The House refused to auiipendahe rules, only two
voting in the affirmative.
Mr. Walcott appeared with a written statement dis.
claiming any in tee t:• I o,f contempt of the authority
of the House, but designing the r ght of the Commatee
le requ•re answers to questions not wit in the scope,
of their duties, namely, the investigation of charges
against members of the last !Luse in connection vith
the tariff bill. He has beet legally advised not di
answer questions criminating himself unless oppi•rtu
oily is granted him to be heard. lie defended his
pioitiun at great length.
Mr Stanton's resolution de luring that Walc••tt
but failed to answer satisfeeterily and orde-ini ,
committal to j!il, lind teat ho be k r‘t in close eusitc••
dy untilffie be willing to answer a.t legal and pot
questions, was then discussed.
• Mr. Stanton said that the power to enquire neces
sarily implied the power to compel witnesses to p . a.,
duce all esential evidence. The Quits() had by cool
mon law, the right to punish witnesses fur contempt.
it was proved that $58,000 came into the hands of
Mr. Walcott, perhaps innocently, hut subsequently
might have been applied to corrupt purposes. The
committee bad the right of knowing, what because
of the money.
Mr. Jones, of Tenness.see,.ineffeclually moved to
table the, whole subject. Tho resolution, under the
operation of the previous question, was passed by
133 against 55 votes.
On motion of Mr. Merrill the Committee on For

Some idea of the strength of these gums may be formed

diseases as are described in Dr. Sanford's advertisement, we
know of know remedy that will so surely cure them as the
Invigorator.
The Invigorator cures dick Headache. Take one or two
teaspoonfuls at each attack and it will soon disappear. For
an overloaded stomach, or when food rises or sours, take the
Invigorator after eating, and it will not provo disagreeable
or oppree, ye. For Heartburn, palpitation, or Difficult
Breathing, take a teaspoonful once or twice daily. For Lees
of Appetite, Languor or Latlessnes3, the medicine is invalu

well. Nightmarg take a teaspoonful on retiring, and the
demons of drevErland will all be fairies. After eating a
