piece of music, Just issued, composed by Stephen C. WC learn some of the particulars of a horrible affair in Mercer county, resulting io the death of a young married woman named Kerr, formerly a Miss White, who has been residing with her father in Lackawannack township. four miles from the tewn of Mercer. It appears Mrs. Kerr's hue baud hit for California upwards of five years ago, where he has remained ever since, but is shortly expected to return home. Some time last November she became enclente, by ons Levi Jones, as she alleged, the proprietor of a line of hacks running from Mercer to New Castle. Terrified at the thought of her husband returning and finding her in such a condition, she culled iu a Do. Rogers, (who further called in a Dr. Schull, of G:eeuville,) fur the purpose of producing an abortion. She died shortly' eftrr. This le the statement of Mrs. White, the mother of the deceased. On the other side, Dr. Rogers declares he was not present until after the criminal act was committed, and that they told him Dr. s . had performed the operation. Rogers has been arrested; Sehull has not yet been taken Into custody. l'o , rs. Kerr was about twenty-five years of ago, and is described as being a very)tre.antiful woman. A Coroner's investigation took - place, and as might be expected, intense excitement per vades the community for miles around, in consequence of the developments of this most horrible " taking If " We expect to learn the facts mere definitely in a day or two. Olin's Celebrated Stomach Bitters, and the net. morons certificates which aro daily received, in their favor, show conclusively that they are the greatest and most relia ble preparation of the kind ever introduced to the public; and at this season, when loss of appetite is so prevalent, no one consulting their own interest can afford to do without them. The Bitters are pleasant to the taste and agreeable in their effects.
