It seems that the mania for dueling so prevalent
about the seat of government recently has hail an
effect upon our vicinity, and has resulted in one of
those bloody encounters in our very midst. It seems
that a few evenings since, while engaged in a game
of billiards at a fashionable hall, a few words passed
between a merchant of Wood street and a steamboat
cap:ain, and the former, conceiving himself insulted,
forthwitn challenged his enemy to mortal combat.
The captain, feeling himself aggrieved, accepted the
challenge, and as the choice of weapons was his priv
ilege by the code, ho selected rifles as the weapons.
When the merchant received this message he de
murred, and declined the terms. The captain in•
slated on his choice. The matter remained unsettled
until Friday, when the merchant having made some
remarks derogatory to the dignity of the steamboat
captain, the latter agreed to accept the terms of the
other and fight with pistols. The parties were to
stand ten paces apart, with their backs to each
other, and to wheel and fire at the word of com
mand. The duel was to take place at Collins' Park,
near Ea-t Liberty, at five o'clock on Friday evening.
A well known physician was requested to be in at
tendance, and it is stated that the merchant made his
will before leaving the city ; we cannot, however,
vouch for this. All the preliminaries being arranged,
the principals, with their seconds and an umpire, left
in separate corriages, and arrived at the ground
shortly before five o'clock. The appointed hour be
held the two antagonists standing ten paces apart, in
their shirt sleeves, pistols in hand. At the words
one, two, three, turn and fire," they wheeled around
and fired together, but neither fell. The pistols
were then re-loaded, the word again given, and the
parties fired. This time the fire was more decisive,
for the steamboat captain was seen to stagger and
fall backward. The merchant stepped towards him,
and seeing the blood streaming down, Bought safety
in flight. Ile seized his garments end made for the
fence, but was intercepted by a spectator. Be then
went back to tho fatal spot, and, with his second,
drove rapidly to town. It is sail ghat he wished to
leave the city, but was prevailed upon by some of his
friends to go to the Mayor's office trod give himself
up, but ho did not find the Mayor at his office. Ile
expressed penitence for the act, and it was not until
Saturday morning that he was informed that he bad
been hoaxed, that the pistols were loaded without
" cold lead," and that the blood was only a red fluid,
prepared for the occasion. The matter had been ar
ranged by the seconds and the captain, and in ac
cordance with the programme, he fell to the earth,
leading his adversary to believe that he had killed
him. The merchant was not the only party sold;
two or three spectators left, the ground with a power.

Seriously, we are glad to be able to chronicle a
bloodless terminaticn to this duel, but we think that
if cur northern men will adopt this dueling system,
it is not right that one of the parties should be made
game of In this caao one of the gentlemen was ap
prised of the fact that the weapons wore not loaded
with hall, and rho man who, not knowing this cir
cumstance, had the courage to face his antagonist, is
held up to ridicule. It would be only fair that both
should be apprised of the fact, or both remain in
ignorance of it.
A n.eoting of the members of the Bar, for the pur
pose of taking action in relation to the appointment
of a now law judge, was held on Saturday afternoon
at the Court House.
The meoting was organized by ealling D. D. Bruce,
Esq., to the Chair, and appointing T. J. Bigham and
F. C. Flannigan Vice Presidents, and J. 11. Hopkins
and John W. Riddell Secretaries.

Tho Chairman stated the object of the meeting,
and Mr. Barton offered the following resolution,
which was unanimously adopted :
Re4olved, That the members of the Bar of Pitts
burgh respectfully request the members of the Leg
islature from this county to use their influence in
favor of the act extending to the whole State, or at
least to Allegheny county, the acts of April 10th,
1848, and April 10th, 1849, as proposed in House bill
No. 150.

Thomas Howard, Esq., than moved that a commit
tee be appointed to report as to the expediency and
propriety of memorializing the Legislature to create
an additional law judge, in the Courts of Common
Pleas, Quarter Sessions, &c. The Chair appointed
Messrs. Howard, Barton, Carnahan, Wingard and
Magee a committee.
This committee reported through their Chairman,
Thomas Howard, Esq., that in their opinion, from
the great amount of litigation in this county, the
new judge was necessary, and that the Legislature
possesses the power to provide one or more additional
judges. This report is quite lengthy and a very able
document. It was on motion accepted and adopted.
After some discussion, Thomas M. Marshall, Eeq
moved that the whole matter be referred to a com
mittee of five, to prepare a bill and memorial, to he
submitted to an adjourned meeting of the Bar on
Saturday nest, at two o'clock, P. M.
The Chair appointed the following committee un
dor this resolution : T. J. Bigham, Thomas Mellon,
George P. Hamilton, 'S. C. Wingard and John 11.
Hampton.
The meeting then adjourned to moot as ab JWO.

