Commonwealth vs. William Anderson 011 . 08 Sawl.
Platt ; indictment larceny, on oath of John Brayinau.
About the first of September, Brayman and Ander , on
were both boarding at a private house on Fourth
street. Brayluan was a resident of Louisville, Ey ,
and was on a visit to this oily for the behetit of his
health. Sometime during the first week of Sep tom .
her, Braymau was robbed of $473 to gold, in s2o.i,
$lOB, ssa, Suspicion fell upon Anderson, from
the tact of his having disappeared shortly after the
robbery. Anderson was not arrested tient f.. ur
or five weeks since, in Louisville. Tue oosilei,ee
against Anderson was conclusive, and the jai) found
a verdict of guilty.
Commonwealth vs. Robert J. Hamilton; indict
ment assault and battery with intent to cumuli( .;
rape, on oath of Hannah Quaid, a young married
woman. Tue proseeutrix, with her hubband, resides
in Baldwin township, on a farm belonging to deter

witted on the night of the 29th of October, in th
absence of Mr. Quaill. Verdict of the jury—guilt) oI
assault and battery.
Some other trifling asmault and battery ease,:
also disposed of.
Rather Romantic. --A young woman, who had
grown weary of the monotony of thi; spring weather,
donned the accoutrements of a male biped on Wodne,
day evening, and with a companion in her own proper
attire, went to the Theatre, and took a seat in the
boxes. The bearing of the couple was the Bubj.,q
of general remark in the house, but increased when,
between the acts, she went to the saloon, drank freoly,
smoked cigars, swore like a trooper, ac., winding up
by getting quite happy, and indulging in a good deal
of noise. The eyes of the p dice officers had boon
upon her during the evenicg, and on her becoming
disorderly, she was arrested and taken to the Mayor
office, where her sex was discovered. She was kept
in the watch house all night. Yesterday morniii ,
the Mayor read her a severe lecture on her very lido
proper conduct, and warned her that if she was again
hound in wale apparel she would be sent to jail 1 , 0
disorderly conduct. She was then discharged. She
is a character well known to the police.
Benefit of Mr. Dubois.—The many friends of tilt
gentleman will have an opportunity of evincing th.o ,
appreciation of him by giving him a bumper on the
occasion of his benefit this evening. We have ti. -
quentiy exproßsed our opinion of his capabiii:;e9,
and we wi I not repeat them now. Suffice it to
that his place will not be supplied soot:. The hi::
offered is a very good one, ..tuns.sting of the
of the "inconstant," in which Mr. Dubois eusttiii
the character of Young .Mirabei, and the batiom,i
drama of The Pilot, in which he will persoto ,
Long Tom Coffin. We heartily wish him a d I
benefit.
v,t itized Sheet three, the attentiou of
our readers to the advertisement of Messrs. Moor
head dr. Co. They manufacture American plain d
corrugated galvanized sheet iron they are al
agents for Wood's Patent Imitation Russia Sheet
Iron. This galvanized iron is a valuable article t -d
roofing houses. At the recent fire in the Filth Ward,
a building which was in imminent danger, was only
saved from having the roof covered with this anti,
rial. Those about to build will do well to ealt ano
examine the article.
Futul Accident.—On Tuesday morning, a youns
man, named OR 8. Bishop, residing in Brookville,
Jefferson county, was killed in the following manner
He wain coming down Itedbank creak on a raft n.
lumber. Near the little town of New Bealtells!,
there is a bridge, with a pier in the middle of th.
creek ; the raft was thrown against the pier, an
broken to pieces; some heavy pieces of lumber lel ,
over on to Mr. Bishop, crushing him beneath then
weight. He died in about fifteen minutes after it..
accident.
Railroad Accident.—An acoident occurred to th,
express train on the Pittsburgh, Columbus and Clo
ciunati Railroad, a few evenings since. Tho train
came in contact with a rock which had slipped no
the track at Hanover Cut, eight wiles from Newatk
throwing the cars oft the track. None of the pa:
seugers were injured, but the engineer, Jesse Lost
gander, wis considerably sprained and bruised. IL.
engine was badly crippled, and another was procult..:
before the train could proceed.
Dietrict Court.—The business which has been
transacted in the District Court recently has been
only trifling importance. On Wednesday a verdi. ,
was rendered in favor of Thomas M. Wolf for slni!
damages against Alderman William Wilson, of
Fifth ward. It seems that the Alderman had con,
mined Wolf for contempt of court, he having refuse,
to give his name in a case before the Alderman
Wulf sued him for false imprisonment, and the 'squire
was beaten.
A How in the County Jail.—A day or two Bi
man confined in the county jail, named Simon Brady,
bad some difficulty with another prisoner named Jo:.
Mackerel, when a quarrel ensued, in which iM , ickei.
an 1 Jack Kinsler, it turnkey, fell upon Brady and
heat him shamefully. Brady made itiformation
against them yesterday before the Mayor, and true
bills were found against both of them.
The extensive catalogue of hooks to be sold to
morrow evening, at Davis' new Auction Building,
Fifth street, presents an unusually attractive collet--
Lb n of new and old works from valuable private
libraries. The starting character of this catalogue
should secure it the attention of all careful readers
roofers. The books are new arranged for exawina
!ion ant tatalogues ready.
Maple Sugar.—The fine weather of the past [et,
lays has sot the sugar water to flowing, and we shall
0011 have an abundance of msp.o sugar and mo
lasses. It is thought the product this season is ill r•ot
be near 8o great as lass as the 88/18013 will be short
and prices coneideraoly lower The supply, how
over, owing to the hard times, will bo equal to the
demand. A good article will meet with a randy s;ilr
at paying prices in this city.
Off tho Track.—On Wednesday evening a freighi
train going West on the Pittsburgh, Fort Wayne at d
Chicago Railroad wa+ thrown off the track when
near Remington. The night mail and passenger
train due here at nine o'clock, was delayed about two
hours in consequence, not being able to get pad!.
No one was injured.
Court of Quarter Sentaone—The present session
this court will be a short one—the Ctl.Sod are very tow,
and of little importance. A large proportion of the
bills sent to the Grand Jury have been ignored, and
the complainants charged with the costs. I this
were done more frequently, our criminal records
would not he burdened with such an immense num
ber of petty cases.
The Aqueduct.—The report of the Aqueduct Corn
mittee in relaticn to the arch at the Allegheny of
of the Aqueduct, having been referred back to them
by Councils, they have ordered a brick arch to be
erected under the stone one, which would probably
fall when the water is let in. The contract for build
ing the arch has been awarded to Messrs. Blackstock
& Rauch.
Poet Office Appoitstments.—A new Post Office has
been eetapliehed at Milltgen's Mills, Westmoreland
county, with R. T. Reed ne Postmaster.
John Bower, formerly Postmaster at Bower Hill,
Washington county, has resigned, and David Devorn
is appointed to take his place.
Country Fire Coutpaniee.—Two fire companies
have been organized by the young men of Greens
burg recently. We understand they intend supply
ing themselves with hooks and ladders. The citizens
of Kittanning have resolved to purchase a fire en
gine, and a committee has been sent east to buy one.
Fire Arrival of Spring Good. at Carnayhatee, Al

