I=l NO. 37 DIAMOND ALLEY, C. a CITENIMRF LOCAL _AFFAIRS. A Good ➢love On Saturday afternoon about three o'clock, imme diately after the alarm of fire, as Mayor Weaver was passing down Smithfield street, he was met by sev eral persons, who informed him that the members of the Neptune fire company were drawing their reel up street on - the pavement, upsetting children, „frightening females, dc., regardless of everything in their way. After proceeding on his way a short dis tance, ho met them and told them thiY would be ar rested if they did not leave the side-walk, when they lett the pavement and took the street. No sooner, however, had the Mayor passed on, than they again drew their apparatus on the Bide-walk, and pro °ceded as before. The Mayor then repaired to the office, and despatched a posse of officers after them, who arrested five, George Camp, William Jones, James Scahill, John Burkson, Wm. Fowler. On arriving at the Watch House, Camp took to his heels, and taking the back way, made good his es cape. The Mayor read the young men a severe lec ture on their recklessness, and stated that he would hereafter arrest and impose a fine upon all persons running a hose, reel, or engine upon the side-walk. The party war th e n fined $5 each, but in constdera tiuu of this being the liraa portion of the fine was remitted, and they were discharged on the pay- Client of $3 each. IVo ere glad to tee the Mayer so decided in this matter. Our firemen have long been in the habit of using the pavement or street indis criminately, as suited their convenience, and we conceive it is time that they should be stopped. This is the only city in which such liberties would be tol erated, and we cannot see why we should prove an exception to the general rule. We think this exam ple will have a good effect, especially if properly sec onded by the "law and order" members of the different tire companies. We understand that, on the adoption of a new constitution by the "Du quesne," recently, a clause was adopted, making any member going on the side walk with a "machine," liable to expulsion. We hope this precedent may be followed by the other companies. School Books In Friday's "Post" an article appeared with the above caption, reflecting somewhat on the Central Board, for adopting a series of writing books pub lished in this city, by ono of our own citizens, Mr. O. SchwThman. One of the great evils heretofore complained of was a want of uniformity its the text books used in tho Ward Schools. This evil no longer exists. The Central Board has -adopted a uniform series of books, in the different studies, which aro now in use in all the Ward Schools of the city. Those books are supplied to pupils in the Common Schools as chonp as like books are in any other city. It is folly to talk of a monopoly in school books, or of "patronage to favored individuz.ls." The business is open to al! who wish to engage in it, and a fair competition in trade is secured, as it is the interest of all booksellers to keep on hand the books used in ~or schools. We should suppo , m it would be the in terekt of Mr. Schuchman to sell -his writing books at a raw to secure their general adoption in West ern Pennsylvania, for it is a fact easily demon strated, that the profits, from the sale, only, in Pitts burgh, would not justify their future publication. Bence, of necessity, those copy-hooks must be sold as low as others can be. We know the faet, they are. That the Central Board have done right, by the adoption of a Pittsburgh book, which is fully equal in sty to and fiish to any other similar publication published elsewhere, will not be called in question, except by some who believe that all enterprises of this rind kindred character ought to bo confined to Eastern cities. For our part, we hope to see many other school districts encourage Mr. Schuchman in this useful enterprise, by adopting his excellent writing hooks, and wherever a Pittsburgh book can be had, just as good and cheap as an Eastern one, it ought to be adopted and put into our Schools, and the Central Board cannot be charged with either encouraging monopolies, or extending its patron age to favored individuals. With regard to Mr. Singerly, it is useless to say anything hero. lie is as well ..ad as favorably known to our citizens as "Tax Payer." Theatre—The Faat looal play of the "Three Fast Men" still draws like hot cakes. It has done what no other play yet has in Pittsburgh, drawn crowded houses six successive nights, and on two cccasions the Theatre was uncomfortably filled. The cry is, "still they come;" and judging from present. indications, the piece will draw for a week longer. It is, however, only announced for this and to-morrow evenings, to afford all an opportunity of seeing it who have not yet seen it. As a vehicle for a hearty laugh and an evening's innocent amuse ment, nothing can be better than the "Fast Men," and we would advise it as a sovereign remedy for every kind of ennui. New songs and connnndrums aro announced for to-night. St«bhing Affair.