Mot in Allegheny--Two Men wounded.
Quite a serious affray occurred in Allegheny City
on Saturday afternoon, about four or five o'silook, in
which an Irishman, named Patrick Doolan was badly
beaten. It seems that some fifteen or twenty men
were employed in the grading of Seminary Hill, and
Saturday being pay day, it was proposed as is the
custom, to purchase some whisky and take a little
spree. Doolan refused to contribute his share, as he
would not drink, which engendered ill feeling, and
after the remainder of the party had indulged pre ty
freely in "fighting whisky," they fell upon and beat
him unmercifully. He received a wound with a pick
axe on the right shoulder ; also with similar instru
ments on the face and back of the he'd. He was
struck with a large boulder, and received several
kicks and bruises on various parts of the body. He
would probably have beeq killed had he not been
rescued. Three men, named William Bruce, William
Stewart and Jacob Wilson, were arrested and corn
mittod to jail. Bruce had two slight cuts on one
arm; but it is not known by whom they were in
!Doted. Warrants have been issued for the arrest of
other parties implicated. Doolan was held in one
hundred dollars bail to appear as a witness.

Duelling Extraordinary
Meeting , of the Bar.
More Stolen Cloode.—We understand that a gentle
man, whose name we are not at liberty to give, called
on Messrs. Hess d Schmidt, on Saturday, bringing
with him a silk dross pattern, valued at thirty dol
lars, which he had purchased from Cady, the young
man whose arrest we noticed Saturday. Ho had seen
an account of his misdoings, and feeling that the
dress had been stolen, his conscience would not allow
him to keep it, and he accordingly returned the aeti
cle. The silk-was recognized by Mr. Hess, as a piece
missed by him last November. He is of opinion that
Cady has abstracted several hundred dollars' worth
of goods from the store, but the young man stoutly
denies the soft impeachment..
PietAblirgh Theatre —Mr. Owens concluded his en
gagemenT at the Theatre on Saturday evening, with
the drama of the "Rake's Progress," in which ho
sustained the character of Sam Slap. This evening
Mr. J. a. Hanky, the young American tragedian,
who is hereafter to act as stage manager at the Thea
tre, appears as Ingomar, with Miss Kimberly as Par
thonia. If Mr. Hanky can please a Pittsburgh au
dience in the character of Ingothar, he will be a fa
vorite here, as the lamented Brelsford played that
character so perfectly as to render our theatre goers
somewhat fastidious. We hope to see Mr. Hanley
welcomed with a good house.
The Penn Street Crosalng—On Saturday,epplication
was made in the District Court, before Judges Ramp
ton and Williams, for an injunction against the Mayor
an 1 police of Pittsburg h,to prevent them from interfer
ing with the Pittsburgh, Fort Wayne and Chicago
Railroad Company, in laying their track across Penn
street. Mr. John H. Hampton, Solicitor for the
Company, occupied some time with an argument in
favor of the injunction, at the close of which the
Court adjourned. Mr. Foster, the City Solicitor, will
reply at nine o'clock this morning.
The Blakely Estate.—As J. J. Mitchel, assignee of
the estate of James Blakely, has resigned, several
petitions have been presented to Judge M'Clure, ask.
ing for the appointment of Mr. Cummins in his stead.
Others are in favor of Mr. M'Masters being appoint.
ed. The Judge considered the matter important, and
placed it on the list of questions to be discussed in
the Court of Common pleas. It will come up for
discussion during the present week.

has had the effult of producing a short crop of these
delicious bivalves. Some of the Eastern papers
complain of a scarcity of t:36 article there, but we
have yet an abundant supply in Pittsburgh.' Col.
Cyrus Reed, under the St. Charles, is daily in receipt
of large supplies of the best quality, and expects to
be able to supply a resonable demand until the close
of the season.
Plea of Insanity.—Tho counsel of Mrs. }laird, of
Birmingham, recently committed for an attempt at
infanticide, applied for her dismissal on Saturday,
on the ground of insanity. Judge M'Clure said ho
had no right to assume insanity ; that the Justice by
whom she was committed might take bail far her ap
pearance; but refused to re!easo her without se.
crafty.
Butler County Convention.—The bemocratie Coun
ty Committee of Butler County met on Friday last,
and elected Judge Marshall and James G. Campbell,
Esq., Representative delegates. The Senatorial del
egates were conceded to Beaver county. The meet
ing was harmonious. Tho delegates - are Administra
tion men, though they aro not instructed.