A Diatinguiahed fiejnysa in Pitl6buigit.—Yester
day man called on Mayor Weaver, and informed
hint that Thema. Allsop, ti,e person who, was ring.
leader in the ph t by which the life of Louis Napoleon
was attempted last January, was it, this city, and ad•
vised the Mayor to arrest hitt. The person, who
seemed positive of what b.• stated, declared that Mr.
Allsop had been in the ci'y eer eral days, and was
residing in the house tit a tried in the Eighth ward.
~.,The Mayor declared he h.,d no authority whatever
tor interfering in the matter, and declined having
anything to do with it. We believe his Honor acted
quite wisely in this matter. It may be a fact, but we
are inclined to regard the mutter as it hoax.
Offiee.—Ve,4erditv there was nothing of
an unusual character before Mayor Weaver. In the
morning there woto seven common arise 9 un hand ;

Weekly Review of Pittsburgh markets
PITTASOFIGH, March 25, 1858
Th • opening of the navigation and the enntintied
tine weather of the past week, have given quite on
impetus to trade. The resumption is now complete,
and in every department there is a satisfactory
amount of activity. The steamers which leave this
port are generally departing with good loads, while
the cargoes from below are quite heavy. We hut.°
every reason to believe that the most sanguine ant - Hs
pations of a prosperous spring business will be fully
realized.
