The mines work-. 1 by the Copper Mining Com
are about 1'2.0 miles from Fort Zama. A
very large capital is invested in this enter
pride, but we are inf , rmel that the ore is not
lone.' in regular and reliable veins, as the ores
are in ether parts of the Territory. The ore is
estimated is be worth per ton.

a Land-orae capital. Oar informant thinks that
rich:•-t gold places are to be found in the ter

ritual observation. The territory is, therefore,
z.•.:!eeqingly rich, not in large tracts of arable
Lnds, but in mineral treasures. Along the riv
er valleys, which are narrow, and around the
natural springs the fertility is great; but these
form a small portion of this territory.

song by the glowing accounts of its wealth,
finding no g,riretamcnt, and the whole region
swept by tribes of hostile Indians, either passed
through, with few exceptions, to California or
returned to Texas. The work in the mines is
mostly porformcd by Mexicans, at wages rang
ing from $1 to $l3 per mouth.
The people of this territory have petitioned
for the removal of the troops at Fort Buchanan,
and the raising of rangers in their stead, who
prove more efficient than the troops of a regular
garrison.
Our informant is convinced of the importance
of encouraging military colonization along the

only as a &fence against the Indians, bat to en
