A 0 Yor:ril) LOCAL AFFAIRS. • A Dishonest Clerk. Yesterday morning, a young man named Charles Cady was arrested and arraigned before Mayor Weaver, charged with stealing a quantity of goods from Messrs. Hess & Smith, dry goods merchants on Market street. He is a young German, who has heretofore had a good character, and was considered by his acquaintances an honest young man. He was employed as a clerk in the store, and getting posses sion of an extra key, his facilities for robbing his employers were good, and it would seem from the evidence that he helped himself. The affair was dis covered in this wise: On Thursday evening he called at O'Brien's pawnbroker office, on Third street, and representing that he was 'a pedlar by occupation, just arrived from the East, stated that he wished to 801 l a quantity of goods which ho had with him in a carpet bag. Mr. O'Brien, thinking the manner of the young man suspicious, went out, foand officer Hague, and told him of the circumstance. Mr. Haply returned to the office, and, suspecting all 'was not right, arrested him. C . , dy adhered to his story at the Mayor's office for some time, asserting.. that he was a stranger in the pity, but finally aeknliwledged he was net. The carpet sack was examfned and found to contain two valuable shawls, severi.l collars, silk handkerchiefs, pieces of cassimere, and other articles, all of which Messrs. Hess 1c Smith Metalled as belonging to them. These gentlemen art. of opin ion that ho has been carrying away goodsfor some time, and that a largo amount has been " npirited " off. Cady, however, denies this. Ho was etimmittod to jail to answer the charge at the next termlof Court. Court of Common Pleas. Before Hon. Wm. B.lt'Clure, President .tudge, The only ease of interest before Judg4 this week was ono in which suit was brougl by Jas_ Donaldson against William Walker, for de = bt. The , evidence in the case showed that Walker vvis in debt to Donaldson ; gave him a note of $6O against Hoff— man for collection, allowing him a percents ; e for the service. Hoffman could not pay, so Don4dson ao copts a new note which included the interekt already due. Mr. John H. Hampton, counsel for dilfendant, argued that his bargaining with Walker's Oper, and holding of the new note, received in his ovn name, was upon his own responsibility, until plairitiff could. prove a guarantee by Was. Walker for thetpayment of hat note. Verdict was returned for defendant . The Court was engaged yo , terday in trying Wm_ Shore, a public officer, for passing a note another State of a less denomination than $5. Thi'. penalty prescribed is $lOO. Uniixpiracy.—lt will be remembered by ot;',r readers that a man named J. N. Miller, residing, in Alla— g,heny, was tried at the last term of the -:Criminal Court for assault and battery, and also for kloping a. tippling house. Yesterday, Miller made oath before. Alderman Lewis, of the Third Ward,"ehirging John Gelder, A. Tiiissont and C. Miller (who 'wore the, prosecuting witnesses in the cases alludedito) with conspiracy and perjury. Ile states that those per sons hail entered into a league or conspirai*to prose cute him for selling liquor without license, and that to effect this object they had perjured theruSelves be fore the Court of Quarter Sessions. Miller Was com mitted in default of bail, and Geisler and Toissont entered bail to appear at ton o'clock on Monday next, when they will have a further hearing. Fatal Aceide,ll.—On last Thursd:i; afternoon an accident occurred at the coal works of Messrs. Cole. man & Ilailman, on the Allegheny Valley Railroad, near Sharpsburg, resulting in the death of Mr. Geo. Shade. A part of the machinery in use at these works is a largo drum, used for hauling up cars by means of a rope passing around it. This apparatus getting out of order, Mr. Shade went up with a crow• bar to start it, but a loaded car being on the railway at the time, ho was unable to get out of the way, and the car starting down the track with great ve. locity, the drum burst, a fragment from which struck him, and he was almost instantly killed. He was thrown several feet from the spot where the accident ocearred. When picked up it was found that his neck was broken. He was a sober, industrious man, about forty years of age, and leaves a large family. Professor Dr Ham'e Soiree —We attended the concert of Professor