Eunice. Said Vanderleiste asked me how long the tont
would remain; I answered him, all night. We left the
above named place about daylight; when we arrived at
Steubenville I remarked to Mr. Forsyth, our ascend clerk,
that the man who wee so noisy and drunk aboard the boat
was missing. I thought nothing more about him, supposing
he had been left on board steamer Eunice. The Belmont
went onto Louisville, and returned to this place, when I
heard aft old lady enquiring about her eon; I remarked, I
did not know anything about him, but there was a traveling
bag or satchel in the office, which she was shown, and
claimed by her as her missing eon's. Anything further in
regard to the matter deponent kuoweth not.

Having noticed several articles in the newspapers con
cerning the drowning of Charles Vand,rkiste cff the steamer
Belmont, the following i 3 a correct statement of the affair
as near as I can remember Charles Vanderkiste en
gage deck passage on the Belmont for Cincinnati on the 17th
of December last. My attention was first attracted by ob.
serving him on the wharf that afternoon, in company with
his wife, he being intoxicated at the time. I saw nothing
more of him until ten or eleven o'clock that night. I was
sitting in the ball, when he came ho and asked for liquor,
which the barkeeper refused him, his appearance indicating
that he had already been drinking too freely. Ho then
went down stairs, and that was the last I saw of him. Next
morning Ur. Peppard remarked to me that he had not seen
the man who had created such a disturbance the evening
before. Having landed at Now Cumberland during the
night, and laid alongside the steamer Ennio), we supposed
be had either goes ashore or on board the Eunice. We
were surprised on oar return to Pittsburgh by a visit from
his mother and wife, who stated they had never heard any
thing of him since he left here. We gave them all the in
formation concerning him that we know.

After hearing those statements, and taking into consider
ation the fact that Vanderkiste had been at Now Cumber
land on the Belmont, and that his body had been found
nearly three miles above that point, the Mayor concluded
that the crow of the boat could have no knowledge of his
death, and accordingly dismissed the whole matter. The
officers of the boat date that the stories circulated by the
two Mrs. Tanderkistes, mother and wife of the deceased,
have been very detrimental to the interests of the boat.
Brom the evidence contained in these statements it is quite
probable that Vanderkiste, after getting off the Belmont at
New Cumberland, wandered up the river, and being very
much intoxicated, fell into the river and was drowned.

for this institution will be commenced. this afternoon and

Market street, for the benefit of this noble charity, founded
by Rev. Mr. Passavant, and still under his care. We be
speak for the benevolent ladles a cordial response from a
generous public, f.)r not only is the cause most worthy of it,
but the ladles have spared no pains to make this occasion
one of great interest and attraction. Let all attend who
can, and thus each one will do his part toward assisting in
this excellent work.
THEATRE.—The Morris, Pell and Trowbridge Minstrels
opened at the Theatre to a full house last evening. They
are, without exception, the best Ethiopian minstrels now
traveling. Their singing is of the first order, especially
that of the young prodigy, Master Rentz, whose voice is
truly wonderful. All the jokes and comicalities are new;
we are not compelled to listen to a rehash of antiquated
newspaper jokes, but there is a freshness and originality
about the witticisms of Billy Morris and Johnny Pell which
renders them very acceptable. We feel warranted in saying
that this company will be successful here—especially when
such an attraction as Dick filter is added to it.
FOSTER'S NamosaL.—Mr. Neafie commence] his engage
ment at the National last evening, under anything
but favorable auspices. We were really sorry to see
so slim a house. His personation of the character of
Damon was equal to any we have seen, and superior to most.
This evening Mr. N. appears in a sterling play called "Civi
lization, or the Indian at Court," in which he sustains the
character of Hercule, the Indian. The piece is well cast
and we hope to pee a better hcuse.
KIEPOG A Puaocpus Hon.—Ann M'Claulay made oath be.
fore Mayor Weaver yesterday against a family named Reams,
who reside on Point street, in the First Ward, charging them
with keeping ferocious kegs, and setting forth that on Erin'
day one of them came air ng sad took a child of hero, only
five years old, by the leg, and carried it some distance down
street, and that had assistance not arrived tho child would
have been devoured. Warrants were issued, and the pro•
prietors of the offending porker will likely be arrested
to-day.
BALE OP ELEGANT Funarroan Tars Alonarsch—At 10 o'clock
this morning, in Davis' second floor sales room, Fifth street,
will be sold, by order of the Administrator, the extensive
variety of elegant Pittsburgh made Furniture, which was
yesterday so much admired by all visitors. The articles are
of the very choicest styles, modern and antique; and being
arranged to be sold in the order of printed catalcgue,makes
attendance and parchasingpleaantand c:nvenlent; so that
the ladles can give this eale their attention.
Rana= ex OFFiczn.—A man, who gave his name as Pell,
became disorderly in a beer hall yesterday, throwing a beer
glass at a person in the hTuse. Ho was ejected from the
premises, and on the outside ho picked up a stone and threw
it through the windows. An officer attempted to arrest him,
when he struck him, broke loose, and ran down Fifth street.
He was captured, taken to the watch house and fined ten
dollars for his afternoon's amusement.
A max by the name of Taggart, from a place called Web
eter, on the Monongahela river, above Monongahela City,
died yesterday afternoon very suddenly et the National Ho.
tel on Water street. He had been drinking " Minnie rifle
whisky " pretty freely for the past two days, and was carried
to his bed very drunk only a few in inutea before he died.
Doctor Tindle was called in, but the man was dead ere ho
reached him.
REAL ESTATE AND STOCKS AT AUCTION.—This evening, at
eighl o'clock, Mr. Davis will sell in his second floor sales
rooms, Fifth street, by order of Executors, Real Estate and
Ground Relit of William Anhui's, deceased. Also, by order
of Orphans' Court, the valuable Real Estate of the Rev-
John Ta•sey, deceased. At the same time a list of valuable
stocks. The Executors and Administrators have ordered
that the above sales shall be positive and without reserve
Imrsoviso.—Yesterday morning there was not a single
common case before the Mayor. Monday morning is un
usually dull, and it is a gratifying evidence that the ordi
nance relative to selling liquor on Sunday is rigidly en
forced. However, it might be more so, as we saw ono well
known establishment in full blast on Sunday night.
COL Joan DICOREIZAD, recently of Indiana, Pennsylvania,
is about to open the Perry House on Duquesne Way. This
hotel has been thoroughly cleaned, painted and papered, and
will be newly furnished. We would recommend this house
to all who desire a quiet, comfortable home, awl we think
Mr. Moorh-ad will make an admirable host.

