LOCAL AFFAIRS.
Attempted Suicide in the County JAIL.
Mrs. Winterburn, the insane woman who was coma
milted to jail a few days since for attempting to
murder the child of Mrs. King, nttempted to commit
suicide on Wednesday night, under the followink air.
cumstancos : She was confined in a cell along with
two other females ; some time during the night they
were attracted by some peculiar motions of the old
woman, and upon examination it was found sae had
plunged a pair of scissors into her throat and was
moving them backwards and forwards, endeavoring
to make the wound larger. *Mr. Phillips was soon
afterwards called; when ho arrived, ho found her
bleeding quite profusely; the wound was bound up
until yesterday morning, when Dr. Baldwin called
and made an examination. Ho found that the , in
strument had penetrated to the depth of about an
inch and a holt; and that it had been extended by the
movement of the hand to the length of an inch. The
d retina of the wound was upward, and the windpipe
was found to be penetrated. The wound is not neces
sarily fatal, but should inflammation ensue her re
covery will be doubtful in the extreme. Jailor Phil
lip informs us that he had great difficulty in finding
the weapon with which the act was committed. The
old woman declared she bad loft the seism - 8 lying on
the bed; but the cell was thoroughly searched, the
bed t.,1, al,' the instrument could nut be found.
Mr. Phillips then evlinined tile person of Mii. Win
terburn and the inmates of the cell as far as delicacy
would permit, but without finding anything—she
still persisting that she had left them on the bed.
She was then left alone with the two women, who
Lark - io a thorough examination of her person, and
finally found the instrument concealed in a belt
which she wore next her person. It is evident the
woman had concealed the scissors with an intention
or 'nuking another attempt on her life. She is now
cle:oly watched, but may yet elude the vigilance of
her jailors. She should be removed at once to the
Hospital, us she s evidently sadly deranged.

.111,. Cecile Iburte.—We perceive that this laq,
who made such a favorable impression while in
burgh, a short time since, has been very well received
in Philadelphia. We copy the following from the
Philadelphia " Evening Bulletin," of Wednesday :
" Mrs. Cecile Rush was honored with a large audience
last evening, at the Assembly Buildings, where she
gave a series of admirable readings and recitations,
both humorous and pathetic—the former predomina
ting. It was a lively and brilliant entertainment,
and enabled her audience to appreciate the high rep
amino which this lady has been gaining in other
cities."
Visitors to the Jail —Yesterday the office of Jailor
Philips was crowded all day with persons anx'ous to
see and converse with Munroe Stewart. A great
many females are among the numb)r. They are not
all gratified , however, as it is impossible to admit so
wady to the prison, and many are obliged to go away
disappointed. On Tuesday, the day after the arrival
of the pardon, the crowd was so great that it was
fend necessary to close the doors and refuse admit
mac() to all. Jailor Philips has had an arduous task
for the past few months.
Theatre.—Mr. Owons played John Unit
" Self" last evening, for the third time, to an au
dienee equally as good as on any evening since his
engagement. The farce of a " Conjugal Lesson," in
which he appeared as Simon Lullaby, was also loudly
applauded. This evening Mr. Owens takes a benefit,
when he appears as Billy Lackaday, in " Sweethearts
and Wives," as Solon Shingle, in .the "People's
Lawyer," and as Jonathan Gillman, a bridegroom, in
" The Happiest Day of my Life."
Run Over.—Yesterday afternoon at about three
o'clock, a boy about eleven years of age, named Pat
rick Nockton, was passing along Fifth street ; when
ne.ir the Theatre be attempted to cross, and was
knocked down by a horse attached to a wagon loaded
with coal. He fell down and the wagon passed over
his left leg, crushing it badly. His wounds were
cared for by Dr. A. G. Walter. No bones were bro
ken, and the wound is not dangerous. It is almost
a Miracle that the weight of the heavy wagon did
not break any bones.
