when this Suap is tried In place of other Soap. :id. Labor
in washing can be nearly dispensed with, as :the clothes
will require little if any rubbiug, thus avoiding their wear
on the wash-board. 4th. Bolling the clothes is unnecessary
when this,,Suap is used, and hard or salt water answers

To avoid the labor of rubbing the clothes, and the use of
lho wash4m.rd, the following directions should be followed
Per the washing of eighi or ten of a family, take ono

gallon of hot water; put the clothes into a tub containing
about tea gallons of war' water; pour in the dlerolved

boiling. Cold water may be need in place of hot, requiring
about double time in soaking.

Townsend's Trials and Tribulations.
Every one knows 11 ,. .w hard it is to give such a
description of a-oommon-place looking person as
will b 2 gcnefally recogniz•rd, but it would ap
poker that when a court had Townsend, the Can
adian outlaw (or his born image) before them,
they could not tell whetbor it Was Townsend or
not. Dante says in his Inferno :
4 •Seo Gguo lto
Thou art not double t!aa-,
Nor crAy °»e."
Townsend, it 'null appear, is half a dozen
prople, and then, like .luoitio, nobody at all.
This man, having been seiptittetl of the murder
of constable Richards, at Merrittsvillo, C": W.,
hao again hoeu pieced oa trial for the murder,
at Cayuga, of Mr. Nellec. Tn the first ease tho
jury could stet aeTee, in consecinence of the tes
timony arbliteed voiinz boon co contradictory
A Montreal paper malzeo tho fallowing rerearlz?i
on this curi:,no fer.tr:re of the case :
Townsend wen a porson vim had boon long in
the cone try, and was perfectly well known to
hundreds of persons, who mast hare Seen hire,
daily for long periods of time. his residence,
too, among these arse inter, wile not at a dis
tant, data between which and the present he
might have been subject to those changes which
come from the growth of years. From the mur
der to the trial, last year, no more than sonic
three years had elapsed. In many eases of crim
inal prosecution, there are reasons which satis
factorily account for contradictions. There are
biaesee of perry, or prejudices of some kind or
other, which sway ignorant witnesses and pre
vent the tribunals from getting at the truth.
This enure, if it operates at nil in the present
case, seems to be itlcely to exert only a mini
mum effect. It 11 true thee tit 'nether and sis
ter of TOWORNICI have been crammed in favor el
the prisoner. lint the great mass of the wit
nesses on hid side are open to no ar I - event ob
jection of partiality in Iris rayon morn than
chose who depose against him are Hoe!? to any
reasonable suspicion of hatred.
Under these circumstances, it may be wall not
only to excite our special wonder, but shako our
faith in all liumen testimony, when we
wit
noes after witness coming into the- box, to de
clare positively that the mon before them is
Townsend, the murderer of Nellee, only to be
followed by as many anti apparently as unini
peachahle wituessee, who declare just as posi
tively that ho is not Tovireend Still more erc•
traordinary is the circumf, tantiality with vehich
the different classes of witnesses corroborate
their opinion. her the Crown, they say that
they recognize the prieoner by a - soar er B 01111!
on hie face. l'or the defence, they ertsert that
Townsend had largo lump; upon the top of his
toes which showed throneh his boots, and that
the prisoner had tie such protuberances. The
Crown officees appear to have calculated upon
sustaining their case by two witnesses, father and
son, brnught from Chicago ; but these two com
pletely failed to identify the prisoner. Upon the
whole, the balenee of respectability in station
seems to bo with tho mote of witneseee for the
crown; hat as far as we eau judge from the
printed reports, there are men of good standing
to !le found utterly denying that the accused is
the man they knew as Townsend in 1854.
The moral conviction is chiefly against the
prisoner, from the fact of his failure to explain
his past life, which would at once clear up the
difficulty, and also from the fact that he has, in
conversations with witnesses who pent to visit
him, spoken of particular circumstances and
conversations known to those witnesses, in which
Townsend took part.

mass assumes a hollow ovoid form; he whirls
this round his bead, or, rather, in.a vertical cir

the ovoid into a cylinder with ro4tol ends ; he re
heats the glass two or three timep, during theF:,.;
processes, to maintain the proper consistency,
and, at length, the remote end of the hollow mass

fissure, and there is finally presented a flat piece
