A DOMESTIC STORY
[CON'PENUED.I
When he had reached his sixteenth year, his
father fell sick and died, leaving him a perma
nentincome of £5OO a year, along with a large
sum (f money uninvested. Although he was a
minor, the testator had perfect confidence, as
much in . his sense to prevent him being duped by
others, as in hie morality and religion to prevent
his duping himself, and took measures to ensure
to him the unrestricted command of this pro
perty,
The death of his father was an event that made
a deep and vivid impression upon him. He
- mourned not more the bereavement of an affec
tionate, devoted and dearly beloved parent, than
the loss of a talented, a constant, and confiden
tial friend, and the effect told woefully upon his
health. The fact, however, of his being able to
shift for himself brought him more in contact
with the world than heretofore, although still re
tirement was his choice. But as all his ideas of
employment or pleasure were connected with the
acquirement of knowledge, he found. the only
solace he. knew of in-study, and in the compa
nionship of his books; giving the time spared
from them to wandering from place to place •
alone, swiftly or lingering, as his whim suggest
ed, viewing spots which derived their charm to
him from literary or historical associations, such
as the- birthiPlac,3 .of Shakspeare, Stonehenge,
Runnymede, Newstead Abbey, or the likea.a-
When about seventeen, he bethought him cf
entering some university, not with any view to
academical honors, or even to the acquirement of
a profession, for he bad no ambition of any kind,
and his income was abundantly sufficient at once
to cover all his wants, and to leave ample over
plus for charity, which he practiced in ways as
quiet and upobtruaive,"as original and eccentric,
as all his other habits and pursuits. Moreover,
he sew it was of such a nature as to be perma
nently adequate to all his.limited de Tres.
He never thought of study as a labor, or the
way to knowledge as - an up-hill path ; and
.any
thing that seemed to threaten such a change in
idea he would avoid as likely to convert into a
pain the greatest and only perfect delight be was
cognizant of. The idea of a mental effort, of
taelling the intellect, of compelling the thoughts
to any anbjeUt that did not yield them perfect
pleasure, was abhorrent to him. Every pursuit
that can delight tho mind ho followed without
rule or method, or caring whether in it ho was.
thoroughly enecetefal, or moderately, or only a
tilde. The moment it ceased to gratify, he dis
missed it.—Painting, poetry, music, sculpture,
languages, philosophy, sciences, the drama, his
tory, to each did he more or less devote himself,
according to the pleasure it yielded. lie was, to
sum up its chisraoter, an intellectual epicure.
But on thinking over such a proceeding as
studying at is university, he reflected that, ac•
cording to the law of England, a few peculiari
ties in his mode of practicing the worship of our
CM131:11013 religion prevented him from learning
logic, mathematics, and the like, at the public
educational inetit utionc oiThis country—that, iu
consequence, the only resource left him was to
go over the borders to where, on a less enlight
ened principle, they consider learning a market
able.cotmiodity, and let any one have it win.; is
willing to pay for it, and where, as a result to be
empeoted from free competition in the article, it
is to be had both at the cheapest rate and of the
hest quality.
Warmly congratulating himself on this lucky
alternative, Basil bade adieu to his happy and
mind-illumined native land, and, lfdaking him
.self-to the benighted..Nerth, tutored his name as
a student at one of those tag-rag. and bobtail
iustiuticns, the Scotch universities ;--nay, after
a time, ho was not ashamed even to give a small
sum for that ridiculous distinction, a Scotch de
gree—a thing for which all southern scholars
show a becoming contempt by bit:1011g to their
B. A., A. M., or M. 11., the distinguished and
sounding syllables, " oxaN," or " CANTAB," 'BB
much to evinco the superior profundity of their
acquirements, and to intimate to the admiring
public that they were lawfully qualified to im
bibe the same by conscientiously breaking their
eggs at the big end, and by other observances
equally important and meritorious, as to let it bo
knoWn that they rank a little higher than the
mere Adam Smiths, and Watts, and Hunters, and
Broughams, of the North, with their simple
sneaking "LL. D.'s." They would flatter them
selves that they are a stop or two above that
. It may be stated that in f.feotland students do
not reside within the university they attend, but
are at liberty' to find their dinners, their
rooms, or their society-, when they can, how
they can, and where they can, as 4 Sulker says
his prayers ; food for the mind being all the
nourishment the colleges bargain ti supply. In
QOURCCIU4)I3OO, Basil, in his wanderings about the
city, having been struck with the breezy, se
questered quiet of the street alluded to, resolved
to establish biinself hero, and, having had hie
favorite books transmitted from England, con
veyed them to the house of a widow, by name
Mrs. Esterting, from whom he had hired apart
ments.
Here he went on as before, giving all his home
to study and the pursuits of taste. The classes he
attended as hie fancy suggested, eometimee far
overstretched the tasks there prescribed, some
times neglecting them altogether, as a more
pleasurable mental oeoupittion, haply, presented
itself. His abundant income he laid out on his
best friends, his books, and on coetiy furniture
and materiel for study. cr the exercise of taste.
But even these, profuse as was his expenditure
upon them ; left a considerable sum - plus, which
found its way from his pocket here, at the uni
versity, in manner analogous to what had been
usual about his home. Manys poor but talented
student struggling to rise in lifo by the steep
and thorny path of intellectual acquirement,
(and it is-a comforting thing to think there is a
country where learning's road from poverty to
independence and distinction, however diffieult
and exhausting it he of itself, as Uod knows it
is, still it is not blocked by any face w or k of man's
construction.!)—many a one in these circum
stances/Whose heart yecrnial for an additional
class fur which his time was ample, but his funds,
miserably as he etinted them, inadequate, would
be surprised sums day to receive, in t blank en
velope, authenticated papets constituting him a
member of that dabs, nor in his joyous confusion
could for a moment imagine they came frond that
(add, distant English lad, who sat always alone,
an4.set:ined so uninterested in anything.
H e courted no society among the students, was
always civil and kind when spoken to, but ap
peared to shun uny companionship. He_strove
for no premiums, sought no distinctions, nor did
he appear to feel either admiration, or eau for
ihesa leading spisita whose rival sisl,le s of talent
drew
. forth daily encomiums from the teachers
And bursts of noisy applause from-their assem
bled fellow pupils. All thee.% as well as the fac
tions, cliques and intrigues, political, academi
cal, and of other descriptione, that surrounded
bite, he eiewe.l with a calm, absent, indifference.
At college he remained during the winter ses•
sion. In the spring, when moot of the return to
their homes, to prepare themselves by solitary
study for the labors of the more advanced classes
of next winter, - het still continued in the same