a few days ago, by a gentleman, on the beauty and sim
plicity of her silk dress. She replied, "I am glad you like
my dress; it cost just seven dollars. I purchased it at A.
WTighe's, corner of Grant and Fifth streets, where you can
find one bundred more of the same sort at seven dollars a
dress."

cently ; Michael Loughren, of this city, for an improved
spike machine; David Alter and Samuel A. Hill, of Free
port, for an improvement in revolving retorts for the distil
lation of coal ; John Little, of Johnstown, for an improve
ment in straw cutters.
Tne case of the Bluff Mining Company va. James W.
Woodwell, fcr the recovery of a subscription alleged to have
been made to the capital stock of said company, was still
on trial in the District Court yesterday.
Meson &Turman had no baldness of importance to trans•
act yesterday. Sunday in Allegheny, as well as on this side,
was very quiet. The Germans were celebrating the inaugu
ration of bock beer, but as they conducted their festivities
in a quiet way, they were not molested in their enjoyment.
CraSTRUCTERG Tu SIDESULLES.—Quito a number of mer
chants doing business on Wood and Market streets, were
before the Mayor, yesterday, charged with violating a city
ordinance in leaving goods on the sidewalks in front of their
Acmes for display. They were fined and discharged.

Ceum, will deliver a lecture this evening in Masonic Mall
on South America. Admission twenty-five cents.
A May, whose name we did not learn, was thrown out of
the St. Clair Hotel, last evening, and his head striking
against the pavement, ho was severely injured.

Marine Hospital, near this city, with the articles of Provis
ions, Medicine, etc., enumerated in said forms. The qnan
ties stated aro estimated with reference to the several num
ber of patients lu the Hospital, but the United States reserve
the right to take more or less of said articles, accordingly
as they may be actually required. If the articles delivered
at tho Hospital aro not in the judgment of the Physician,

will require little if auy rubbing, thus avoiding their wear

moves grease, tar, paint, printers' ink and dirt from the
hands, leaving tho Skin soft, and free from chapping.
To avoid the labor of rubbing the clothes, and the use of
the wash.board, the following directions should be followed:
For the washing of eight or ten of a famlly, take ono
pound of Soap, cut it into. shavings, and dissolve in ono
gallon of hot water; put the clothes into a tub containing
about ten gallons of warm water; pour in the dissolved
Soap, and stir thoroughly. Lot them soak twenty to thirty
minutes, wring out, and rinse in warm water once, cold
water twice. A very dirty wrist-band, or seam, or gesso
spats, may require a slight rubbing, but otherwise the
clothes will come out clean and white, without rubbing or
boiling. Cold water may be used in place of hot, requiring
about double time in soaking.
