An Old Gentleman Swindled out of 511.000 by the 44 Husband , ' Game. A few mouths since, an old gentleman from Newark, Now Jersey, came to Now York on busi ness. One evening, while passing along Broad way, he was accosted by a woman. Though his head was graced with the snows of many winters, his heart was as inflammable of that of any youth in the dog days of life. The old gentleman made but slight resistance to the charms of the siren, and finally consented to accompany her home. The happy oouple had scarcely entered the house, when an infuriated man rushed into the room, and frantically exclaimed :—" I have found you out! You are betraying me, but your paramour shall not escape my just vengeance. I will make him feel what it is to destroy the happiness of a loving husband 1" The lady screamed, implored, wept, and finally, as a last resort, fainted. The elderly seducer protested on his honor that the unfortunate lady was innocent. For some time the husband sternly refused to listen, but at length, through the entreaties of a friend who had accompanied him, he agreed to accept a thousand dollars, and say no more about the matter. The old gentleman being rich, was glad to es cape thus easily. He paid one hundred dollars down, all the money he had with him, and prom ised that he would give the rest at ten o'clock next morning, making an appointment at the New York Hotel for that purpose. In security for this agreement he was easily induced to leave behind his fine gold watch and chain. Next morning, at the appointed hour and place, the old man paid over to the injured husband and frienu the additional nine hundred dollare, and left for home, thinking the matter was wholly settled so far as he was concerned. But he was wofully mistaken, for soon afterward his mascu line friends called upon him at his own house; and by threats of exposure and legal proceedings unless he complied, induced him to pay two thousand dollars more. This visit they solemnly promised would be the last, but it was not. They called again and again, and by means of the old threats contrived not CO leave empty-handed. One day, the friend, by whose kind interces sion the compromise had first been made, called upon the old gentleman and told him that the loving husband, whose peace -he had destroyed, was dying, and for obvious reasons it would be well to pay him a visit, that he might not, in his paroxysms, divulge the secrets which it would be well to keep quiet. The old gentleman followed to the house of the dying man. He was ushered into a darkened room, and there beheld the in jured husband, apparently in the last agonies, crying out, " Let me clutch the destroyer of my happiness and my wife's honor ! bring him be fore me!" The old man, badly frightened, begged the few. sympathizers who were present to keep the dying man quiet, and freely left be hind him two thousand dollars more to pay the poor fellow's funeral expenses and doctor's bills. He had paid nine thousand dollars in all, and now, he thought, the matter must surely end. But again he was mistaken. One evening his domestic dares were invaded by two seedy-looking gentlemen, whose appear ance indicated perfect specimens of the genus literary, who live by writing sensation stories, and digging up scandal like ghouls. They in troduced themselves and presented him with a neatly written manuscript, which they requested him to peruse. To his horror he found it to be a highly colored account of the nocturnal adven ture, names, So., in full. The peace and good name of his family were at stake, so he asked what sum would induce them to suppress it. After some consultation they named two thou sand dollars, saying that their publisher had al ready paid for it, but out of consideration for his family they would withdraw it. The money was handed over, the manuscript burned, the writers took their departure, and the old man, with his purse now considerably lightened, plucked up courage to prevent further extortion. With this view he notified some New York• police officers, and begged their protection. One of these offi cers (Henry Hope), after considerable search, succeeded in arresting one of the swindlers. The prisoner was brought before Recorder Bar nard, who committed him temporarily, an affi davit having been made against him. The old gentleman, who had been victimized so badly and in a manner so old, would not, however, press the.affair to a further examination for fear of the publicity which would ensue, but ex pressed himself satisfied in tho knowledge that he would not be further disturbed. Work on a Sugar Plantation. A correspondent who spent the last winter on a sugar plantation in Louisiana, furnishes the Boston Traveler the following interesting account of the planting, cultivation, and ma nufacture of the sugar crop in that State: " Last winter most of my time was spent on -4 sugar plantation in Louisiana. I found, that Upon a well cultivated plantation the product w•ss about 2,400 pounds of sugar and 2,000 pounds or 160 gallons of molasses per acre, and upon the plantation that I was visiting the mill produced one thousand gallons of juice per hour, about twenty hours in a day, giving ten hogs heads of sugar, or 12,000 pounds, and twenty barrels of molasses, or 800 gallons, weighing twelve pounds per gallon. "In Louisiana the cane never ripens, and therefore is allowed to grow as long as it can be done with safety from frosts. In the latter part of October they commence by saving their seed, that is by cutting tne cane they need for plant ing, and securing it by placing it in mats, so called, on the ground, say twenty feet by forty, resting it on the embankmeat, with the buts on the ground at au angle of about twenty degrees, leaving a mass of tops c, the surface, a foot deep, and forming a perfect protection against frost. "Next they commence to take off thin crops. Every negro has at all times iu his possession a cane knife, like a butcher's clever, and' kept very sharp. With the back of the knife he knocks off the dry leaves, and cuts of the stook as of no value where the leaves aro green. Should a frost come whilst they are making su gar the work is stopped,. and all hands are em ployad in winnowing the cane in the fields, as a fermentation commences immediately if it is al lowed to stand. " After making the sugar they commence pl luting, which is done once for three years. No manure is used. It is planted by burying two lines of cane in a plow furrow, and culti vated like'corn, in rows seven feet apart. The fourth year the laud is put in corn and peas. After the corn' is gathered the stocks and peas are plowed in, and the laud is ready for cane again. ' " The cane is as certain as any large'crop we have. The unusual cold for three winters past has diminished the oror from 440,000 hhds. in 1853, to 73,000 last year. But this year the (Top will be 250 to 300,000 hhds., and if we have a mild winter may be as large next year as in 1852, when the planters sold their molas ses for four cents a gallon, or three pounds for a cent. The high price for molasses the past season was altogether from speculation." A Rainy sight In Mo . Care. The editor.of the New York Courier thus dis courses upon tho advantages of civilization : " We have tested the comforts of a night of rill 1, gloom, wild wind, and all that the storm could devise to impress upon the traveler what an invention, what a charm of civilization, thrice refined, it was to roll securely through all this gloom, and in the face, in the scowl of the storm, and while the rain dashed over road and river, to he borne rapidly and safely in a lighted ruins, and where the thoughts could glide into indolent perplexity, the very threshold to sleep. " A rainy night in the cars! That it is whioh lifts this century high, if not dry, above all ethers. Where else but in our times, and where else but in the lands of the civilizld, could the traveler smile at the storm, and find rather more pleasure from the contrasts than hindrance from its power? The wanderer over the earth a cen tury or a half-century since would, on such a night as this,' have been the personification of a -dull despair. He would have been saturated at thwfirsi mile, begrimmed at the second, had been introduced, with every prospect of a close acquaintance, to consumption and rheumatism at the close of his doleful journey."
