An Alderman Sued for Damages.—Some ten days
siotic Alderman Lowis committed to jail as a va
grant a man named Cornelius O'Brien, and his son,
abcut fif.een years old, to the House of Refuge. Yes
terday the Alderman was notified that preliminary
measures had been taken for commencing a civil suit
for damages. O'Brien says the proceedings against
him were harsh and illegal, and that he has not only
been insulted, but his son has been taken away from
him. We learn that the boy was taken to the office
of the magistrate, intoxicated, and that he, ku ming
that his father and mother were in jail, and that he
could not be properly taken care of at home if dig.
charged, committed him to the House of Refuge.

A descent was made upon the house of Henry Stet.
ler, in McKean county, last week, resulting in the
arrest of Stotler and his son, and the seizure of about
$6,000 in counterfeit coin, a large amount of metal
for manufacturing bogus money, plaster parts for
making moulds, chemicals, recipes, and directions for
pursuing the work—in fact everything necessary for
conducting a bogus mint on an extensive scale. The
Stet Jere wore committed to the McKean county jail
to answer a charge of making and uttering counter.
feit money.
A young woman named Mary Denerman, residing
near Tyrone City, Blair county, was engaged in boil
ing soap last week, when her clothes accidentally
took fire, and before it could be extinguished, she was
so severely burned that she survived her injuries
only a few hours.
A sou of John Hornish, near Ho!lidaysburg, about
nine or ten years of age, met with an accident on
Wednesday last which came very near resulting in
his death. He was playing in the hay mow, when
Le slipped and fell, head foremost, upon the barn
floor, a distance of ten or fifteen feet, producing a
severe concussion of the brain. Ho is now recov
ering.
governor Packer has appointed Hon. Thomas H.
Burrower, of Lancaster, Hon. George Darsie, of Alla
gheriy, and Hon. J. Y. James, of Warren, commis
sioners to investigate the affair' , of the Lancaster
Bank, under the act passed recently by the Legisla
taro.
A man who has bean traveling in this State, im
posing upon people by a gutta poreha pen swindle,
was arrostad and lodged in jail at Carlisle last week.
Ho will be tried shortly, and will in all probability
get a term iu tho penitentiary.
On Monday of last week a woman named Delt,
who resi les a few miles from Reading, fell from a
wagun loaded with furniture, and in endeavoring to
ease her fall, extended her hands, breaking both
arms just above the wrists.
The consolidation of the Lebanon and Philadel
phia and Reading Railroads, which has been in con-
templation tor some time past, was confirmed last
week by the unanimous action of the latter company.
The arragemont is to go into effect on the first otJuly
next.
A very singular and fatal accident occurred at Ty
rone Forge, in Blair county, on last Friday. A man
named Black was engaged in chopping wood, when
the axe glanced and struck him in the leg, near the
knee, with such force Is to actually sever the limb
from his b,dy. He was taken up immediately, and
carried to a house in the neighborhood. Every effort
was made by his comrades to staunch the bleeding,
but without success. The unfortunate man bled to
death in fifteen minutes after the occurrence of the
accident.
Prof. Wamefink's; Concert.
The concert of Prof, Wawalink was a brilliant
affair, the hall being crowded with a largo and hob
ionab,e audience. The pupils executed their parts
admirably, and among those worthy of special notice
we might allude to the song of "Those Bright Black
Eyes," by Mrs. Scully; a duett, "Let us Dance on
the Sand," by Mrs. Burke and Miss Cochran;
" Annie o' the Banks o' Dee," by Miss Dennieton,
and Comin' thro' the Rye," by Miss M'Clurkan.
Several other solos and duetts were well executed,
and the two choruses, " Land of the Trumpet" and
"Awake, the Night," by the whole company, were
most admirably sung. During the performance some
of the singers were enthusiastically encored, and sev
eral baguets were thrown on the stage. The pianos
or the occasion were furnished by Mr. John H. Mel
lor. There was but one drawback to the unalloyed
enjoyment of this concert—the extreme length of the
programme, a fault which has been very common
this winter. It is tedious to listen to music, no mat
ter how good, for a long time, especially when the
pieces are encored and the performers repeat them.
It is possible to get too much of a good thing. Per
sons will get tired listening, but at the same time
prefer to remain rather than make an exhibition of
themselves by retiring before the conclusion of the
entertainment.
