Steam Fire Engine*.
Jast at this time, when the paid fire department
end steam engine system aro exciting a good deal of
attention all over the country, we think that the fol•
lowing exposition of the system pursued by toe Firo
Department of Cincinnati will be of general interest
to unr readers. It is from the pen of E H. Tatum,
Esq., a very efficient gentleman connected with the
Department there:
The steam engine department of Cincinnati con
sists of seven steam engines and three hand comp
nies, the whole being under the control of a chief and
two assistant engineers. In the centre of the city
stands the watch tower,' from which radiate four
districts. On the tower two men are stationed, who
stand regular watches night and day. The tower
being built upon the Mechanics' Institute, one of the
highest structures, its elevated position gives at once
a commanding and perfect visit of the entire o:ty.
On the southwest corner of the I-,tituto stands the
big bell,' weighing oval biz thousand pounds. It
is rung by means of a ponderous ir.•t, lever, to which
are mi.:fleeted iron reds runutog .r,tur the tower tmd
attaching with the clapper. Tne signals are inside
of the tenter, which are four large t,it.tiA glass ..ztlobttts,
placed et inter volt try• , throe fear. on stns rno , ‘
jading iron, ono-.::CL got , pipe; the glifc,.3 oc bells
are illuminated by moans of gas, and can ho plainly
distinguished from any of the several engine houses
in the oi y; thes i signals are raised from the summit
of the rower by%e pow= . •rful but simple windlass:—
one, two, three, or four being shown, as the case may
be; if the fire is in the first district, ono is put out ;
it in the second, Iwo, and so on.
"To each of the steam engine companies are eleven
a . on, consieting of one engineer, one fireman, three
drivers, three pipemen, and one watchman, headed
by a captain who is not a stationary man, and only
acts at and during a fire. Two hose reels also as
company each engine; in proceeding to a flee one of
the reeds takes the lead of the engine, and the, other
follows Immediately iu the rear. To the rear carriage
or reel is attached a small fuel wagon, bettor known
in the department as the " dinkey." Thu front reel
carries 1000, and the one behind 850 foot of three
inch india rubber hose. Very few fires occur where
it is iioceBssry to lay out the entire length, but it is
frequently expedient to conncet - tWo separate lines to
the engine. Fqu'r large sized draught horses are
used for motive power by the large machines, and
three for the small ones. The horses are harnessed
both night end day, and only require to be bridled
and bibbed to the engine and all is ready. Regular
watches are stood by the men at the different houses
during the day, and at night ono is appointed spe
cially. When the look-out on the tower espies a fire,
lie immediately sound , . the alarm, the watchman at
the houses respond, and the hones tire hitched up ;
so soon as the signals are hoisted the big bell rings
a second time, the district is communicated to thu
drivers, and they at a rapid pace proceed to the scone
of confiegration. If on the other hand the look out
receives the alarm from a small bell, ho rings omit',
thus osaking She alarm general, but does not hoist the
signals or ring up the second time uule 8 they sea
the fire or are assured that the flames are carSoefl,
which assurance is given by the watchman ad...1.1c0n:.
to the fa* igniting a brEtient red light, 0w...4 din
cernablo sight or day."
From the above an idea . aq to the efficien , y ; , t
paid Aro pepartmeut may be obtained, and no one co .
help but admit that it has many advantages over th , _
volunteer system. Cincinnati is far ahead of us all
with her steam engines, and we hope the day
far distant when the pay system, at least, if cot thz
steam engines, will be inaugurated in Pittsburgh.

In a civil nastardy suit, Lewis Sweeney plead
guilty, and was sentenced to pay thirty dollars to
the mother, and sixty-two cents weekly for the sup
port of the child, for five years.
The ease of George Shaw, the kidnapper, tree
called up, but was continued until the Juno term by
mutual conceal cf the attorneys. The reason for the
continuance was a statement by the prisoner's connect
that material witnesses were absent.
Judge M'Clure promised a decision in the infernal
machine case to-day.
David E. and D. W. Mitchell, indicted for
and battery, on cath of Jesse Young, were tried and
the jury returned a verdict of acquittal. a
The ease of Commonwealth vs. James Blakely, in
dictment, obtaining money under false p•etonses, on
oath of Michael Drummond, was continued until the
June term. The District Attorney testified that one
of the most material witnesses for the Commonwealth
was absent. Mr. Blakely renewed his hail for ep•

