Regular Meeting of Councils.
The Select and Common Councils, metlast evening
in the new Chambers in the Diamond Market Rouse
building,which have now been permanently arranged.
A very handsome "arpot has been put down in each
Chamber, and a railing erected to separate spectators
from members of Council during their deliberations.
In Select Council Mr. McAuley in the Chair.
A memorial from Wood, Morrill & Co., asking an
additional appropriation for constructing a railroad
track on the wharf—was referred to the AI ononghela
Wharf Committee. C. C. concurred.
An act to establish "High" and "Low" Water Lines
in the Allegheny, Mononghela d'nd Ohio Rivers, with
a resolution, requesting the Senators and Representa
tives, to present the act to the Legislature for adop
tion was read. The act was adopted, and the resolu
tion read throe times, and passed. In Common Coun
cil action concurred in.
The railroad ordinance came in from Common
Council, and their action was concurred in by the fol -

In Common Council, Mr. McKelvy in the Chair.
A pciition was presented, from citizens of the Third
Ward, asking fora gas laMp on the corner of Grant
and High streets. Referred to Committee on Gas
L imps.
A petition ass presented from citizen of the Fifth
Ward, asking for the extension of the Gas Mains from
Adams to Carson streets, on Liberty, provided the
Pennsylvania Rrilroai Company erects the necessary
Limps, and pays fur the gas consumed by them. Re.
(erred to Gas Committee.
A petition from tho Sixth Ward for Gas Lamps on
Weinter street, was referred to tda:t Committee.
A petition from the Seventh Ward asking far the
grading and p tying of the upper part of Webster street
was referred to the Committee on grading and paving.
The Committee on City Printing presented a re
port, with a resolution asking ft r an appropriation
of $3,000. The report was accepted.
A bill of J. W. M'Csrthy for $3,00, and a bill of

A petition from the last meeting of Selact Council,

Webster streets, which had been referred to the Gas

relative to the crossing of the Pittsburgh, Fore
Wayne and Chicago Railroad, and Dr. A. (.I..M . Canl
Weiss took the Chair. The ordinance, the provisions;
~f which we have before published, was read, section'
by section. When the first section was read, Mr
Erretr moved to amend by making it necessary foi,
the Company to construct their road so as to pass.

10. While considering the fourth section Mr. Errete,
moved that the part relative to the extending chains'
across Penn street, during the passage of trains, be;
stricken out, which was lost. The fifth section was;
amended so as to prevent the crossing of freight

ing. This amendment was afterwards re considered'
and stricken out. Tho eleventh section fixes the
compensation to the city for the crossing at $lOO per
month, and in case the Company shall fail to pay
their installments for sixty days, the Mayor

:enrol section was strickea out. After the adoption
of ill's fourteenth section the Committee rose and re
iorted the ordinance to the Council; their report was
adopted and the ordinance was read a third time and
passed by the following vote :

We regret that this day is seldom celebrated as it
shou'd be in our city; we do not boner the birthday of
Am rica's brightest light as we should. It la singu•
ar that a people who can display such an intensity
of patriotic feeling on the Fourth ofJuly, cannot get
up a little enthusiasm on this occasion. We can only
attribute it to the difference in tile weather. Yes_
terday the only sign of a celebration we saw, was
a parade by the military of the city. the Duquense
Greys, Washington Infantry, Jackson Blues, and a
new Company, under the command of Capt. F. Hart
ineyer, called the Allegheny Rifle Company, turned
out, and presented a tine appearance. In the even
ing a ball was given at the Lafayette Hall, by the
new Company, at which most of the military were
present. It was said by those who were present, to
be a very brilliant affair.
The Jones ettae.—A decision was given on Satur
day last by Judge Gilmore, of Washington, on the
motion for a new trial in the case of William Jones,
Jr,, who, it will be remembered, was convicted of the
murder of Samuel H. White, s me three months
since. Tho argument was made at the last term,
Messrs. Hopkins and Slagle, of this city, representing
I,e defendant. The case was ably argued, but the
.Judge withheld his decision, and on Saturday an
nounced that, a new trial would be wanted. The
learned Judge did not make his reasons known
Jones will probably be acquitted now. It waa the
general opinion that .JO7lOB was innocent, and the de
cision of the Judge in this case will be received with
general satisfaction.