--An information was made be fore Mayor Weaver on Saturday against some per. eon unsnown, by Michael Schrum. The informs Lion sets forth that as Schrem, who besides near Ml nersville was driving to town in his milk wagon a man to him unknown, climbed into his wagon and took from him a jug of cream, worth about $l. Ho remonstrated with him, but he presist_•d in keeping it. In trying to,preserve his property a struggle en sued in which the stranger drew a knife and inflicted a wound in the hip of Schrum. The wound is not dangerous. iyor's Office.—On Saturday morning quite a motley crew woo in attendance at the Mayor's recep tion. They were of both sexes, charged some with drunkoness, some with vagrancy, and some with both numbering in all fourteen. Of these seven were sent to the hill to share the hospitality of Jailor Philips, and seven were discharged. A greater proportion of these cases deserved a term in jail, but as the May or is not positive that the jail is free from small pox, ho chooses the least of the two evils, and discharges t he prisoners when it will not interfere with the ends justice. On Sunday morning seventeen cases d re disposed of by his honor Mayor Weaver. New Counterfeit.—The Philadelphia papers state that a new counterfeit is in circulation, on the State Bank of Ohio, Preblo County Branch, Eaton. It is a dangerous, because a very well executed note, be ing calculated to deceive the most cautious. We cannot describe the particlar points in which it dif fers from the genuine notes, as we have not yet seen one, but we have understood that some of these note., have been offered in this city, and it would be well to avoid taking notes of this description without first carefully examining them. Judge McClure« Courts.—The business in these courts for the present term is about concluded. A day or two mole will conclude the argument list, and the court will then adjourn. Next Monday, being the fourth Monday of March, the Criminal Court will again sit. The liminess prepared for this Court so iar, is quite limited, most of the prisoners now in jail being confined for trivial offences. The infernal machine case, and the conspiracy case of Raglan, Shaw dr, Co. will excite some interest; these, we be lieve, are the most important cases to be tried. County Bonds.—ln accordance with the decision ~ f the Supreme C)urt, that the County of Allegheny has the privilege of exchanging the stock which it holds in the Pennsylvania Railroad for the bonds of the county, issued to that company, the :county Commissioners have drawn up a power of attorney and forwarded it to Messrs. Scull, Camblos do Co. of Philadelphia, appointed them their bankers. They are authorized to transfer the stock hold by them in the road to such holders of the county bonds as are willing to accept the stock at its par value, giving the bonds in exchange. Appoiatimit.—T. C. Carothers, Esq. has recently beoo appointed Superintendent of Common Schools far Beaver County. Mr. C. has the reputation of icing n gentleman who has had practical experieno as a teacher and in every way qualified for the dis aharge of the duties of his office. We hope that he may be eminently successful in his efforts to pr. mote the cauEe of education. He talles the place of Mr. A very, resigned. Daily Evening Prayer Meetioy.—A committee ap pointed by the Young Mans' Christian Association, have resolved upon holding a nighVi prayer meeting at the Bethel Church, on Water street, from seven to eight o'clock. Persons of every denomination are invited to attend. -Pagging Counterfeit Money.—On Saturday, Messrs. Klee & Kaufman, proprieters of a Dry Good and Var iety Store in Allegheny, made information against William Warner, charging him with passing a count arfeit $lO bill at their store. He was arrested and taken before Mayor Stnckrat,h who, after an exam ination, corn mitted him to jail, to answer at the next term of court. Small Pos.—Wo are informed that the symptoms f Jack Kunzlor the turnkey and Shaw, do not indi ate that ,their disease is small pox. Shaw was ouch better on Saturday; he says he only had a bil ouS attack. We hope this is true, and that this dis ease may not obtain a footing in this city. tit, Pour !louse.—An old man named Fair man, and his wife, who is said to boa hundred years Id, wore sent to the City Farm on Saturday, by the Board ut Guardians. They are both very old and decrepid, and will in ail probability, end their days 113 paupers. nlilla Way A horse attached to a light wagon ran away on Saturday, on Gran , Strect. At the e , )rner of Second ho was stopped by the upsetting of the wagon, breaking it to pieces. 'lin horse, we under stand, had a leg broken. Fire.—On Sntarday afternoon between two and three o'clock, a fire originated in the Variety Works of Jones, Atterbury d; Co. on the cornerof Grant and Water Streets. It was however, soon extinguished without material injury. District Cow-I.—Nothing of public importance has transpired in the District Court for some days. The Court was in session for a short time on Saturday, hut the business was of minor importance. Court of G'onznion Pleae.—This court was in ses ion on Saturday, engaged on the argument list. Boy's Raglane and Sack Overcoats.—Gent's Frock and Sack Overcoats, Raglans, etc., and a full stock of Winter Gloves, Gauntlets, Shawls and Scarfs, for Men and Boys, still on hand at Carnaghan's, Federal Street, Allegheny. Cash Buyers will find the prices an induccuAnt. • Sap- IF YOU ARE S OK, the probability is that the root of your suffering is iu the stomach.