The Mayor's Sunday Levee.—Yesterday morning
Mayor Weaver had quite a mottly crow before him,
numbering in all thirty-two. John Doran and Nanoy
his wife were both drunk—John whipped Nancy's
child—a row insued—tho couple were arrested—John
was committed for five days and Nancy was discharg
ed.
Sarah Laughran bad been taking a little too much
—and while her husband Billy Laughran was say
ing hie prayers, she commenced a dance which in -
turrnpted him—he called the watch—and Sarah struck
the watchman with a skillet. Sae was arrested and
fined $2 by the Mayor, but being unable to liquidate
was sent up for five days.
John Carr and John Smergan got into a row at
Hauk's Lager Boor Hall, corner of Wood and Water.
Carr said Smergan had his shirt on. They were both
drunk—arrested by the watch, paid their fines and
were discharged.
Mike Hollinger and John Donahue got into a fight
at Blount's Exchange in the Diamond, were put out
into the street, where they were arrested by the waiuti.
Mike paid his tine of $2 and John was sent up.
A party of six were arrested at a drinking home
on Smithfield street, where they had a regular fight
—the noire wss hoard for two squares. The whole
party was arrested and fined $5 each, except the tav
ern-keeper, who, being a little more disorderly than
the rest was charged $lO. The whole party paid up.
Alexander Haney and John McManus living on
center avenue, amused themselves by singing, and
dancing what they styled the Indian dance, taking a
little of " the craytur " between times. Their amuse
ment disturbed the neighbors ; they wore arrested
and sent to jail for ten days in default of fine.
Fanny Cullum and Mag Love, two oyprians, were
found on the street drunk, abusing a certain man
who had deserted Funny. They were arrested and
fined $1 each, which they paid.
Mark Walkup, found drunk, was sent to jail fur
five days.
Three young follows were arrested for disorderly
conduct at a drinking house on St. Clair street. The
proprietor had closed the door, but they got in, broke
glasses,dco. They were committed ten days each, in
default of a fine of $lO.
Terry Laughlin, who became so notorious in the
McGovern pig case, was committed thirty days fur
vagrancy.
Diecharged.—John Kemp, whom we referied to
some days since as being confined in the county jail,
on a charge of larceny, was discharged on Saturday.
The evidence showed that the informant, who has
not appeared, was a worthless, unprincipled man, and
as the young man had been in jail for some two
months, he was informed that there was no charge
against him, and he was accordingly released.
Fire in Allegheny.—On Saturday morning about
two o'clock, a fire was discovered in a tram° boose
on the corner of Hamilton and Bidwell streets, Ails
glienyrowned and occupied by Mr. Anderson, and
before the flames could be extinguished, the house
and a great portion of its contents were destroyed.
The origin of the fire is not precisely known. Los

Accepted.—We notice by an advertisement in the
" Evening Reporter" of Saturday, that the challenge
for a trial of skill in shooting, by Capt. Geo. Neiely
of Green county, has been accepted by Mr. Daniel
Armstrong and three other gentlemen of this city.
The stakes are $lOO a side, and the contest will come
off near Pittsburgh.
Another fire in Allegheny.—On Sunday afternoon.
about half past two o'clock, a fire was discovered in
Straub's Brewery, on Ohio street, Allegheny, near the
city line, and the building wss entirely destroyed be
fore it could be extinguished. We have nut ascer
tained the amount of loss or whether there was any
insurance on the building. The fire originated in
the drying of the malt.
Sentence of Coop.—James Coop, the reputed Jack
Ketch, who was recently convicted of abducting a
witness, was brought before Judge M'Clure on Sat
urday. His counsel plead for a light sentence, and
after a few remarks the Judge sentenced him to
twelve months imprisonment in tho county jail.
Literary Circle.—The Literary Circle of the Pitts
burgh Female College met on last Friday evening.
The pupils show much proficiency in their studies.
This school has become widely and deservedly pupa.
lar, and is steadily increasing in numbers.
The Steinberg Case.—This case was before Judge
M'Cluro again on Saturday. Some new testimony
has been produced, bearing strongly in favor of the
prisoner, and the case has been postponed for another
week.
,Accident.—Burgess Buhoup, of Duquense Borough
had one of his fingers taken off by a circular saw,
whilo in the act of sawing some match blocks in his
factory, on Friday. It was by the merest good for
tune that his entire hand was not cut off.
Mr. O. P. Sheraa, of this city, has been appointed
General Superintendent and Treasurer of tho New
Castle Gas Works. We consider this an excellent
appointment, as Mr, S. is fully competent to the dis
charge of the duties attendant upon his position.
The Kelly Canc.—This case come up Lr argiimant
in the Court of Common Pleas on Saturday, but WbEi
postponed until next Saturday, when the evidence
on the motion for a new trial will be heard and a de
cision given.
Commitment by RequeBt.—A young man went to
the office of Alderman Lewis on Friday evening and
requested to be committed to jail as he was without
friends, home or money. His request was complied
with.
Farmers' Aesooiation.—A meeting of this body
has been called for tornight. Important busineb,
will come up, amongst which is the new constitution,

Mayor's Office.—At the Mayor's office yesterday
morning only five common cases wore on hand; three
worn discharged and two committed to jail.

Yesterday the rain fell all day, and up to dark the river
had raised about a foot. There is now no doubt but that
there will be sufficient water for the complete resumption
of navigation, and by Wednesday we hope to be able to au
pounce the departure of the first boat.