A ccident.—A •young German, named Jacob Staub,
narrowly escaped with his life at Conemaugh station.
on the Pennsylvania Railroad, a few evenings since.
tle was caught by some of the Machinery attached
to a train of !reigt.t cars, and dragged under the
wheels quite a long distance. -One of his arms was
broken, and his legs were terribly crushed. He was
dragged through Johnstown, and- it is said his cries
were heart-rending.

Weekly Review of Pittsburgh Markets
PLITSBURGII, February 25th, ISSS
Business during the past week has been quite dull,
the present " cold term " having put a complete em
bargo on our river navigation. A cheerful tone,
however, pervades the mercantile community, who
are hopeful of a brisk and profitable spring business.
A fair amount of business has been doing by our
jobbers, the intercourse with our country neighbors
having been greatly facilitated by the recent fall of
snow. Our railroad facilities are ample, an d since
tho closing of the rivers,a large amount of merchan
dize is,passing through to the various places of des
tination.
The money market is easy, and the discounts in
bank are steadily expanding as the wants bag:-
ness require- them. The rates outside are un.:h
and we have not hoard that good paper is pressing on
the market to any extent. Exchange may he
quoted at last week's rates, viz: Sight drafts on New
York, -i. per cent. premium for par, and .2? ; s .31 per
cent. on currency ; on Philadelphia, i per c ent. pre

The New York Evening Poet, of Wed neaday, says :
The tables have turned, the lender is now subjected
to almost as great an inconvenience a F. the borrower
was a few months since. The greate et plentitmle is
on call, and it is very difficult to put mit any consid
erable quantity at 405 per cent. First class com.-
mercial paper was never scarcer that I now, and rates
during the week have leaned very s trougly in favor
of the negotiator-
We know cf a house that is buy ing its own paper
at 4 per cent., the same party who bought during the
panic at the legal rate.
The inflation in stocks con' ,inues at a perhaps
dangerous height, and the dealings have again been
very extensive. The great so Aroity of other securi-
ties has almost forced banks n ,n a bankers to loan on
stocks, hence the present ex( fitment.
The nows from Europe is 'in one or two particulars
construed rather unfavorab iy, but the ardor of spec-`
ulators is not to any degree dampened.
The Exchange market ( dosed for the Niagara quite
(tat for bankers' bills, bu's commercial were compara
tively well hold. The shipments of specie by the
Niagara from Boston
,to -day include only $205,000
from this city, all forwiarded by Belmont..
A reduction of $31,000 in the currency certificates
has taken place sim to yesterday, now amounting to
$1,539,000.
The exchanges r.t the Clearing-House are larger
to-day than at any time since October sth, when they
amounted to $19,800,000,. To-day they roach $19,-
201,817. There has been a heavy shifting of stock
loans within the past day or two. The movement in
stocks has now becomfi so inflated that the fears of
many have become aroused as to the permanency of
the late vigorous rise. Outsiders, we notice, within a
few days have shown an inclination to haul in sail—
their action may prove foresight.
The Philadelphia Pennsylvanian of Wednesday
says There is a stew dy upward movement in stocks,
resulting in a very largo measure from the abundance
of money seeking investment, and prices of many
securities now approach nearer to the maximum
quotation of the past five years than perhaps any
property or species of goods except real estate, of
which we have reliable quotations. There is,, how
evet., too much speculation interwoven with an un
doubted permanent appreciation of stocks, to make
investments, e.t present prices, perfectly safe or even
probably lucrative; and the man of true sagacity,
instead of becoming himself a buyer, lends his means
temporarily on the best securities offering, if only at
a cheap rate.
ASHES—There is nothing doing in Pots; the last sale was
made LA blAc., ear quotations now being entirely nominal.
Pearls are also nominal at 63.6 c. on time. There have been
some heavy sales of Soda; but the quotations •ore wit
held from
,us, and wo therefore continue our figures
3 1 ,4@3c.
