of Virginia,delivered on last Monday, 22d ult:, on
the occasion of the inauguration of the statue of
Washington Monument, at Richmond. It Is a
characteristic and eloquent speech : .
COUNTRYMEN AND FELLOW CITIEENB: Virginia
has called the Nations, its Elders and Counsel
lore,—her sister states, their governors, lawyers,
and judges, her own r eople and all the children
of this Confederate Family of Freedom, to a/isem
ble, this anniverary birth day, 'around the Monu
ment she has raised to the memory of that son
whose wisdom,- valor and virtue, won the grand
est, proudest, purest of all earthly titles--.!Fath
er of his Country!" In her name I bid you all—
all! welcome to the gathering around Virginia's
Monument to Washington.
Magic name ! If none other under Heaven eau
draw us to each other, that talisman can touch
the chord of unison and clasp us hand In hand,
and bind us heart to heart, in the kindred heir
ship of one Patriotic Father I Before, that au
gust name Fend and Faction stand abashed—Ci
vil Disoordihushes into awed silence—schisms and
Sections are subdued and vanished; for .in the
very naming of that name there is the sweet con
cord of Love, Veneration, Gratitude, Duty, Pa
triotism, and Self-Devotion—in it there is the
harmony of Peace, and the Power only of victo
rious War, and the spell of Order and Liberty
and Law, and the strength andbeauty of NATION
AL UNION ! It typifies all that there is and ought
to be of Goodness and Greatness and majesty in
that county we call "Our Country"--THE UNI

We will, then, this day gather together the Na
tional Affections, and bind them as American
fasces around the statue, erected by the Mother

tist—crawfordr-has been called—away 1 Be

and he cast the Equestrian Statue and mounted
the Washington on the War Horse and—laid down
his chisel. It was finished—it was enough, and

original, the "hero and the sage" himself, fin a

clay;and monuments are not "built with, hands,"
and are " eternal in the Heavens !" •
HIS-widow is here. She sees through her tears
of the Joy of . Grief a husband's Masterpiece links
his name, perennially, as bronze , and marble lasts,
to all the worth of Washington! Gently, softly,
tenderly, we bid her welcome, but—not to mourn.

Courier and Enquirer, in commenting on the re
cent attempt to assassinate Louis Napoleon and
the Empress Eugenie in the Rue Lepelletier, has
the following:
The similarity betweon this atrocious attempt
and that of the 3 Nivose, 1.801, on the life of the
Emperor Napoleon the First (then only First
Consul, however,) is moat striking. The Empe
ror's presence at the performance of 'one of
Haydn's oratorios at the opera house, then situ
ate in the Rue Richelieu, but since rased because
of the assassination there in 1820 of the Duo de
Berry, had been announced. He was for some
other reason or presentiment disinclined to go,
but Madame, Bonaparte—his "adorable J ose •
phine;!-,-prevailed on him. He entered his car
riage and left the'Tuileries at about eight o'clock.
The coachman of - His Majesty, who was rather
more than elevated by copious libations, pro
ceeded on quitting the Place du Carousal by the
Rue Nioarge, a narrow street, which no longer
exiets:
As he entered it at a smart trot, he saW that
which had the appearance of a water-carrier's
cart, with a barrel on it, rather in his, Way, sus
piciously, as it seemed to him. The fumes of
wine at once evaporated, and whipping his horses
into a swift gallop, he cleared the obstruction,
bat had hardly passed it when a terrific explo
sion took place. The barrel I have mentioned
was full of griapawder, with a match appended
to it; and which the miscreant charged with that
duty (and to whom, thirty-live years afterwards,
I was introduced here in Paris,) ignited, allow
ing, as he calculated, time exactly for the arrival
of the Emperor and the dely which the removal
of the cart would occasion. The Emperor con
tinued his course to the Opera House, and re
mained there some time.
Tie exploSion was nearly as fatal as that of
Thursday night last, (14th inst). Some of the
Emperor's escort were wounded, as were num
bers of other persons, windows broken and
houses shattered, Ste. • Some of conspirators who
got no- the villainous attempt were tried, con
victed and executed. The scoundrel-who , fired
the fuse escaped , as I have shown.
