CIOIIDOIY, nticii itecretary. We make the -following extract from the able and moat eloquent defence of the United States Supreme Court, by Senator Benjamin, of Lotesantr, on March 11th, in reply to Sena tors Seward and Hamlin, who bas spoken dis paragingly of the court and particulary so of Chief Justice Taney, as also of President Buchanan. There are few men in the Senate or in the country possessing finer oratorical powers than Mr. Benjamin, and his defense of the Chief Justice, the President and the Court does honor both to his head and heart : Now, Mr. President, I come to another point in my argument, which I approach with extreme pain, with unfeigned regret. From my earliest childhood I have been taught to revere the judges of the highest oonet in the land as men selected to renclei justice between litigants, not more by reason of their eminent legal acquirements than because of a spotloEe purity of character, and undimmed lustre of reputation, which removed them far, far beyond even a doubt of their in tegrity. The long line of eminent judicial wor thies, which seemed to have culminated in a Marshall, has been continued in the person of. one upon whom the highest enlogium that can be pronounced is to say that he was eminently - wor: thy of being , the successor of that illustrious judge. I know not, Mr. President, whether you, as I, have had the good fortune to see that, magistrate in the administration of justice in his own circuit, or in the court sitting below us, - of which he is the honored chief. know not, sir; whether it has been your good fortune, as it has been mine, to hearth° expressions of affectionate itverenee with which ho is spoken of bythe peo ple amongst whom he has passed his pure, his simple, and his spotless life I know not, sir, whether you have-listened, as I have, with in terest to the expressions of respect and admira tion that comes frein the members of his bar in their familiar intercourse with each other--e-spon .ls.neous tributes, worth a thousand labored eulo gies,to his eminent sagacity, to his vast legal learning, to the Mild and serene dignity of his judicial deportment—above all, sir, above all, to the conscientious, earnest, almost painful sense of responsibility with which ho holds the scale of jtmtice in even and impartial hand between the litigants 'whose rights depend upon his judg ment. Mr. President, he is old, very old The in firmities of age have bowed bie venerable term. Earth has no further object of ambition for him ; arid wheu he shall sink into hie grave, after a long career of high office in our country, I trust that I do uot rudely or improperly invade the oatictity of private life in saying that be Will leave behind him, in the scanty heritage that sll be left fur hie tufa ly, the noblest evidence ihst ir - e died ar. 6, bed lived, a being h•.nerable re the 1.111 fr,,m which he ei , r:uig, and r.orthy the tree yen re which t.“. aspired. Tur ed, that) t.:.<3C,iik , 4/, but eompared upon tide floor to ,lie infamous Jettrer, by the Senator from Maine, [Mr. Hamlin j This man has been charged the-Senator from New York [Mr. S.,wat:if with a eorrupt coalition with the Chief M r.gletrate of the Union. Ile charges, in fact— not at Kaye in direct language, but partly by bold assertion and partly by inaiduous suggestions-- that, the Supreme Executive Magistrate of the lend, and the judge,:, of cur highest court, and the portico to the tired Scott case, got up a mock trial—that they were all in conur.en Cheat the country. lie represents the venerable Chief Magistrate of our country, whose reputa tion hitherto has been beyond reproach—ho rep rerients the venerable Chief Jbetice—as enacting a Solemn fare.e, in the face of the American peo ple, on the eastern portico of- this. Capitol ; cud he tells us, that oa the day whoa that great sea of upturned faces was hero presented, all looking on the tielerea' pageant thatives'pe.seing!befere them, the Chief Justice of Itio nation was whis pering into the ear of the President the tome of tide nefarious bargain—anti that, too, at the vary element when the formee was atiminiiiteriing and: the latter taking the oath of office, by which the high majesty of /leaven was invoked as: ikituen to the purity of his ieteetione iu . the administra tion of the veverhreent of hi a country I Mr. President, thrice accursed is that fell of party which desecrates the nobldst son timente of the human heart; and which, ;in the u •omplishment of its unholy purposes, hesitates at 1m reekless violence ,if assault on all that is 1 suerel by the wise and good. It was extremely difficult, for us all to sit hero and hear what was said, and observe the manner in it was said, autlrepress the utterar.eo of el the indignation that, boiled up within us. All I hie is charged by the Senator without the proof of a 'solitary fact, *lthoutthe'assertion even of a itut; on which to base the foul cliarge Luck ily, sir, luckily for us, these eminent nion, are too highly placed in the reverence, the estimation arid the regard 'of the American people,. have their bright esenteheonatijured. by such'attacks as theee. Mr. President, in olden times a viper gnawed a file. rit fiturlittg. 3ritituel M. Kier, John S. At the north, the State of New erlr had commenced the enlargement of the Eric canal, to admit boats of more than three times the capacity of the main line. The central road frets Albany to Buffalo was iu operation, and the road in the course of construction. At the eeete, the State of Maryland had commenced the the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad, to reach the trail:; of the great West. lt was necessary for Penosylvania to move, or see this vast trade dot pert from her forever. The Pennsylvania Canal. c.add not maintain a rivalry with these superior retiree, constructed and constructing north and south of her.
