Last week, while one George Smith, in pursuance
his avocation of school teacher at Perrysville was
endeavoring to enforce order in his school room, he
was assailed by several of the larger scholars of tho
'heel, and received severe injuries from inkstands,
hooks, rulers, slates and other missiles which wore

Smith, came to the city and made information before
Ald. Donaldson against seven of the scholars who
took a prominent part in the assault_ Five of these

issued for their arrest. Mr. Smith states that this

Dlr. Prentice's Lecture
Mr. (fee. D. Prentice, of the Louisville "Journal"
lectured at Lafayette Hall on Saturday night. His
subject was " The present aspect and tendencies of
A tnerican Politics," and we must confess that ho did
not give us a single new idea. The only striking
Fea.ture in the lecture, aside from its tendency to one
point, the decay of our nation, and the inevitable die.
elution of the Union, was the shower of squibs which
;he speaker poured out amongst his audience—these
,ittio flashes, of wit we see every day in his paper.—
We are sorry that the Lecture Committee of the Li
t,rary Association do not select lecturers less strongly
ringed with a partizan spirit, or if they do select thew
that they do not exercise a judicious authority over
the subjects chosen by them to entertain their audi
ence. This Association expects and receives the sup
port of the public) generally, without regard to politics
or religion—its basis is entirely literary, and we hope
,hat in future the Committee entrusted with the duty
,f a electing lecturers will choose:subjects of a character
that will not conflict with the political or religious
views of any portion of our citizens.
Monster Petition.
Mr. R. P. Flonnikon, who acted as counsel fur
u:sr-e Stewart on his trial, started for the State
Capital on last Friday evening, taking with him all
rho petitions which have so far been signed, asking
axetutive clemency towards Stewart. It is said that
the petitions measure over one hundred and fifty feet
in length, and contain about four thousand signa
tures. About two hundred of the vigners reside in
, be vicinity of McKeesport. A number of other pe
titions are yet in circulation which will be forwarded
[o the Governor as soon as filled. We hoard it ru
mored on Saturday that a gentleman hul justreturn.
!,1 from Ilarrisburg, who had a conversation with
Governor Packer, concerning Stewart, in which the
,vernor intimated that he would not permit Stew , .
art to be executed at present. The matter yeast soon
:do decided, as Stewart has but a short time to live
unless he is respited or pardoned.
Deriliah Act.—On Tuesday night last, a valuable
terse belonging to William Perkins, ti q., County
`ommissioner, while standing quietly in front of Bal
oetine's storo, in the borough of Temperancoville,
~here the gentleman had stopped for a few moments
on 1118 way home, was cut by some devil in human
.thape in the forehead, inflicting n deep gash of about
or seven inches in length. Mr. Perkins did not
inn-ever the wound until Wednesday morning, when
m attempting to lead the animal of the stable, ho
daggered and almost fell. As will bo remembeied,
Tuesday night was very cold, and the poor brute must
have endured groat pain with the sharp wind blowing
into such a gash. Mr. P. has not been able to use
aim since, and it is yet doubtful whether death will
not ensue from the injury. The tun who could in
diet such a cruel wound on an inoffensive, unrcsist

An Accomotlntion A 611101.h:1g Car has just been

something to eat.
McCreary, the young man committed to jail charged
with committing highway robbery on James G. Mug
tin, has been released, on bail in the sum of $1,500
bring entered for him.
Nayor'a Oflice.—There were six common els"s at
the May ,r's office on Saturday , morning. Two paid
their glues and four were outwitted.
The Kelly Caee.—On Saturday, the Kelly case
came up for argument before Judge McClure. Messrs.
Reward and Snowden asked for subptenas for Valen
tine Fehl and John C. Smith. They stated that they
would prove by them mon that written communica
tions had been given to the jory, after the conclu
sion of the case and previous to their verdict. They
thought the verdict shout„ be set aside on this ground.
The judge informed the Warned counsel that inasmuch
as they had shifted their t;round alledging improper
interference, instead of misconduct of jurors, as first
changed, the matter would he deferred until next
Saturday.
Sentenced.—William Maxwell, convicted of lar
cony on oath of William Anderson, was sentenced on
Saturday. Thi3 is the man who drugged the liquor
of Mr. Anderson and then abstracted from his
pocket $2O. The prisoner said he was in bad health
and requested to be sent to jail, but the Judge re
fused. saying he would be 'more likely to recover in
the Penitentiary than in jail. He was accordingly
sentenced to a term of two years in the Penitentiary,
whore it is hoped, under the treatment of Dr. Pol
luck, he may soon regain his usual health.
Run Over.—On Friday afternoon a man named
Anthony Smith was walking on th pavement in the
Diamond, in Allegheny City, when a wagon heavily
loaded with lumber passed along, when one of the
horses attached to the wagon stumbled and fell
against him; he was knocked down in front of the
wagon, and before the team could be stopped one of
the wheels passed over his log. Singularly enoug,h,
no bones were broken, although he was considerably
bruised.
Ia the Court of Common Pleas on Saturday, Mr
Mahon asked for a reversion of an order of court in
the case of an alleged horse thief named Eli Hanna,
whose recognizance was forwarded. It seems that
Hanna is in jail in Crawford county on a charge of
forgery, and of course it was impossible for him to
be present at this court at the time of hi; trial. The
court declined recinding the order in this case until
the close of the term.
Larceny.—John Graham yesterday made informa
/
Lion before Mayor Weaver against Pat. Rooney,
charging him with larcery. Graham states that on
Saturday night he and Rooney had been out togeth
er, and indulging pretty freely, Rooney took hin and
put him to bed in the back office of Patterson's livery
stable. In the morning he found himself minus some
eighteen dollars, which he charges Rooney with steal
ing. Rooney was committed to jail to await his trial
at the next term of court.
Adjournment of the Court of Oyer and Terminer.—
On Friday the petit jury which has been in attend
ance on this Court and the Court of Quarter Sessions,
was notified that their services would not he required,
and the Court stands adjourned uutil the fourth Mon
day of March. Judge M'Cluro will sit this week to
attend to the business of the Court of Common Pleas,
which will probably occupy some• time, as there is a
forge number of cases on the list.
Acrident.—Wo learn that on Friday afternoon last,
a young Indy was standing on the track of the Penn
sylvania Railroad at Altoona, in conversation with a
friond on a train standing there, when another train
came up. She was knocked dawn and thrown under
the train, which passed over her legs, crushing them
to a jolly and almost severing them from her body.
The Mayor and the Railroad.—We understand that
the Pittsburgh, Fort Wayne and Chicago Railroad
Company have levied writs upon Mayor Weaver and
Rubeert Hague, Chief of the Police, requiring them
to show cause why they attempt to prevent the Com
pany from taking their track across Penn street.—
The writs are made returnable on next Monday the
first day of March.
The Pittsburgh Theatre.—Mr. Owens appeared for
the second time this season last evening, in his two
side splitting representations of Paul Pry and Solon
Shingle; in the latter character be has no equal.
Ile appears this evening as Dr. 011apod, in the
'• Poor Gentleman." The farce of the " Miseries of
Iluman Life " will also be presented.
Arrested for Snow Balling.—Four buys wore ar
rested on Monday night for throwing snow balls at
sleighs in the street. They were kept in the watch
honse all night, and in the morning Mayor Weaver
lined them $3 each—warning them that next time
they should 'oe sent to jail.
The case of William Steinberg was called up again
on Saturday. Witnesses were examined on both
sides, but they did not seem to help the case much,
and at the request of counsel, sentence was deferred
another week.

