Court of Quarter Sessions.
Before Hon. Win. B M'Cluro, Presidont Judge,
and Gabriel Adams and John E. Parke, Associate
Judges
Robert Turley was indicted for the larceny of an
overcoat from John S. Blair, and plead guilty. Re•
mended for sentence.
Charles Coatey, the young man who purloined
g,oeds from his employers, Messrs. Flees J Schmidt,
was tried, found guilty, and sentenced to three
mouths' imprisonment in the county jail.
Jacob Thoobald sued Smith McFall for assault and
battery. The verdict of the jury was not guilty, and
prosecutor to pay the costs.
In the afternoon, there being no jury cases for
trial, the Court proceeded to sentence the convicted
prisonere now in jail.
George Cooley, Patrick Mullen and David Porter
were sentenced to eight years each in the Peniten
tiary on two charges, one of highway robbery and one
of grand larceny. They were not sentenced on the
petty larceny cases.
Robert M'Creery, the young -man v. ho knocked
down end robbed Mr. J. G. Mason. ace Sunday,
some two months since, was merit over for six years.
Thomas Lucas, a colored man, convicted of com
mitting a rape upon a colored girl twelve years of
ago, was sent to the penitentiary for three years.
Robert Turley, John Turley, and James Gordon
were sentenced to three years each for the robbery
of the Craig jewelry, and two years each for stealing
Mr. Blair's overooar,--malting five years for each.
William Anderson alias Samuel Platt, who was
convicted of grand larceny in robbing Mr. Braynian,
of Kentucky, of $473 in gold, was sent to the peni
tentiary for throe
Jonkin Edwards was slat. sentenced to three yearn
for grand larceny in stealing braes and pieces of ma
chinery from steam ongines.
Harry Denison, the boy convicted of assault and
battery with intent to kill, on Richard Braxton, was
let off with six mouths in the county jail iu oonstd•
eration of his youth.
Charley Bothwell, who stole a bucket and several
other articles from Mr. M'Dermot, got up a pretty
good story, though rather improbable, and tried to
get off; but tho Court was not to be humbugged, and
he was sent over the water for three years.
Tlie Avery College
'rho closing exercises of this school for the hinter
term were concluded yest6rday. Most of the exami
nations were in tho higher branches, consisting of
Algebra, Geometry, Natural Philosophy, Lugie, his
tory and Composition. Most of the students evi.
deuced a close application to their studies, and many
showed a proficiency far beyond their years. Some
of the compositions read yesterday wore very fine
specimens. Thero is, at present, no class in the dead
languages, and bnt one engaged in the study of Ger.
man.
We cannot too strongly recommend this institution
to the notice of the too much neglected race for
whose benefit it was established. The cost of tuition
is but a trifle, some $l2 pju. annum, and the neces
sary of.p:mses of the student about £lOO for the yea..
The facilities for education here are very great, the
teachers are amply qualified to impart instruction,
and the appliances aro perfect. Indeed, we know of
no better or morn economical method of education.
The institution is designed to furnish facilities for
the acquisition of all the branches of knowledge
usually pursued in high schools and colleges. While
it offers superior advantages for obtaining a good
English education, it has also a regular oolleg.ate
classical course of study, and a college charter. It
has a female department, to which much care is de ,
voted, and the course of study in which is - designt I
to give as high an education as is found in the best
ladies' seminaries. The discipline of the school le
mild and paternal, yet firm end strict, and, although
the institution is not under the control of any re
ligioas denomination, yet its charter provides that all
its officers shall be professors of Christianity. The
moral atmosphere of the studuut is therefore a good
One.

a largely increased attendance, may be realized.
Country Items.
Two men, named James Williams and Augustus
Cline, escaped from the Jeffersen county jail, at
Steubenville, on Wednesday night about nine o'clock.
They succeeded in prying away a large stone near
their window, with a poker, thus making an aperture
large enough to allow them to snake their exit. Thoy
had been imprisoned on a charge of burglary, at,d
stated that they were citizens of New Alb.sny, In
diana. A reward of SAO has been offered by Sbor:ff
Blinn for their apprehension.
Two men, named John Bowers and James Dixon,
were arrested at Noir Lisbon, Ohio, recently, on a
charge of passing counterfeit money,

disease of the heart. lie had bean slightly unwell.

