Firc.—About oight o'clock on last Saturday eve ning, the citizens of Greonsburg were disturbed by the cry of fire and the ringing of bells. It was soon ascertained that the fire was in a room on the first floor of Kettoring's Hotel, occupied as a sleeping room by tho girls employed about the house. Tho smoke was dense and suffocating, and emanated from a large clothes press, which was locked, and con• tained the wearing apparel of the girls. It was soon extinguished, without any serious injury to the house. A quantity of female wearing apparel, in cluding hoops and other 'fixins, was destroyed. The two fire companies of Greensburg, with their appa ratus, wore soon on the ground, but their services were not called into requisition. Dastardly Outrage.—As the last train on the Penn sylvania Railroad was going by the old depot at Phil lipahurg, on. Thursday night, a bullet was tired into the last car by souse unknown person, which very nearly deprived two ladies, residing in Easton, Pa., of their lives. Mrs. J. Dawos, one of tho ladies who so narrowly oscapvd, says that the ballot passed pot more than a foot from whore sbe and the other lady, who was on the same seat, sat. Thorn were very few persons, besides the ladies, in the car at the time, and whether the rho! was it tended for them or was acid dental, is not yet known. The flash of the gun was seen by one cr two gentlemen, but it was so dark that they could not distinguish the person who tired the gun, or discover how Go was dressed. The bullet was found in tbo car on the following morning. No ono is able tit account for the affair.— Chronicl e. it a ccord:loco with a resolution adopted at the meeting of the Young Mon's Christian Association, which established a business Moll'B daily union prayer meeting at Lafayette Hall, the following eawinitttecs have bean appointed to make all I:loC3S s.,ry arrangements for the day opposite their names. Po tar. A Narrow Escape,—Dr. Gross, of East Liberty, met with an accident on Tuesday evening, and his escape from instant death was wonderful. Aa he was coming along the railroad trick at Wilkinsburg, in a buggy, he saw a freight train on the road. He wait ed until the train passed, and then drove on to the track, when an accommodation train from Johns. town came along. The engine struck his horse, separated him from the shafts of tbo buggy, and throw him a distance of ten yards. Dr. Gross was thrown out of the buggy, but was not seriously in jured. The horse was fatally injured, end the buggy was broken to pieces. Releaged.---Tho two gutu, otod bur glgn, Williams and Donaldson, who were arrested and committed to jail some ten days since, wore released by the Mayor. The wife or mistress of one of then' came here Irmo New York to procure their release, and as there was no charge against them, and no requisitions had been received from other cities, they were discharged on giving a promise to leave the city yesterday al ter noon, which they did. The Mayor induced them to have their pictures taken, which they acceded to, and they will be kept by the Mayor for future ref erence. The real names of these gentlemen have been ascertained to be Andrew Carroll and Charley Morgan. Family Jars.—Mary Ann Duffy and her husband John, who reside in M'Olurg's court on Fifth street, got a little whisky yesterday afternoon, and got into a little difficulty between themselves. A constable went to the house and found the 11 or torn up and the bed posts cut with a hatchet. Mary Ann was captured and taken to the watch house; when she got sober she was sent to jail for thirty days. was not to be found. Mary is very boisterous when in liquor, and yesterday afternoon the symmetrical appearance of her countenance was marred by a black eye which she had received in her conflict with her better half. Divorces.—Several applications for divorce have been made the present term of Court. Judge M'Cluro has expressed himself opposed to granting divorces, bat ho declared yesterday that he could not refuse those applications without disregarding both the law and the testimony. Stearns; Adeline Holmes, from Norval Holmes; Ann Cargo, from James Cargo; Susan Underwood, from Sharman Underwood ; Joseph Hoak, from Mary Honk ; Henry Brich man, from Elizabeth Brinkman. The New National Theatre.—Gov. Foster seems determined to have his Theatre opened, according to promise, on Saturday evening. A largo force of me chanics—upholsterers, carpenters, painters, gas lit ters, &c.,—are kept employed night and day, and the building is progressing rapidly towards completion. We presume the Governor will be able to open at the appointed time, though the arrangements may not he as complete as he could wish. WO understand that Mr. Hackett will be hero next week. Correction.—To alluding to a decision in the First Ward ROllOOl case yesterday, we made a trifling error in stating that the action of the hoard of Directors had been ell ztained. The fact is that the petition WAS distnissed on account of informality, the Court having no jurisdiction over it. The petition was signed by only one person, whereas the law requires six names to be attached. Mr. Collins requests us to state that he was the regularly nominated and regularly elected candidate of the Republican party. Man D.-olonfac T —On last Saturday week, John M'Dertuott, a deck hand on the steamer St. Louis, WELa drowned off the host at Martinsville, a point be tween this city and Wheeling. It is weeper to use ; one pound being equal to throe of common t..an Soap. 2.i. Half the time need only be occupied in cashing when this Soap is used in place of other Soap. ad. Labor in washing can be nearly dispensed with, as the clothes will require little if any rubbing, thus avoiding their wear on the wash-board. 4th. Boiling the clothes is unnecessary when this Soap is used, and hard or salt water answers equally as well as soft. bth. Printers, Machinists, Painters and others, find it far superior to other Soaps. It speedily re moves grease, tar, paint, printers' ink and dirt from the hands, leaving the akin soft, and free from chapping. To avoid the labor of rubbing the clothes, and the use of the wash-board, the following directions should be followed : For the washing of eight or ten of a family, take one pcund of Soap, cut it into shavings, and dissolve in one gallon of hot water; pot the clothes into a tub containing about ten gallons of warm water; pour in the dissolved Soap, and stir thoroughly. Let them soak twenty to thirty minutes, wring out, and rinse in warm water once, cold water twice. A very dirty wrist-baud, or seam, or grease sp:ds, may require a slight rubbing, but otherwise the clothes will come out clean and white, without rubbing or boiling. Cold water may be used in place of hot, requiring about double time in soaking. Observe our name on each bar.