De Ham and his pupils on Thursday evening, and, in common with the thousand others present, were much pleased with the enter• tainment. The hall was filled in every part, and the audience was a fashionable one. A medley, arranged by Mr. Do Ham for twenty hands, and performed by his pupils, was rapturously encored, and Miss M. De Ham's vocal music was much admired. A vocal duett by Misses Pressly and Rodgers wag also admi rably executed. But it is useless to particularize; every part of the performance was good, and we cannot but congratulate Professor Do Ram ou the proficiency displayed by his pupils, and in so doing we only give expression to the general sentiment which pervaded the audience. The valuable Medical and Miscellaneous Books, from private libraries, advertised for sale this even ing on the second floor of Davis' new auction build ing, Fifth street, aro now arranged fur examination. In addition to this extensive collection of books, are surgical instruments, and one magnetic electric ma chine. The sale is worthy attention from our pro,. fessional and other readers. • Theatre.—Mr. Owens had a good house on the oc casion of his benefit last evening, and, as usual, was received with thunders of applause. To night will close his engagement, when ho will appear as Sam Slap in the " itake's Progress." " The Miseries of Human Life" and the "Beacon of Death " will also be presented. On Monday evening, Mr. J. Q. Han ley will appear. haproeing.—Mrs. King, who suffered so severely at the hands of Mrs. Winterburn, a few days since, is slowly recovering, though still quiet. Mrs. Winterburn is alsi better. Her wound will hardly prove fatal. We think it would be prudent to remove her to the Hospital, where a more con stant watch can be kept over her actions to prevent her from making a second attempt on her life. Court of Quarter Smiona.—This Court meets to• day. Several cases will come up for argument, among which aro the Kelly and Steinburg cases. The sentence of Steinburg has been postponed from week to week, and will probably be decided to-day. Mrs. Gardner will probably ba sentenced, and some action may be taken in the case of Monroe Stewart. Burned.—A woman named Shovelin, of Birming ham, wont to sleep a few evenings since in a bed she had drawn close up to the fire. She awoke shortly afterwards and found the bed on fire. She made her escape, but was quite severely burned. She was taken to the Poor House, her husband being in jail for disorderly conduct. Light.—By reference to our advertising columns, it will be seen that Messrs. T. D. /0 G. ilodkinson have commenced manufacturing " Kerosene oil." This oil is made from tho gas of cannel coal, and produces a beautiful, clear and steady light, without the slightest danger of explosion. By calling at their store, No. 79 Smithfield street, you can obtain a sample of the oil, and see it in burning order. Thalborg.—Wo hear it rumored that Thalberg, the groat pianist, Viouxtemps, and other distinguish d artistes, will pay us a visit during the month of March. Those of our citizens who have heard Thal- oerg will be gratified to hoar this intelligence .Apropos of music—what has become of Frezzolini We had expected to be able to announce her arrive. hero ere this. Pickpockets About.—Yesterday, a lady residing in the First Ward had her pocket picked of two dollars :Ltd some cents in the Diamond Market House, while purchasing a pair,. of chickens. There is a gang of petty thieves whci hang about teat point and plunder whenever an opportunity presents itself. We would like to see some of them arre:§ted and punished. Mayo Office.—At the Mayor's office yesterday morning there were two cases of the usual character. Two of these sere honorably discharged, two paid heir fines, and the remaining six wore furnished Aginge gratis for from two to ten days. Yeaterday'a warm sun completely dispelled what little snow remained in our streets, and the sound of sleigh belle, which has scarcely ceased for at least a week, "are heard no more." The winter BOOMS to have passed away, and we have many indications of a pleasant spring. Grim. Con.—Alderman Rogers on Thursday corn. witted John Dorman and a Mrs. Nelson to jail, on a caarge of adultery preferred by Francis Nelson, the injured husband. A gentleman fell on Smithfield street, yesterday warning, and dislocated his shoulder joint. We ,did not learn his name. Jail.