The residence of Dr. B. F. Spelman, of Ravenna,
Ohio, took fire on Thursday morning, about one
o'clock, and was considarably injured by fire and
water before the flames were checked. The fire is
supposed to ba . ve arisen from the carelessness of
servant in leaving a candle is her room, while she
went to spend the night with an acquaintance.

Mr. Peter Kennedy, an old and well known aiti•
z3n of Washington, was severely'injured on last Sat.
turday afternoon, near Cherry Valley, by bein,:;
thrown from his sulky. His horse became frightened
at some objeet and mode a sudden jump, throwing
him, with considerable force upon his head. Three
of his ribs were broaen, and be was otherwise mush
injured, but he is now doing wail.
An Owner Wanted.—Officer Daye, of tho night
police, found a man lying in the Fifth Ward Market
House, about twelve o'clock on Thursday night.
Mr. Daye had considerable difficulty in arresting
him, as ha succeeded in jumping out of his coat,
and it was only with the assistance of another watch
man that he was captured. Re had under his head
a large black leather carpet sack, which, on examina
tion at the Mayor's office, was supposed to be stolen.
It contained a green coat with a velvet collar, a quan
tity of linen, a Concordance to the Scriptures, and a
letter directed to S. T. Garrison, signed by Gen. Wm.
Robinson, dated August 19, 1352, notifying Garrison
of his appointment as ticket agent at Sewiokleyville,
on the Pittsburgh, Fort Wayne end Chicago Rail
road. The man gave his name as Thomas Madison.
He was committed for thirty days as a vagrant.
District Court.—ln the District Court, yesterday,
the case of the Pittsburgh and Connelsville Railroad
Company against S,intiel Livingston, which has oo
copied throe days, was decided by a verdict in favor
ul pla.ntiffs for $9,682. The suit was brought fur
the recovery of the balance due on a subscription
made by S. t P. Livingstoh, el which firm the de
fendant is the surcivit.g partner, for one hundred
and fifty shares of the stuck et the company, on
which but a small amount had been paid. James
S. Craft and George P. llii[Lilt._!: were counsel foil
plaintiffs, and R. C. U. dpioul and Thomas Williams
for defendants.
Sharp Practice. —A countryman, bound for Mad
ison, lowa, went on board the Nathaniel Holmes, on
Thursday evening, and was making his horses coat.

versation, and finally persuaded our friend to give
nim money to go up into the elerk's office to pay his
passage. Sinop then, nothing has been heard of the
confidence man or the cash. The police are on the

alicraa. —Mr. Robert Reed, near Kittanning, aged
seven ty.five years, ten years totally blind from catar
act, was lately restored by a now method of ope-
rating—a method that causes bat slight pain or risk
o the eye; likewise William Richardson, of blan
ches er, coach trimmer; also Mr. John Alexander,
on Fountain streeot, Pittsburgh, by Dr. Stand, No.
277 Penn street.
Paralpia.—Mr. George Bailey, an uld resident of
this city, a plumber, residing on Fourth street, was
suddenly attacked by paralysis, in a severe stroke by
which ho was felled to the floor, and rendered in
sensible, while standing at the counter of the Citizens'
Bank, on Thursday afternoon. He was taken home
in a carriage, physicians were called in, and he has
now partially recovered from the effects of the stroke
Two suite were instituted yesterday, before Alder• ,
man Lewis, against Simpeon, Moore. Margaret Hop
kins charges him with assault and battery, and de
clares that he threatened to shoot her. John Moore
says Moore arrested him, took him to the watch
house, and looked him up without any reason. Simp
eon was held to bail for his appearance.
Dr. William M. Kern, one of our most popular
physicians, has removed his office from Smithfield
street to No. 229 Penn street, one doer from Irwin.
Margaret llopkina was held to bail by Aldermen
Lewis, yesterday, for a violation of the liquor law.