A Necessary Measure.—Mayor Stuckrath has ap
pointed a night police for Allegheny city, consisting
of four men, Sylvester Tyler, Washington Swain,
David M'Koivy and Samuel Long, who are to patrol
the city from nine o'clock at night until six in the
morning. This Is a good measure, and the men who
have been selected for the duty are in every way
e, impotent. A night mania has long been needed in
our sister city, and the recent burglaries and out
rages committed at night, have awakened the Mayor
to the necessity of protection to the citizens. Four
men, however, are not enough to guard the city, but
the good people of Allegheny must be thankful for
those, and look for an increase hereafter.
Advertising.—Now, that the spring is opening, is
the proper time to advertise business of every kind.
No man having goods, wares or merchandize of any
description, should fail to let the people know what
he has to dispose of; and every one in want of anything
should make it :tnown through the medium of the
press. It is much more economical than to waste
time, patience and shoe leather in running after , cus
tomer, or in waiting for them. Advertise liberally,
"its bound to pay."
We have received from Messrs. Hunt cb Miner, a
very neat little instrument in the shape of a pencil
sharpener. It is a patent by J. W. Strange /6 Co.,
of Bangor, Me. and is called the "Double-Cone Pen
cil Sharpener." There are two distinct operations in
its use, one of them cutting away the wood; the other
pointing the lead; thus avoiding the liability of the
lead to break off, as in the old instrument. Call and
get one.
Ladies Tract Society.—The Ladies Tract Society
of Allegheny, met a few evening since and elected
the following °Mars for the ensuing year: President
Mrs. F. R. Brnnot. Vice President—Miss M. Her•
ron. Secretary—Mrs. R. S. Hays. Treasurer—Mrs.
Dr. Trevor. Managers—Mrs. Breading, Patterson,
Myler, Oudry, M. McKnight, Boyd, Gibson, Forrest;
Misses Fleming, Blaokstock, Whitten, Warner, Wot
ring, Tassey and Patterson.
The New National Theatre in Odd Fellows' Hall is
being pushed forward very rapidly. A large force of
carpenters is at work on the building, and in the
course of a few weeks the wood work will be ready
for the painters. Governor Foster returned to the
city from Cincinnati on Monday, and is superintend
ing the work. Ho will open about the first of May,
with an excellent stock company.
Horticultural Society.-LTho Horticultural Society
met yesterday, when a resolution was adopted in
favor of holding the fall exhibition of the Society in
connection with the Fair of the Allegheny County
Agricultural Society. The Horticultural Society will
also hold an exhibition in June. No other business
uf importance was transacted.
False Pretences.—A carpenter on board the Empire
City, named Israel Pancoast, was arrested and taken
before Alderman Lewis on Tuesday, charged by
Michael Portzer with obtaining board from him by
false representations. The matter was compromised
by Pancoast paying the bill.
&nt to the Penitentiary.—Daniel Denny, sentenced
o years imprisonment for manslaughter, and
Vllliam Maxwell alias Smith, sentenced to one year's
, t , nfinement for larceny, were taken to the Peniten.
isry on Tuesday, by Sheriff Pattersofi.
Aesatz/t and Battery.—Thomas Kearney charged
Lawrence Gorman with assault and battery, yesterday
morning, before Alderman Lewis. Gorman was (w
-rested and held.to bail for his appearance at Court.
Monongahela Valley Bank.
We understand that tho Commissioners of the
Monongahela Valley Bank, to be located at M'Kees
port, are nt w in this city, and have their Stock book
at the roums of the Board of Trade, whore they will
143 pleased to receive subscriptions for stock from our
citizens. We hope . they will not be disappointed,
but that they will receive a liberal subscription in
this city. The proximity of the institution to our
city will enable city stockholders to watch over their
interests, as well as if it was located in our midst.
