The sale of tickets for the grand concert to morrow evening commenced yesterday morning, and judging from the rapidity with which they were disposed of, we can safely state that the City Hall will be crowded, by ono of the largest and most fashionable audiences that has ever been assembled in our city on a similar occasion. And the eminent artistes announced for the occasion could not fail to attract a large and bril liant audience. In no portion of the world (the musical world at least) is the name of Thalberg un known, or his merits as a pianist unacknowledged. As a performer on the piano, he excels all living art ists. The delicacy of his touch and swiftness of his movements often leads those who are not watching him Closely to believe that there are two performers instead of one. It seems almost impossible that one individual can produce so many and such a variety of notes in a short space of time. Vieaxtemps is, without exception;the greatest vio linist in the world. In Europe ho has reached the climax of fame. He is above all rivalry, and nh liv. ing performer would think of equaling, much less excelling him. He combines all tho good qualities of the great players, together with the profoundest science and the most finished style. This celebrated artist made a tour of the United States some fifteen years since. It is wild that unth his style and exe cution have been meet: improv:-.1 during the interim. The artists who are to o , sigt Blos rs. Thalberg and Viouxtemps bring with them most flattering reputa tions, and aro ranked among the first performers of the country. M'llo Carinli, the Prima Donna of the company, from the Italian Opera House, but more recently from the Academy of Music, in New York, is a splendid soprano. M. Ernest Perring, the young English tenor, from Her Majesty's Theatre, in Lou don, and who was so enthusiastically received by the amateurs of the East, is said to have a charming voice. Miss Annie Kemp, the celebrated young American contralto, who Was engaged at the Now York Academy of Music expressly for the produation of English operas, is also a moat delightful ballad Binger, and wherever she has sang there has been but one voice concerning her abilities—that of universal admiration. Indeed, Such a combination of talent as we have just enumerated is a rare event in musical history, and one we will seldom, if ever, have the opportunity of hearing again. The programme consists of selec tions from the most celebrated English and Italian operas, both vocal and instrumental. There is some thing for every taste. Those who prefer the more difficult and Intricate passages can be gratified in lis tening to Thalberg, Vieustomps and Carioli ; while those who fancy the simpler ballads in our own lan• guage, will listen with pleasure to Miss Kemp and Mr. Perrin. The price of admission, taking into consideration all these potent attractions, has been fixed at a.mod crate scale, which will give satisfaction to all classes. We heard a number of persons, yesterday, complain ing of the high price of reserved seats; but when they reflect on the heavy expenses this company are obliged to incur, they must admit that the charge is as reasonable as we could expect. During yesterday morning some five hundred reserved seats were dis posed of. We presume but few morn will be taken, as after so many of the choice seats have bean se lected, there is not much preference among the re mainder. To morrow morning the sale of one dollar tickets will commence. Court of quarter Beadtous Before Hon. Wm. B. M'Clure, President Judge, and Gabriel Adams and John B. Parke, Associate Judges. Court mot at ten o'clock yesterday morning, and the first case called was that of the Commonwealth vs. William Livingston. The indictment was for as sault and battery, on oath of Id. B. Hartzell. This difficulty seems to hava grown out of a conflict of juriqiiction ; Livingston was borough constable of Birmingham, and Hartzell collecting constable of the same borough. Some difficulty occurred between the two about a prisoner, in the course of which Livings ton struck Hartzell with a cane—whersenon, the lat ter, fooling agrioved, entered suit. After a hearing of the case, the Court charged the jury that the de fondant had committed an assault and battery in striking llartaell, yet at the same time be we+ in the discharge of his duty. The jury found a verdict of L guilty, and Livingston was fined one dollar and costs. In this case, WO presume, the issue was more of offended dignity than of personal violence. Like our own police officers, the Birmingham officers will sometimes come in contact in discharge of their du ties. John Anderson, Indicted for assault and battery, on