NO. 138 WOOD STREET NUMBER 117. THE DAILY MST. MONDAY MORNING Western Missouri..lts Mineral Resour. oes, Soil, Climate, sc. The western portion of the State of Missouri is beginning to attract attention among people desirous of emigrating from the older States, or whO are seeking profitable investments for their capital. ' The salubrious climate, productive soil, and abundant mineral wealth;together with the prospect of its soon becoming a free State, haNie given it an importance in the eyes of north ern emigrants, hitherto overlooked or discarded. The following letter from Professor Swallow, State Geologist of Missouri, will be found highly interesting at this time : COLUMBIA, Mo., January 11, 1868. H. D. DOWNLY, Esq., President of the Swart Creek Lead and Copper Mining Company—Sir : In answer to your inquiries respecting the min eral resources of , the lands of the "Swan Creek Lead and Copper Mining Company," in Taney c)unty,, Missouri, I am compelled to speak from an examination of a part only of the territory in which those lands are located. 1 traversed the northern half of township 26 north, in range 18 and 19 West, of the sth principal meridian. All the rocks in these townships, and in fact in the townships south of them, belong to the Magnesia Limestone series, which contain pearly all the vast deposits of Iron, Lead, Zinc, Copper and Cobalt of our State. These townships have every appearance of being one of the richest mineral regions of•the State. The county is very rugged and broken, with a great abundance of all the minerals and geological features, which usually aticonspan'y Lead, Zinc, Iron and Copper. I can safely say, I saw mare or less of Lead and Iron in every section 1 passed over in Taney county, and Zino and Copper in quite a number of the localities. The Lead is undoubtedly the most valuable, as it has been found more or less abundant in al most, if not quite, all the numerous shafts sunk in this part of the country, and rich veins are seen traversing the socks in several places. The following from my Geological report will give a general view of the resources of. South Western Missouri. Those are from the Report on the South Western Branch of the Pacific Rail road : TOPOGIIANITI—That portion of the State over which the South Western Branch of the Pacific) Itailroad passes, in its course from Lebanon, in La Clede county, to the State line in Newton, is a high undulating table land, rather than a part of the Ozark Mountains, as it's usually repre sented on the maps of the cou;aty. The eleva- on of this county is about 1500 foot above the There is no swamp overflowed lands from which noxious exhalations can arise to affect any considerable portion of this country. The climate, as these facts plainly indicate, is temperate, dry and salubrious ; the summers are long and temperate, while the winters are short and mild. No climate, in short, is better adapted to secure health and a liixurious growth of the staple products of, the t mporate zone. WaTEß.—There is probably no part of this continent that boasts so large a number of bold, limpid springs, whose pure, cold waters gush forth to beautify the land. These springs and streams contain a great va riety and abundance - of excellent fish, and are driving the numerous mills and factories which supply the flour, meal, and lumber of this flour ishing region, and they ha've abundant capacity to supply all the water power necessary to propel all the mills and factories demanded by any or dinary population. While the springs and streams, large enough to furnish excellent mill sites, are very numer ous, the smaller fountains and branches are so abundant that scarcely a section is destitute of them. The pure limpid streams and fountains of the South west, are unrivalled for their beauty and adaptation to the wants of man. MINERALS.—The mineral wealth of the region under consideration is very great, and cannot fail, when fully developed, to command the ad miration of the world, And greatly increase the material wealth of oar State. Building materials are very abundant in all parts. There is an ample supply of limestone, sand stone and marble suitable for all the pur poses to which such materials ate applied in do mestic economy. Clays, sands, gravel and peb bles also exist in large quantities. Iron Ore of most excellent quality exists in great quantities. The red and brown hemiatites are the most common, they occur in the ferru ginous sandstone and are must abundant in the west and southwest of Green county. Furnaces might be established hero with great promise of success.. Zino is also found in large quantities. Zino blends (the black Jack of the miners) is abund ant in nearly all the mines of the south-west. The carbonate and silicate of Zino also occur in several localities. Whether these ores can be separated and melted with profit, will be better determined when we have made the analysis of them: COPPER.—The sulphuret and the carbonates of copper were observed at several localities in the mines of Taney county, in the Granby mines at Spurgeon's Prairie, and at several localities in the western part of Lawrence. The most prom ising localities are those in Lawrence and Greene, and the " Goose Diggings" in Taney. Lead is to be the great staple of the south west. Some years ago, I reported it one of the best lead regions of the world. All the subse quent developments have, proved the accuracy of that estimate of tho mineral treasures of Jas per and Newton counties. Since that time many of the localities have been more fully developed with great success, and various new ones have been explored with results in some cases still more satisfactory. The mines on Spring River, on Turkey Creek, and in Spurgeon's Prairie, still promise the most satisfactory returns, while at Granby, on the northern bOrder of Oliver's Prairie, the results have been truly wonderful. POPULATION.—In 1850 this region had a popu latioa of about 30,000, which has since rapidly increased. The country is sparsely settled with a hardy, energetic, intelligent, and thrifty yeo manry ; while the towns are flourishing and ra pidly filling up with a wealthy and refined popu lation. Punta° Sonoots are everywhere established, and most liberally endowed with the large State School Funds, and liberal grants of public lands. The bottoms produce a growth of timber equal in size and quality to any in the State. Several trees were measured in the bottoms; a sycamore whose circumference was twenty-eight feet, burr oak twenty-six feet, black walnut twenty-three feet, and a thick s'aellbark hickory twenty-three feet. The prairies are usually fertile, and clothed in a rank growth of native grass. No country is better watered; its streams are numerous, lim pid, and filled with a great variety anti abundance of fish, and its springs are pure and wonderfully large. The agricultural resources of the south west have been vastly underated. TRH GRAPH.—The southwest is doubtless bet ter adapted to the culture of the grape than any of this or the neighboring States. Nature has endowed this part of the country with a temper ate, dry and salubrious climate, and a light rich calcareous and vegetable soil, which produces a vigorous growth of the native vines. And, be s,des, the high bluffs of magnesian limestone of the calciferous and Potsdamage, on the Osage, Niangua, Pomme de Terre Sac, and Grand rivers usual present natural terraces covered by a rich soil, all wonderfully prepared by nature for the planting of vineyards. It is quite certain, in short, that the cultivation of the grape in the south-west can be made a source of great profit and national wealth. But there is an other and higher consideration, which should lead us to encourage the production of the native vines, as the vigor and sobriety of the nation would be greatly promoted by substituting the pure healthful juice of the grape for the drug ged and poisonous liquors so abundantly manu factured and consumed at the present day. Srocir.—This region of country possesses many advantages for raising stock,_ particularly neat cattle, horses, mules and sheep. The broad prairies furnish cicellent grazing for the salu brious summers• and the winters are so short and mild, that but little feeding is neoeesary. MARCH 1, 1858
