GIITENDORP LOCAL AFFAIRS. Report of the Visiting Committee of the Mercy Hospital. The undersigned committee, appointed at the instance of the Managers of the Mercy Hos pital, to visit and examine that institution, take ploa , ure in expressing to its patrons, their ap proval of its general management, and their high opinion of its usefulness to the community. A thorough examination of The building and grounds satisfies us that its arrangements and situation are admirable for the purposes in tended, and that perfect order and neatness pre vail throughout its interior. The statistics, which are embodied in the general report, ex plain the extent of its operations, showing: Total number or patients admitted from January, 1857,u February, 1858 232 Patients discharged cured during the same period 192 232 Died during rue period 20 ; Remaining in llotpital Fob. 14, 1358..... 20 J Of the IliroVt: there a el, 1101.1•payitig or char ity patients 172 232 P-atients who paid about oue third fens... 20 Patients who paid full tee , 40 j The number of non-paying or charity pa tients, as compared with the whole number rel ceived and treated during the year, establishes the character of this institution, as . truly a house of mercy to those who have enjoyed its benefits. 'Referring to the statement, included in the report, of the receipts and disbursements of money during the period named, one fact ar rested our attention most forcibly. It is the average cost of treatment of each patient per week or per annum, which is so small compared with the benefits received, of medical treatment, kind and constant nursing, food, medicines, washing, &c., and which so clearly shows the great claims this institution has upon the chari table and benevolent with whose contributions to it so much good can be done at so small a cost The self-sacrificing spirit of devotion of the good Sisters iu charge, to tfie care and attention of the sick, without fee or reward, save that which they hope for iu eternity—while it is but a part of the purpose of a life, withdrawn from the world, and devoted to charity, may be cited as one of the principal reasons why this institu tion may be conducted so economically. The medical attendance furnished the patients of this institution is certainly equal in point of talent and experience to any that could be pro rated anyivhere, ani a high meed of praise is due to Drs. Bruce, Pollock and Shenck for their valuable and gratuitous aid to the Hos pital. The resident medical student, J. Camp bell Sitorl,, has charge of the patients during the absence of the attending physician, and through out the entire establishment the regulations and facilities to furnish the sick and suffering poor with proper treatment, nursing and care are complete. For those who wish to avail themselves, when sick, of the advantages hero offered, and who are able to pay for the same, ample accommoda tions may be had in the Hospital, with private apartments, and separate attendance, at a mod erate charge. Believing that this and all kindred institutions have their origin in that spirit of charity which the holy teachings of religion inspire, and in the exercise of which all are brought together in at least one good work, we most cordially commend the Mercy Hospital to the benevolent and char itable, as one of the most useful and meritorious institutions in our midst. JOHN S. COSGRAVE, WM. H. SMITH, JOHN P. PEARS, N. GRATTAN MURPH'I Row In a Beer flail A fracas took place in a beer hall on Wednesday nigat, during which a young man named William O'Rourk attempted to stab a German named George Donning. The parties were in the beer hall together, and, from some cause, quarrelled and began to scuffle, when O'Rourk drew a knife and struck repeatedly at Denning, but did not succeed in wounding him. A constable was passing, who arrested O'Rourk and took him before Alderman Donaldson. Denning re fused to make any charge, having been intimidated, apparently, by the threats made by O'Rourk, who was fined five dollars for disorderly conduct, and in default committed ten days to jail. While in the Al derman's office the prisoner made an attempt to escape through the store in front, which was Ow trated. On leaving the office ho again made an at , tempt to evade the penalty by taking to his heels, and was nearly successful, the German who was as saulted aiding him by seizing the officer, and endeav oring to hold him. He was secured, however, and safely lodged in jail. Theatrical Benefit of Lucille Great preparations, we bear, are making to give Miss