We have no doubt that if properly conducted it will
be as profitable as any of our city banks. The vast
amount of coal business carried on in that neighbor
hood, together with the general trade of the valley,
we think will bo sufficient to employ the means of
the bank to advantage. The books will be open to
day, Wednesday and Thursday. •

Swindling.—Yesterday morning Messrs. Gross .4
Gardiner, of Rochester, entrusted fifty dollars, en
closed in a letter, with a man named Purcell to bring
to Pittsburgh and deliver to a firm in this city. He
left on the morning train. Shortly after the train
had passed Mr. Grose ascertained that Purcell had
quarreled with his wife the evening before and sepa
rated from her, expressing a determination of not re
turning. Mr. G. accordingly got on to a freight
train and came to this city. On calling on the gen
tlemen to whtm he had sent the money, he was in
formed they had n t received it. Having obtained
a police officer, they proceeded to hunt Purcell, and
shortly afterwards found him at a drinking house on
Fifth street; when asked for the money, he said his
hat had blown off while riding on the cars, and the
letter dropped out. He was arrested and taken to
the Mayor's office, when the money was found se
creted on his person. Purcell begged very hard to
be let off; and Mr. Gross, not wishing to prosecute
him, he was released.
The Star Siotere.—Last evening, the Star Sisters
appeared in two pieces, which they have not played
here before. Miss Lucille appeared in the excellent
comedy of "Satan in Paris," in which she sustained
six different characters, while Miss Helen appeared
as Katy, the Hot Corn Girl, in English's drama of
the " Hot Corn Girl." Daring the piece she will
sing the Bong, " Hot Corn," which has been so much
admired for ite pathos and sweetness. They were
both well received in these pieces. The same bill
will be repeated this evening; to morrow the pro
gramme will be changed; and Saturday night closes
the engagement.
The Lecture Last Evening.—Mr. Chandler's lecture
last evening was attended by a large and intelligent
audience, the capacious room being nearly filled.
We should have been pleased to give a brief synopsis
of the lecture.but did not get there in time to get
the thread of it. It was, however, a production
worthy of its talented author, and all who heard it
agree in pronouncing it among the beat lectures of
the season.
Mayor's Office.—At the Mayor's office yesterday
morning there were five common cases on hand. The
Mayor, having no further fear of email pox in jail,
committed the batch to jail for various terms.
Lecture.—lt will be perceived that John W. For
ney, Esq., editor of the Philadelphia " Press," will
deliver a lecture on next Monday evening, in Lafay
ette HalL S abjeet—" American Statesmen."
Renovation.—A number of prisoners were busily
engaged yesterday in cleansing thejaiL They gave
it a thorough scrubbing. Jailor Philips is deter
mined to keep his quarters in a habitable condition.
Big Egge.—John Connelly, of Allegheny City, has
in his possession a couple of Cochin China hen eggs
of unusual dimensions. They look more like goose
than hen eggs.
A little boy named Berger, three years old, was,run
over by a carriage on Washington street, on Tuesday
evening. He was not severely injured.
We call attention to the advertisement of the con
cart of Thalberg and Vieuxtemps, in another column.
CITRATE OF MAGNESIA
A mild and efficient purgative, pleasant to:-the
sate, and mild in its operation. Always on hand
rash, by CHAS. H. SUPER,
Corner of Penn and Bt. Clair streets,
V- a YOU ARE FCH., the probability is that the
root of your suffering is in the stomach. From a weak
stomach proceeds Dyspepsia, Ague, Languor, Nausea, and a
legion of other tormenting diseases. Indigestion produces
thin blood, and therefore destroys the strength and vigor of
the entire system. To restore the tone of the stomach, and
enable it to throw off and dismiss forever all these trouble
some and dangerous complaints, nothing is necessary but a

riILIE CHEMICAL OLIVE ELUSIVE- A SOAP, manufactured by B. C. & J. el. lawyer, re
recelVoe the preference over all other kinds ever offered fur
tacitly use.
Its advantages over other Soaps are :—Lst. It is cteaper
to use, one pound being equal to three of common rosin
Soap. 2d. Half the time need only be occupied in washing
when this Soap is used in place of other Soap. ad. Labor
in washing can be nearly dispensed with, as the clothes
will require little If any rubbing, thus avoiding their wear
on the wash-beard. 4th. Moiling the clothes is unnecessary
when this Soap is used, and hard or salt water answers
equally as well as soft. Gth. Printers, Machinists, Painters
and omens, find it far superior to other Soaps. It speedily re
[Roves grease, tar, paint, printers' ink and dirt from the
hands, leaving the skin Bolt, and free from chapping.
