MARIVii-NE ESTERLING
The first soene of ours ti , r,y is laid in a cham

en ancient,' populous end wealthy city. This
street has a singularly retired, even deserted
look. The pavement is unmarked by footsteps,
and looks &pen and bleached—unsoiled since the
last rain. :About the nurbetones spring up tufts

with a porter's lodge attached, from a crowded
and busy thoroughfare, one of the chief
r_f the city.
Lae Louses are ail Lir:Ed, heavy, scrabre, old
fashioned edifices, with gardens in the rear.
They were formerly inhabited by the chief Mer
chants and profea danal men, but these have tai
grated now to L i Utte thu end of the town.
Their toli3witi have be.COtite the two and three
hundred a year people---retired tradesmen, mer
chants who have failed and live on the wreck of
their fortunes, miaisters of limited dissenting
eangregatiarra and the like, and many profea

aspect of the phut, with the fresh breezes from
the park and country beyond, as well 'as its

render it a astral,: Tet:itslt: - .lo c t for the numereutt

of Lard Byron. Beneath, there runs a lino of
small drawings of scenery, minutely and very

but in place grate you observe a curious or.

specimens of mineeals, a small brass model of a

American woods. The carpet, which has a yield

ness of exterior with those on the shelves, along
with newspapers, numbers of works in cameo
of publication, and of beit-niiiie and literary pe

old blue arid yellow are conspicuous. Large