Lucille, whose name is up for the bvening, a benefit, and independent of her own claims, the "bill of fare" is uncommonly rich for the night. The ever attractive " Three Fast Men " presents ad• ditionol attractions in songs and dances; and to add to the Minstrel scene, Miss Lucille has offered as a prize a silver cup to the author of the boat original conundrum, to be decided by a competent committee of gentlemen appointed for the occasion. Undoubt edly this offer will bring out much that is witty and laughable, which will add much to the scene, that of itself is always laughable. Miss Helen appears in two now songs and dances, and the laughter-provok ing "Jerry" is sure to keep the people in a roar. As to-night for Lucille's benefit and to-morrow night for Helen's completes the time allotted for the Fast Men, we hope all will improve the occasion to give her a "bumper." Penn Street Crossed at Last.—The readers of news papers have for a long time been obliged to peruse numerous articles on the " Penn street Crossing." But this vexed question is now settled, for the pres ent at least. A temporary track was' completed across Penn street on Wednesday, and on the same night a train of cars, drawn by the locomotive Resolute," under the management of Mr. James Semple, ran over. Yesterday the passenger train crossed when necessary. No freight trains have as yet made the transit. As soon as ground thaws out sufficiently the present track will be rem,,ved, and a more permanent one will be laid. This will be done in the course of a month. We observe by the Armstrong " Democrat" that the citizens of Kittanning, having become alarmed by the numerous fires which have taken place in their tuwn and vicinity of late, have concluded to purchase a fire engine, and have appropriated $2,000 tor that purpose. A committee has been appointed visit Philadelphia for the purchase of one. Had (Lis measure been adopted a few months since, the (Jaen House of Armstrong county, which was de. strayed by fire a few days since, might have been saved. Perhapd our fire department would sell them au engine. Propositions have already been made to :ell our steam fire engine. Lecture by Hon. Joseph B. Chandler.—This distin guished gentleman will lecture in the basement of Paul's Cathedral on Wednesday evening, March 17th, (SL Patrick's Day.) From the high character of Mr. Chandler, we deem it unnecessary to urge upon our citizens the propriety of attending his lea• Lure. Besides, the proceeds ale for the benefit of the ,i.phans, and we hope the lecture will be well at. tended. Price of tickets, twenty-five cents—to be bad at Quigley's, Fifth street, and at the door. Fancy Dreg* Party.—All who desire to enjoy themselves in good old fashioned style, by indulging In " the mazes of the dance," would do well to pay a visit to Neville Hall this evening. Professor Cowper ives one of his popular fancy dress balls. From what we hear among our young acquaintances, we anticipate a fine affair. Those gatherings are usually well attended, and those who go, always come away well satisfied with the evening's amusement. Go, at all events, and see the fantastic dresses. Visit to the House of Refuge.—Miss Kimberly, with the star sisters, Misses Lucille and Helen, ac compapied by the Mayor of the city, visited the House of Refuge yesterday afternoon, and after pass ing throne' the different departments, were present during the examination of the inmates of the insti tution in their various branches of instruction. The ceremony was very impressive and interesting. Aeaigaee Appointed.—We neglected to notice yes terday morning that an assignee had been appointed for the Blakely estate in place of John J. Mitchel, re.. igned. The appointment was made by Judge M'Clure, who, after consideration, rejected both Mr. Cummins and M'Masters, the proposed assignees, and appointed William Campbell, Esq. He is a gen tleman who will endeavor to render satisfaction to all parties interested in the settlement of the business. Committed.—May3r Stuckrath yesterday corn. mined Edward Connor, who was arrested on a charge of riot, on a bail piece. He was arrested as one of the parties who beat Patrick Dolan, so unmercifully a few weeks since in Allegheny, and bail had been entered for his appearance at CJurt. Yesterday his county withdrew the bail ; he was given up and committed to jail. The last of those delighful and popular concerts given in the First Associated Reformed Church, Sixth street, for the benefit of its Sabbath School, is an nounced for this evening. Our renders may spend an exceedingly pleasant and profitable evening lie teeing to ihe beautiful music and elegant literary performances prepared for the occasion. Salem of Stocks.