t Ives at Harrisburg, in which he states that ho has had

hat he will respite, if he does not unconditionly par•
don Munroe Stewart. It also states that Judge Knoa
I+ strongly in favor of a pardon. We shall probably
hear the decision of the Govatmor in this matter, to
day.

ago, a young man, named Robert Cunningham, was
convicted of bigamy, on oath of his wife. It was
alleged that ho was first married to the notorious
Mrs. M'Nutt, alias Spencer, and that he was after
wards married to ti woman named Thompson. A
motion was made for a new trial, when it was repre•
sented to the Court that the defendant was cireum
vented by Mrs. M'Nutt, who in the language of the
Court, " married him instead of him marrying her."
The new trial was granted, but the prosecutor not
appearing, the District Attorney on Saturday entered
a :mile proßepli, and the defendant was discharged.

"Still They Conie."—The police, on Saturday night,
ascertained that the furleys and Gorden had been
engaged in the robbery of the variety store of J. N,
Miller in the Vifth Ward, some months since, when
goods to the amount of eighty dollars were stolen.
Yesterday morning another search, was made through
the promises of Gordon, and a picture which had be
longed to Mr. Miller was found; several articles be. ;
longing to Mrs. Foster were also found, consisting of
linen goods of various kinds and a silk dress, which
was originally blue, but had been dyed by the
thieves. A pin was also found on a younger brother
of Gordon's, which turned out to bo the property of
Mr. Craig. He has not yet recovered all his property,
about seventy-five dollars' worth being still missing.
Conviction of Gcurge //ozen.---George Hazen, of
Washington, who was tried and convicted some six
mon•hs since, for f Irg , rig the name of Leverton Thom
r to a note for eleven hundred dollars, has just had
- econd trial at Washington. The trial ce , upied
three days and was concluded on Saturday evening.
ime man testified that he actually saw Thomas sign
the note, but as the defence could not prose that Has,
zen bad ever rendered value for this note, end the
writing resembled that of liazen's very closely, this
did not avail. The result 01 this trial was a verdict
of guilty. Mr. James H. Hopkins, of this city, was
engaged in this case.

Reserve township, ou Saturday, at which the follow

Pittsburgh Theatre.—Ms. John E. Owens appeared
last evening as Dr. 011apod, in the old English com
edy of the " Poi r Gentleman," to a good house. He
appears this evening as John Unit, in Mrs. S. F.
Bateman's colebrated'play of a Self." In this char
acter he stands unequaled, and will doubtless draw
a full house.
District Court.—Tn the District Court yesterday,
two cases, in both of which David Solos was plaintiff
and James Tood administrator of James Buchanan
defendant, verdicts f.r the plaintiff were rendered—
one for $875,62 and the other for $434,61.
Local News was very scarce yesterday. In our
rounds we could hear or sco nothing of interest. At
the Mayor's office a calm reigned, and a similar state
of things existed at the jail and Aldermen's offices.
Perhaps the cold weather has this effect.

County Bonds fOr Uailroad Stook.
J. Heron Foster, Esq., has introduced the following
bill into the Legislature, providing for the exchange
of the railroad stocks now held by the county, for
tho bonds which bad been hypothecated to aid in the
construction of the different railroads :
AN ACT relative to bonds issued by the county of
Allegheny for stock in railroad companies.
SECTION 1. Be it enacted, &c., That the COMMiB
1111013018 of the county of Allegheny be and they are
hereby authorized to exchange with any one or more
holders or owners of bonds of said county, issued in
payment for stock in any railroad company any
amount of said stock now owned by said county for
an equal amount of the said bond., each at their par
value. Provided that no stock shall bo exchanged
except fur bonds issued in payment for stock in the
same company, and that no such exchange shall be
made until bonds amounting to at least fifty thousand
dollars are tendered said Commissioners for the pur
pose, and within one month after effecting any suet
exchange said Commissioners shall publicly cancel
any bonds received for stocks, in the presence of one
or more Judges of the Court of Common Pleas, who
shall sign a certificate of euoh cancellation upon the
minutes of the board.—Reporter.
Mrs. J. D. Morrell, the wife of the owner of the
Cambria Iron Works, was thrown from a sleigh on
Wednesday last. Sho wee not seriously injured, but
received a severe wound on bar cheek.
