LOCAL AFFAIRS.
Horrid Self. Murder
Yesterday morning one of the most painful occur
r,oces we have ever been called upon to record took
pl..° at the house of J. B. Dunlevy on Third street.
Mr. Joel Mohler, well known to all the old resi
ients of Pittsburgh, has for some time past been ad
dicted to habits of intemperance. He was employed
in Haft's drug store, at the corner of Sixth and
Wood streets. On Thursday night he was loft in the
.tore alone, and on the return of Mr. Angell, a clerk
in the store, he was found in the store entirely nude.
When asked why he was in this condition, he replied
that the Lord had sent for him, and he was waiting
for him to take him. It was with some difficulty he
was induced to don his clothing and start for his
lodgings, at Mr. Dunlevy's. At four o'clock in the
morning, he was seen by a watchman, and as he
act,' very strangely and the officer did not know
bite, ho took him to the watch h o u s e, la,lieving him
to he insane.. After being placed in a cell he exhib
ited signs of ritmaiot a.potn, I,elieving hiu.self sur
rounded by animals, &o. \', ben Ina Mayor enamined
him in the morning. he dish e l I,in, telling him
to gr, hieue itnru,.f •ir!). Its d;1 d retired t,,
tii3 room Mr. Dooles y en t 10. t , , thero.neshortly
afterward:, who tound :Lending bolero a glass.
A tow minutes altem anis a gurgling noise was heard
in the room above; Mr. Dunlevy rushed up stairs,
a td found him sitting in bed, rt , bloody razor in bis
bawl, and a ghastly wound in his throat. A physi
oi.m was cent ror, but he expired in live minutes. We
have ,eldom witnessed a more terrible sight than the
s,•ene of this suicide. When we saw him life was
extinot, the bed was deluded with blood, and a
ghastly wound, four or five inches in length, expos
ing the whole interior of his throat, was visible. It
was a ghastly, sickening scene. The deceased was a
druggist of great proficiency, about forty years of
ago, and unmarried; ho had no enemies, and his
many good qualities wade all who were intimate with
him hi,: friends. Ile has for some time been lodging
with Mr. Dunlevy, who has exercised a brotherly
care over him, hut, as the event proved, without any
permanent good result. Wo hope this terrible exam
ple of the ..11 . --eos of intemperance may prove a terri
ble warning to others ineimed to f how in the same
path. The deceased has two brothers; residing at
Lockingport, Shelby county, Ohio, but, we believe,
n i relatives in this city.
The Tonnage Tax
The chief engine builders, ship carpenters, joiner
and all other artivine employed in the building of
thtats at this port have signed a memorial to the Leg
lat ure, praying for a repeal of the Tonnage Tax. W'o
give a copy of the petition :
I', the honorable the Senate and the House of Repre
sontatives of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania
The metn, rial of the mechanics and others en
gaged in building, fitting and furnishing steamboats in
the city of Pittsburgh and its vicinity, respeeiluily
represents, that owing to the decline in the business
fr•ightirg on the Ohio river, within the past eight
m nibs, t,this port, they now find themselves with
out employment ; there to tug few or no orders nor
new b-tits. The number of boots built in this die
mot annna ly is about Sixty, and the amount of cost
is more than one million two hundred thousand dol
lars, nearly all of which is expended in paying for
iron, lumber, fuel and other products of the State, arid
wages of labor. Many thousand persons have here
tohtre obtained the means of subsistence in the city
or Pittsburgh, and the neighbcring counties of Beaver,
Wt.shingtom Weettuorcland, Fayette and Omen°, by
the construction of boas.
The decline of the trade of the Purt of l'i ,, tebu•t;it
is attributed, by all persons conversant with the
inot?einent of busilies,t, to the fact that other routes
between the E.lBl and the West carry at lower rates
of treght th n can be afforded by that of our own
Ste te.
With the view r f cheapening the cost of trans.
p o-tation by the Pounsyivania route, end satisfi,d
a.: we are of the itnpoliey of enac ing a tax on trade,
which operates so expressively upon ourselves, aLd
so injuriously to the interesta and prosperity of tl.e
State, we rc. , Dec!fully, but most earnestly, pray the
honorable Logislature to repeal the Tonnage Tnx
r m meed on freight passing over the Pennsylvania
tiiiiroad.
Country Items
We learn from the Connellsville " Enterprise,"
that the Fayette County Railroad Company have so
cured at this time, individual subscription to the
amount f ninety odd thousand dollars, and that tic
borough of Union will ta.te ten thousand dollars
stock. The Commissioners, at their last meeting,
cencluded to take out Weir charter, and we under.
stand that a survey of the line will be commenced in
a few days. This is gratifying intelligence to the
friends of this enterprise; we trust that it will be
prosecuted with vigor to the end.
On 141,nday morning last a fire was discovered I.y
a school teacher in the basement of the Union church
in Kittanning. The tire originated in a defective
flue. The alarm was given, the citiz,•ns repaired to
the ~ p ot with buckets, and the tiro woo soon satin.
cieveral tires have recently occurred in th,t
t.,c‘ri. We think it would be advisable fur .them to
procure a fire engine.
lAmos Madison Morney, who was arrested by our
police a few weeks since and taken to Uniontow.,,
where he was confined on a charge of horse stAalin-J,
escaped frmn the jail of that pla , c on Saturday night
last. lie was confined iu the upper tier of cells, and
with a piece of his bedstead he made a hole in the
covering or the cell, which is stone, made his eglf
through this, and then through the skylight. Ile
was seen on Sunday morning, near Brownsville, but
since that time has not been heard of.
The scarlet fever is quite prevalent in Mercer
county at present, and several deaths have occurred
from it. The " Democratic Register" says that
ahout a year since it raged fearfully in that vicinity,
frequently taking several out of the same family.
The Belle of Washington
Our lady novelists seem to have all conceived the
idea of writing a book .about the same period; at
least their productions find their way to the public
all at once. We have before us a copy of a new work,
entitled "The Belle of Washington," from the pen
of Mrs. N. P. Laselle, of Washington, D. C. We
have not often examined a work with more interg.t
than this ore. The scenes portrayed in this work
are nut mere fancy sketches, but a true picture of life
in the Capital, and those who are familiar with society
in that metropolis cannot fail to recognize its truth
fulness. It is almost impossible to read for half an
hour in this book without becoming so deeply inter
ested in it as to finish it. ,There is a charm in the
purity, nobility and innocence of the heroine which
touches a tonler chord in the heart of all. In Edwin
'itanmore we see the effects of a well guided atnbis
tine, and his rise is but example of what exertion,
combined with purity of heart and true manhood can
do. The character of the gentle, lovely Ella Stan
more is also exquisitely drawn. But we cannot par
ticularize further. Suffice it to say, the work is corn
plate in detail, exalted in moral, and interesting as
whole, and we advise all our readers to purchase and
read it. The work is published by T. B. Peterson
Co., Philadelphia, and for sale by Hunt & Miner,
Masonic Hall, Fifth street.
Ilcimamry Academy.—The cornmen , etnent ex

ei.iure to attend.

circulation in the city yesterday to the effect that
Munroe Stewart had died at Passavant's EtoEpital
some time on Thursday night or Friday mornink.
We took occasion to enquire into the truth of the

very low, and his rt:covery is a matter of much
ioubt.
The Lut: Case.—We learn that Mr. Marshall

The first anniversary of the Young Mon's Chris

evening, in Dr. Prossly's Church. That large build

of the most interesting character. The exorcises
wore opened by singing by audience and a prayer by
Rev. Dr. Pressly.

The Invigorator cures Sick Headache. Take one or two