.ite.PLES...IAIe supply in market is not very large, but
there is not u very active demand, and prices remain at
about last wrr,k's rates, say from $1,50 to $2 ",A. bbl. as in
quality; a basvy sale was made on Tuesday at the latter
8AC0N...1 .are was but a light demand, the market being..

DR. SANFORD'S INVIGORATOR,
TS REQUIRED TO CURE ANY ONE
troubled with Liver Complaints, 'unless the most des
perate of cases, when the second bottle will, with saute a
single failure, restore the patient to health and vigor. We
wish to call the attention of all to these facts, that the In
vigorator is compounded by a Ovarian who has need It in
his practice for the past twenty years with a success almost
credulous, and that It is entirely vegetable% being composed
wholly of gums.
Some idea of the strength of these gams may be formed
when it is known one bottle of the Invigorator contains as
much strength as one hundred doses of Calomel without ari9
of its deleterious effects.
We know there is nothing now before the American pub
lic, prepared with such skill by a acientifloman, particularly
for diseases of the Liver, as Dr. Sanford's Invigorator, or
Liver Remedy. It has attalued a reputation second to no
other article in the world, simply because it rest on its own
merit. To convince all by trial that it is all its proprietors
claim it to be, if any of our readers are suffering from such
diseases as are described in Dr. Panford'e advertisement, we
know of know remedy that will so surely cure them as the
Invigorator.
The Invigorator cures Sick Headache. Take one or two
teaspoonfuls at each attack and it will soon disappear. For
an overloaded stomach, or when food rises or sours, take the
Invigorator after eating, and it will not prove dlaaAreeable
or oppressive. For Heartburn, Palpitation or iffieuft
Breathing, take a tea poonful once or twice daily. For Loss
of Appetite, Languor or Listlessness, the medicine is invalu
able. It will restore the appetite and make the food digest
well. Nightmare, take a teaspoonful on retiring, and the
demons of dream-land will all be fairies. After eating it
hearty dinner, take a dose of Invigorator and it will relieve
all oppression or fullness. 'I ti 3 Invigorator is a Liver Rome
dy of unequaled virtue, acting directly on that organ, cur
ing Dyspepsia, Jannlice, 1311licrus Attacks, Dysentery, Piles,
Worms, and all Female Obstructions, for which it has 114
%Bats
We know there is nothing now before the American pub
lic prepared with such skill by a scientific man, particular •
ly for diseases of the Liver, as r. B.nford's Invigorator, or
Liver Remedy. It has attained a reputation second to no
other article in the word, simply because it rests on its owu
merit. To convince all by trial that it is all its proprietors
claim it to be, if any of our readers are suffering from such
diseases as are described in Dr. Sanford's advertisement, we
know of no remedy that will so surely cure them as the
Invigorator.
There has lately been brought to our notice a medicine
that seems to possess wonderful, curative and healing pro
perties in diseases of the Liver, Stomach and Digestive Or
gans. It came to us with so many testimonials in its favor
that we have noted its effects is some of the worst cases et
continual dibility, caused by deranged liver, and in every
instance the effect was to relieve or give a permanent cure,
Dr. Sanford's Invigorator, or Liver Remedy is what we re
fer to. We always have b,eu credulous about cures by pat
ent medicines, butwo are couNinced that this medicine, for
family use. is not overrated by the host of recommendatiov.,
it has. Our advice is, for all troubled with Indigestion ;
bility or Bowel Complaint, to get a bottle and try it; our
word for it, relief will be experienced.
lILIaSINOS TO TILT INVALIDS who U9O Dr. &lucent's invigor •
ator, for it will relieve them of, their pains as soon as it Is
taken into their stomach. Pain and misery cannot exist
where the Invigorator is used, for it will as surely drive them
away, as daylight will biqiish darkness, of this there can b
no doubt to th ,se who try it, for it carries conviction with
every dose taken. Another evidence is the thousands ot
certificates from those who use it or have been cured by it,
Try one bottle, ii it does not benefit, then we are mistaken.