DR. SANFORD'S INVIGORATOR;
Is REQUIRED TO CURE ANY ONE
troubled with Liver Complaints, nnleu the mot dew
pemte of cases, when the second bottle will, with loam •
eingle failure, restore the patient to health and vigor. We
wish to call the attention of all to these facts, that the
vigorator is compounded by a ph,,elcian who has nod It In
his pramtico for the past twenty years with a success *boost
credulous, and that it is entirely vegetable, being emalx)eed
wholly of gums.
Some idea of the strength of these gums may be fotmed
when it is known one bottle of the Invigorator contains as
much strength as one hundred doses of Calomel without any
of its deleterious effects.
We know there is nothing LOW before tho American pub
lic, prepared with such skill by a scientific man, particularly
for diseased of the Liver, as Dr. Sanford', Invigorator, or
Liver Remedy. It has attaieed a reputation second to no
other article in the world, dimply because it rest on it, own
merit. To convince all by trial that it is all its proprietors
claim it to be, if any of our readers are suffering from inch
diseases as are ;described in Dr. Sanford's advertisement, we
know of know remedy that will so surely cure them ad the
Invigorator.
Miss Turnbull
The Invigorator cures Sick Headache. Take one or two
teaspoonfuls at each attack and it will soon disappear. Pox
an overloaded stomach, or whon food rises or sours, take the
Invigorator after eating, and it will not prove dinecuble
or oppressive. For Heartburn, Palpitation, or DiMoult
Breathing, take a tea poonful once or twice daily. Per Loss
of Appetite, Languor or L etleasness, the medicine is Invalu
able. It will restore the appetite and make the food digest
well. Nightmare, take a teaspoonful 'on retiring, and the
demons of dream-land will all be Dillies. After eating a
hearty dinner, take a dose of Invigorator and it will relieve
all oppression or fullness. 14 Invigorator is a Liver Rome
fly of unequaled virtue, acting directly on that organ, cur
ing Dyspepsia, JarltAiee Billions Attacks, Dysentery, .Piles,
Worms, and all Female ' Obstructions, for which it has no
equal.
Mr. Weaver
We know there Is nothing now before the American pub.
tic prepared with such skill by a scientific man, particular
ly for diseases of the Liver, aril r. S.mford's Invigorator, or
Liver Remedy. It has attained a reputation second.to no
other article in the word, simply because it rests on its own
merit. To convince all by trial that it is all its proprietors
claim it to be, if any of our readers are suffering from such
diseasea as are described in Dr. Sanford's advertisement, we
know of no remedy that will so surely cure them as the
Invigorator.
There has lately been brought to our notice a medicine
that seems to poastats wonderful, curative and healing pro
perties in diseases of the Liver, Stomach and Digestive Or
gans. It came to us with so many testimonials in ita favor
that we have noted its effects in some of the worst cases of
continual dibility, caused by derangeo liver, and in every
instance the effect was to relieve or give a permanent cure,
Dr. Sanford's Invigorator, or Liver Itemedy is what we re•
fer to. We always have liken credulous about cures by pat
ent medicines, but we are convinced that thin medicine, for
family use, is not overrated by the host of recommendatiot I
it bag. Our advice is, fur all troubled with Indigeation.J:.
Wit) , or Bowel Complaint, to got a bottle and try It; our
word for It, relief will be experienced.
BLESSINGS To THE INvAues who use Dr. Sanford's Invigor•
ator, tor it will rolleve them of their pains as 80011 as ft Is
taken into their stomach. Pain and misery cannot exist
where the Invigorator is need, for It will as surely drive them
away, as daylight will banish darkness, of this there can b
nu doubt to th .se she try it, for it carries conviction with
every dose taken. Another evidence is the thousands of
certitlestes from those who use it or have been cured by it,
Pry oue bottle, it it does not benefit, then we are mistaken.