oath of Samuel B. Young, plead guilty and was sentenced to pay a find of five defiers and the costs of prosecution. The case of tile Cowroonsealtla vs. James Ross, who is indicted for perjury, was called up, but by the representation of the defendant's counsel, Mr. Sproul, that a material witness for his client was absent, be ing a member of the Legislature, and unable to at tend at the present term of Court, the case was con. tinned till the June term. Benjamin Kuckly, indicted for assault and battery, on oath of Sarah Jane Williams and Martha Ann 801 l was nest tried. He plead guilty, and asked for mercy from the Ccart, stating that ho was drunk when he committed the offence charged. Tho indiet noent charges him with entering a house of ill-fam 3, in which these women lived, knocking ono of them down, and boating both of them unmercifully. Judge M'Cluro hero took occasion to make some re marks relative to the rights of these poor-creaturcF„ who are so much abused, and the cowardice of a matt who could strike one of them. He Collia see no pal liation of the offense of the prisoner. Ho was =- fenced to an imprisonment of three months for each offense, and obliged to give bail to keep the peace toward the prosecutors. Our Bemis Table We have received from the publisburF, Messrs. T. 13. Peterson 44 Co., Philadelphia, a new work just issued by them, entitled "Sartaroo ; A Talc of Nor. way." It is from the pen of James A. Maitland, and as far as we can judge from a cursory examination, a very pleasant work. It is dedicated to Washington Irving, who wrote the following letter to the author concerning it: SUNNYSIDE, IBVIIiqTON, Nov. 1,1857. MY DEAR FRIEND: AB4Orditli to promise I have read " Sartaroe," 12 . 9:iti-now will give you my opinion of the book in a word. It is highly creditable to your genius—it is excellent : all in all, the best novel issued from the American press for some years past. It must certainly meet with success. I will do my best for you. You ought to clear at least $4,000 to $5,000 by it. I have written to Murray, of London, my old publisher, as I told you I would, and I have advised him to reprint the book there, and have as eared him that he ought to send the author £2OO sterling for the privilege of printing the work in England. * You may use this when the book cones out. With tho greatest esteem, I am your friend, WASHINGTON IRVINE The work can be procured at Hunt & Miner's, Ma sonic Hall, Fifth street, who are agents for Appleton' publications in this city. Theatre—The Farewell Benefit of the Star Sistere. —The successful engagement of the star sisters, Messrs. Lucille and Helen, terminates this evening with their farewell benefit. Their performances her' have drawn larger honses than have attended any performers in the Theatre for several years, and their numerous admirers will be gratified to know that the " Three Fast Men," the successful piece of the season, and the " Hot Corn Girl," will be performed togotLer this evening, thus affording to both the young ladie. a good opportunity for the display of the great versa tile powers in song, dance and acting. We do but re.ecto the wishes of the play-going public in wish. ing them a crowded house. The Meeting this Evening.—A meeting of the Dem ocrats ~ f this city and county who are opposed to tho admission of Kansas under the Lecomptou Constitu tion, has been called for this evening at the Cit; Hall. The meeting will be addressed by Col. John ,W. Forney and Will A. Stokes, Esq. A good deal of 'feeling has been manifested on the subject, and we anticipate a large turn-out on tho occasion. Col. Forney has many friends and admirers in this city, and, if we may be allowed to-judge from the demon strations made at his lecture on Monday evening, there are many who side with him in his political views. Pittaburghera Leduring Abroad.—Our District At torney, F. H. Collier, Esq., was to deliver a lecture before the good citizens of Sharpsburgh lest evening, on " Mental Cultivation." As we ones before an nounced, John M. Kirkpitrick delivers a lecture this evening in Rochester. The address by this gentle man before the Literary Societies of Wilkinsburg, Academy on Monday evening, was attended by a large auditory. We bad not the pleasure of hearing him, bat were informed that it was ono of his most brilliant efforts. Vieuxtempa and Thatberg's Concert Book, contain ing the most authentic and interesting biographical sketehes of Thalberg, Vieuxtemps and Carl Formes, the Rules of Modern Piano Playing by Thalberg; the words, with correct translation, of all the songs sung in these concerts; also the music, arranged for the piano forte; will be for sale on the evening of the concert at the door.