—The following sales of stocks were made last evening at the Merchants' Exchange, by Messrs. Austin Loomis dt Co.. 10 shares Iron City Bank 20 Mechanics' Bank 30 " do do 40 " Birmingham, East Birmingham and bo-th ritt•bargh Gas Co.— 16 00 The Duquesne Greys will hold a meeting at their armory, on Fourth street, this evening. . ~eGa- .., :,{ ~. inquest on the- Body of Stewart.--On Wednesday morning a Coroner'. jury was called for the purpose of holding an inquest on the body of Munroe Stew art. They proceeded to the Hospital, and after de. liberating for a short time, returned a verdict in ao oordance with the facts already stated. This inquest was held in pursuance of a law which makes it im perative on the Coroner t.) bold an inquest on the dead body of every pri.oner dying in prison ; and though Stewart was nut strictly in prison, be wee in custody of the authorities. A foolish report pre vailed on Wednesday that Stewart had been "spirited away " from the Infirmary, and the body of a de ceased patient substituted for his ; which, of course, was unfounded. Postal Arrangements.—A new post office has been established at Hill, Merear county, with El. Grundy as postmaster; on the route from Warren, Ohio, to Mercer. Indian Run, Meroer county, William James Johnson, postmaster ; to receive special supplies from Mercer. At Fountaindale, Adams county, D. Henry Reimann has been appointed postmaster, vice Wm. Rogers, resigned. Mayor's o.ifice.--Yesterday morning Mayor Weaver had five cases of the usual character before him, solo, - , of them-pretty hard once. Four of the party were delivered into the care of Jailor Phillips for safe keeping, while the other paid his fine and was dis charged. Small Pox.—We believe no new cases of small pox have as yet made their appearance in the jail. One of the turnkeys has been unwell for some days, but his disease has as yet assumed no definite form. New Pene.—Hunt & Miner have received a steel pen so constructed that it can be adjusted to suit any hand, as it can be made to write fine or coarse, os the writer may wish. It is called the " Regulator." FuneraL—Tbe remains of Capt. P. N. Guthrie will be interred to-day. The Duquesne Groys and Scott Legion will turn out to convey thorn to their last reeling place. Commitments.—Up to four o'clock yesterday there were only Mx commitments at the jail, and all of these were for trifling offenses. Burgess Symmes committed a man named Thomas Williams yesterday morning for vagrancy. A stone and a bottle of whisky were found in his pockets. A mild and efficient purgative, pleasant to: the taste, and mild in its operation. Always on hand, resh, by .eir THE SUCCESS WHICH ATTENDS the use of Da J. L. lIIRSIIFELD & RON, mr4 No. 83 Wood street, Pittsburgh, Pu. THE CHEMICAL OLIVE ERASIVE SOAP, manufactured by B. C. & J. 11. Sawyer, rn+ receives the preference over all other kinds ever offered fur family nee. Its advantages over other Soaps are :—lst. It is cheaper to use, one pound being equal to three of common rosin Soap. 2d. Half the time need only be occupied in washing when this Soap is need in place of other Soap. &l. Labor in washing can be nearly dispensed with, as the clothes will require little if any rubbing, thus avoiding their wear on the wash-board. 4th. Boiling the clothes is unnecessary when this Soap Is used, and hard or salt water answers equally as well as soft. 6th. Printers, Machinists, Painters and others, find it far superior to other Soaps. It speedily re. moves grease, tar, paint, printers' ink and dirt from the hands, leaving the skin soft, and free from chapping. To avoid the labor of rubbing the clothes, and the use of the wash-board, the following directions should be followed : For tho washing of eight or ten of a family, take one pound of Soap, cut it into shavings, and dissolve in one gallon of hot water; put the clothes into a tub containing about ten gallons of warm water; pour in the dissolved Soap, and stir thoroughly. Let them soak twenty to thirty minutes, wring out, and rinse in warm water once, cold water twice. A very dirty wrist-band, or seam, or grease sputa, may require a slight rubbing, but otherwise the clothes will come out clean and white, without rubbing or boiling. Cold water may be used in place of hot, requiring about double time in soaking. Fa". Observe our name on each bar. .$25 12% .. 63 00 .. 68 12% CITRATE OF MAGNESIA CHAS. H.