—There were ten commitments to the county jail yesterday ; all of them were, however, for trifling offenses, with the exception of one or two noticed elsewhere. Resumed.—We are informed that the Cambria County Iron Company have again commenced ope rations. They give employment to about ono hun dred and seventy-five hands. Dedication.—On Wednesday last the new Baptis church at West Greenville was dedicated, Revs Steele and Clouse conducting the exorcises. Mr. Joscph Proctor is in Saint Louis, playing a new piece called "(Ho, or the Armorer of Tyro." fie is highly spoken of by the papers of that place. Steiuruck, the model restaurant indi r vidual,- has just received a lot of superb salt oysters. They are not hard to take—we have tried them.. St. Patriclea Day.—lt is announced that Hon. Jos. R. Chandler, of Philadelphia, will lecture in the basement of St. Paul's Cathedral for the benefit of the Orphan's Asylum on the evening of the 17th of Mar2h, St. Patrick's Day. Atlantic Monthly.—We have just received. the March number of the "Atlantic Monthly" from W. A. Gildenfenney, Fifth street. A good number— go and buy a copy. Roy' , l Raglane and Sack Coate.— ; Gents. The Board of Trade were in session all afternoon yesterday, hearing the reading of a report on the subject of the proposition now pending to repeal the railroad tonnage tax, and in reference to the discrim ination made by railroads in their tariff of charges for the transportation of freight, which, it is alleged, bears oppressively on the business interests of Pitts burgh. The report was very elaborate, occupying about thirty manuscript pages, in which the sub ject was most ably discussed, and many facts eli cited showing the great injustice of the railroads in question towards Pittsburgh. The tone of the re port is adverse to the removal of the tonnage tax. The report was accepted and ordered to be published, and the subject will be taken up at the next meeting of the Board, on Friday, when it will be acted on. Another subject of interest was brought before the Board. It appears that the donations made by our citizens, amounting to 5998,21, for the relief of the sufferers by yellow fever in Norfolk and Portsmouth during the summer of 18b5, was not applied to the objeCts for which it was intended. The treasurer of tho fund has written for permission to apply the amount to the benefit of n female House of Refuge, near Baltimore. On motion of Mr. Dickey, a coin• mittee of three was appointed to wh-m the subject was referred, to report to the Board whit disposition should be made of the money referred to. Fire.—Yesterday morning, at a very early hour, the family of Mr. Robert Caskey, residing on Gay alley, Allegheny city, were aroused from their sleep, almost suffocated by smoke, and upon an examination being made, the house was found to be on fire, a part of the first story being enveloped in flames. An alarm was raised, assistance was obtained, and the fire was soon extinguished. The whole back build ing was burned, leaving nothing but the walls. The loss will be about $5OO, and we understand Mr. Cas key was fully insured. It is not known how the fire originated, but as it caught in the dining room, it is supposed that it caught from the grate, in which a fire had been left the evening before. Railroad Accident—An accident occurred on the Pittsburgh, Fort Wayne and Chicago Railroad on Tuesday morning last; the freight train going west on that morning, was thrown off the track when be tween Darlington and Enon stations, by the dropping of one of the rubber blocks. Five freight cars were broken to pieces, scattering the contents, (consisting of dry goods, boots, shoes, cigars, 1z0.,) about in profusion. Fortunately no one was injured by the accident. The mail train going west, and the ex press coming east, being unable to pass the scene of the break up, wore obliged to exchange their passon gers and baggage, and return. Duff's College, corner of Third and Market Streets. —Mr. Duncan's new and splendid system of pen manship, got up by the enterprising principal at a heavy expense, for the benefit of the students, gives a new attraction to the establishment. Both ladies' and gentlemen's classes are rapidly filling up, every student who hereafter graduates being presented with a copy of this valuable and costly work.
