We hear) the following capital story yester
day, and only regret that we cannot tell it as it
was told to us:
A banker in Dubuqe, whom we shall call \ r.
ly, for short, found it necessary a short
time ago to susr end busines, and accordingly
closed his doors, and issued a card to his deposi
tors, in which he stated that he hoped soon to
be able to resume again. The day after Mr. M.
had closed his doors, ho was met by a Hibernian
miner who had $6,000 deposited wan him, and
acoosted thus:
"Good morning, Mr. M: Faith an' it's well
you're looking this morning, considering the
weather. But, sure, it's sorry I am. Mr. M., to
tee that card of yours in papers. But never do
you mind such trifles as that, mon—take courage
and hold up your head as high as iver—the
throublo of the thing will soon blow over. And
as for that $6,000 balance of mine, just kapo
it as long as you want it—l have no use for the
lousy dollars—and I know yees an' honest mon,
and perfectly good for tha same at any time.—
Kape it, sir, and pleasant dreams be wid ye."
Mr. M. expressed his thanks, and the banker
and depositor separated. But on the following
day Mr. M. was startled from his "pleasant
dreams" by the presentation of a check for $6,-
000, bearing thejnamo of his Hibernian friend.
Not knowing how to understand the matter, Mr.
M. sent for Patrick, when the following expla
nation took place :
"Well, you see, Mr. M., Peggy, that is, my
wife, has been raisin the very divil about the
money—and just to pacify the poor ignorant era
tur that it was safe, I thought, be dad, that I'd
jist send for it and count it all over before her
' ugly face, and then she'd consent to my leaving
it with you, together wid the other $4,000 that
is givin us BO much throble to kapo from being
stolen from us."
To such an explanation, together with the
now temptation of $4,000 additional, the ban
ker could take El) exoeption-30 he counted out
the $6,000 in short. But that was the end of
the Irishman.
The banker meeting him some time afterwards,
desired anotner explanation.
"Outh, the thruth is, Mr. 11 f., it's myself that
has been ashamed to see yeee. Peggy, that divil
of a wife of mine, you see, has hid the money,
and bother me if I can find it all, at all, and that
i 3 just the thrath, sir."
The banker made a g raceful tender of his hat,
but Pet generously declined to aoaept the same,
alt hough justly entitled to it.

Cheap Living
Much has been said lately in the public press
about the cost of living. The San Francisco
Tl7lc World gives the following funny specimen
of how John Chinaman lives in the land of gold:
We have had statistics from merchants, me
chanics and laboring men; and if everybody is
not fully '' posted,' -it's their own fault. The
mania for giving their household matters to the
public has extenclod even to John Chinaman, as
the following interesting document will show:

PHONOGRAPHY.—The art of phonographic re
porting is the best ever invented, but neverthe
less sometimes leads to mistakes Not long since
a member of Congress was making a speech, in
which he initimated that truth was much dearer
to him than party, quoting the Latin, " Amieur
Socrater, amicus Plati es ae major veritus."
(Soor.ites is m 7 friend, Plato is my friend but
truth is mnch more my friend ) ` This appeared
neat day in thc2eport as follow': "I may cuss
SJcrn.tes, I may cues Plato, said Major Veritas !"
Tee sounds were somewhat like, but then there
was a little difference in the meaning. •
Oa another occasion, Senatorßrighthad some
thing to say about his constituents and "actual
settler. " now it sometimes, happens, that the
signs for words of different sense are in phonog
raphy so nearly alike, that right word can only
he judged by the context. On this the reporter
did not probably write out his own report, but
left it to some careless clerk, and the consequence
was that Mr. Bright was astonished the next day
to sec his constituents referred to as " cattle steal
ers," in his speech. " Actual settlers" and
"cattle stealers " being represented by the sarnz
signs in phonographic writing.
A SMART PEOPLE.--Nit long ago, writes a cor
respondent of the Knickerbocker, an attorney
with considerab:e "swell," but not much brains,
came to C—, in Ohio, to " locate." One day
cvhen the poet office was full, waiting the distri
bution of the mail, a half- witted fellow, stepped
up to him in the crowd, and said " Mr. S—,
told you have come here to practice law."
Yes, I have." " Well, you will find it a first
rate location. I hadn't lived bore four months
before I was sued ten times." "Well, it seems
to me I could live here for years without being
sued at all." " I presume you could," said our
half-witted friend; "people hero aro pretty
darned smart ; they don't sue a fellow without
he's good for the costs."
Is Sweden it is the custom to take off the hat
when acknowledging a salute. King Oscar once
said to a gentleman who was commiserating him
for being obliged to keep hie hat off the whole
length of Drottinggatan in a violent snow storm.
"You are quiet right, it was exceedingly disa
greeable, and it could not help wishing that in
stead of being King of Sweden, I was the King
of Thibet, where, according to Hue, the polite
salution is simply to stick out to your tongue."
Two young Tishman happened to get into
an affray, in whieh one of them was knocked
dovn. His comrade ran up to him, and cried•
out, " •lounds, Dennis. if you be dead can't you

I'm not dead, but spaohless," said the other