To avoid the labor of rubbing the clothes, and the DSO of
the wash.boird, the following directions should be followed :
For the washing of eight or ten of a family, take one
pound of Soup, cut it into shaviegs, and dissolve in one
ga , ton of hot water; put the clothes into a tub containing
altour. ten gallons of warm water; pour in the abissolved
and stir thoroughly. Let Mein soak twenty to thirty
inmates, wring out, and rinse in warm water once, cold
ester twice. A chry dirty wrisvband, or seam, or grease
sp. ts, may require a slight rubbing, but otherwise the
clothes will come out clean and white, without rubbing or
Cold water may be used in place of hot, requiring
about double time in soaking.

DR, SANFORD'S INVIGORATOR,
IS REQUIRED TO CURE ANY ONE
troubled with Liver Complaints, unites the mad dos•
perate of cases, when the mond bottle will, with stews •
single failure, restore the patient to health and vigor. We
wish to call the attention of all to these facto, that the In
vigorator Is compounded by a physician who has seed ft b
his practice for the past twenty years with a snots= almost
credulous, and that it is entirely vegetable. being ootaptoxl
wholly of gams.
Some idea of the strength of these gams may be &mod
when it is known one bottle of the Invigorator contains as
much strength as one hundred dates of Calomel without an 'Y
of its deleterious effects.
We know there is nothing now before the American pub •
lic, prepared with each skill by a acientillo man, partleularly
for diseases of the Liver, as Dr. &Word's In , or
Liver Remedy. It has attained a reputation B#3COna to - no
other articlvin the world, simply because it rest on its own
merit. To convince all by trial that it la all its - proprietors
claim it to be, if any of our readers are suffering from each
diseases as are described in Dr. Sanford's advertisement, we
know of know remedy that will eo surely cute them as the
Invigorator.
The invigorator care' sick Headache. Take one or,two
teaspoonfuls at each attack and it will soon disappear. Fox
an overloaded stomach, or when food rises or scars, take the
Invigorator after eating, and it will not prove d eeable
or oppress: ve. For Heartburn, Palpitation or t
Breathing, take a teaspoonful once or twice daily. For LOU
of Appetite, Languor or Listlessness, the medicine is invalu
able. It will restore the appetite and make the food digest
well. Nightmare, take a teaspoonful on retiring, apd the
demons of dream-land will all be fairies. After eating a
hearty dinner, take a dose of Invigorator and It will relieve
all oppression or fullness. 'I ne Invigorator is a Liver Ream
dy of unequaled virtue, acting directly on that organ, cur
lug Dyspepsia, Jaundice, Billions Attacks, Dysentery, Piles,
Worms, and all Female Obstructions , for which it Lae no
equal.
We know there iu nothing now beforis the American pub•
tic prepared with such skill by a scientific man, particular
ly for diseases of the Liver, as I r. timford'a Invigorator, or
Liver Remedy. It has attained a' reputation second to no
other article In the word, simply because it rests on itiown
merit. To convince all by trial that it is all its pmpristors
claim it to be, if any of our readers are Buffering from such
diseases as are described in Dr. Sanford', advertisement, wi
know of no remedy that will so surely cure them ea tb,.
Invigorator.
There tuts lately been brought to our-.notice a medicine
that seems to possess wonderful, curative and healing pro
perties in diseases of the Liver, Stomach and Digestive Or
gans. It came to us with so many testimonials in Its favor
that we have noted its meats in some of the worst cases of
continual dibility, caused by deranged liver, and In every
instance the effect was to relieve or give a permanent cure,
Dr. Banford's Invigorator, or Liver Remedy is what we re•
fer to. We always have been credulous about cures by pat
ent medicines, but we are com mced that this meditine, for
family use, is not overrated by the heat of recommeadatiota
it has. Our advice is, for all troubled with Indigestion ; re
billy or Bowel Complaint, to get a bottle and try It; our
weld for it, relief will be experienced.
8L1e81140.9 ro it LiVALIDS who nee Dr. eldiatord'a Lavisor•
ator, for it will relieve them of their pains as soon as it is
taken into their stomach. Pain and misery cannot exist
where the Invigorator La used, for it will as surely drive them
away, as daylight will banish darkness of this there cants,
uo doubt to tit we who try it, for it ca rries conviction with
every dose taken. Another evidence is the thousands of
certificates from those who use it of have been cured by it,
Try one bottle, it it does not benefit, then we are mistaken.