As the business for the term was concluded, the
Jury was then discharged. The argument list will
be taken up to-day; . and disposed of as rapidly as
possible.
Identified.—The carpet sack which we noticed
few days since as having bosu found in the posses..
aim) of a vagrant named Thomas Madison, found in
the Fifth Ward Mirka 1E1G114.(3, was yesterday Mem i•
fled by Mr. Samuel T. Garrison as his property. He
arrived in the city from Sew;chley on Thursday
night, and intending to go to East Liberty, loft hi
carpet sack at the office of the Pennsylvania FUN
road. On his return soon afterwards the sack was
missing. Re went to East Liberty, and seeing the
notice in the " Post," came to town yesterday morn.
lug, went to the Mayor's office, and made an informa
tion against Madison for larceny. The zonlents of
the carpet sack are valued at twauty.•five dollars. A
commitment was lodged against Madison till the nest
term of Court. Thomas is not a good hider, or he
might easily have 'act off with •the carpet sack, as
the owner said he never expected to see it again, and
did not intend making search for it.
Duet.—Yesterday, we, in common with every one
else whose business calls them out of doors, were
annoyed by the " balmy breezes" which sweep over
the city and obsured everything in a heavy cloud of
dust. This, however, being ono of the accompani
ments of spring, we will bn compelled to endure it
with as good as grace as possible, though it is by no
moons pleasant to have the eyes made a receptacle
for street sweepings, to say nothing of having one's
good clothes spoiled with the dust. The wind, to ,
was disposed to 'be mischievous with the ladies,
especially those who attempt to be dignified ; as it
is almost impossible for them, in this age of ezpan
Bien, to make much headway against a wind.
Showers, such as we had on Sunday rtpoated two or
three times daily, would lay the dust, and maize
out door exercise much pleasanter.
Theatre.—The Theatre was not well pa+roulned last
evening, possibly because the kind of attraction pre
sented did not suit the frequenters of that establiEh
merit. We hope, b iwever, to see 'a
better attendance
to-night, when Mr. J. G. Henley, a good actor, and,
by the way, a groat favorite, takes a benefit. The bill
offered is an excellent ono. Bulwer's sterilise comedy
of " Money " will be played, in which Mr. Hanley
plays Alfred Evelyn. Mies Kimberly recites Drake'r
Address to the American Flag tho favorite daneeuee,
lilies Turnbull, has returned from the East, and will
dance au Irish Lilt; Mesta Lewis wilt also dance,
and the evening's entertainment will conclude with a
new drama, entitled "Gale Breearly," in which Mr.
Hanley takes the leading part. We wish him a good
Louse and a profitable one.
Faust doeictsos.—A careful correspondent writes
us the particulars of a painful accident which oc
curred at Now Texas, In this couuty, on Thursday
evening last
Mies Susan Davidson had rented one of hor farms
to a Mr. Fry, who we; moving to it on that day, and
in the evening elm went over to see them. On leav
ing, about 7 o'clock. in the evening, she happened
to fall over a grain cradle that F - 115 loft rather in
the path, and received a very severe out in the thigh,
which blod so profusely that she died on Friday
forenoon, about 11 o'clock. H. R. Tomer, J. P.,
held an inquest, but nothing was elicited to criminate
soy person, and the verdict delivered corrobora,nd
her own statement, viz: that it was Providential.
Rescuing a Prieonsr.—On Saturday an ellioer
named Matthew Keep arreeted a titan named Patrick
Hopkins fora violation of the liquor law. Two of
his friends, James Moran and J. J. Moran, interfered
and succeeded in getting Hopkins away from the
tolicer. Information was made by Keep before Al
derman Lewis, and on Sunday night the two Murano
were arrested, and, after an investigation, oommitted
fcr trial. Hopkins woe muted again yesterday
ranoing and taken before Judge M'Ciure when he
plead guilty to two indictments for selling liquor
without license. He was fined ten dollars and costs
in each ease.
Assault and Battery.—The market uonetable,
Siinpsun Moore, yestorday made inforpsstion against
a man named John Schooley for assault and battery,
Schooley was driving a wagon along the street which
had no number on it. In pursuance of his duty he
spoke to him about it, but Schooley gave him no sat
isfaction. Moore followed him to the stable, and on
oocosting him about it, Schooley fed on to him, and
abused him, gouging desa from his face, &e. Schen.
ley was bold to bail for hie appearance at the June
term of Court. •
Bald to Bail.—Honry Halover, residing on Wylie
street, WEL3 held to ball by Alderman Rogers yester
day for assault and battery.
The same °floor also admitted to bail Wm. Camp.
bell, one of the parties supposed to be implioated in
the robbery. of Peter Smith some two weeks since.
Joseph Cunningham, of Rose township, was held
to hail by Alderman Lewis on a charge of assault
and battery preferred by a neighbor of his named
Knox.
Rtixocial.—Our readers will perceive by reference
to our advertising coulumns that Dr. Samuel Smith,
ono of the most experienced and careful prescription
druggists in our city, has removed from the corner of
Fifth and Smithfield streets to No. 147 Smithfield
street, one door from the corner of Sixth, where ho

b.evreivible.—A boy was taken to the watch house
on Saturday night who has been apprenticed to a
shoemaker named Warrington, who states that the
boy behaved very badly, and that he could do noth

in the habit of "licking him for nothing," and said
that he abusod the other boys in the shop, and that
on Saturday night he had a boy strippod and tied up

worthy reciptont of the honor, and will no doubt
wear it bravely.
Alasoor'e Offied.—Yesterday morals% there were but
