Jt;IF N Ft It AD / W `CONCLUDED " I reckon there's a right smart deal of hard work to bolllone in that sitoorttion of his'n," said Mr. Dobson; an honest, fartner-like looking man, clad iu sheep's gray, addressing the com pally generally. "Yes, Sir!" "That's .a,fact ;" "and, Fax, ye may say that same," chimed in a chorus from the outsiders of the circle. " Would yeti have any objection, Sir," said Mr. Hodge;, dropping his voice to a whisper, "to in dicate which way,in'your experienced judgement, our election is going to go ?" • " Why really," replied I, "living as I do, and taking so little part in politicks, I "I understand," said be ; nodding and inter rupting ; "I 'understand. Quito right; in your exalted position, 'ono can't he too cautious of what, ho says. Yeti are quite right. • I beg your pardon for making the enquiry." Here a dead silence ensued for a brief time, the insiders of the circle apparently being talked out, and the outsiders too much awed by the dignity of the occasion to venture any remarks. I wish lootenant Reed was here," at length observed 'Sqlre Staples ; " he'd abeen delighted. Probably you didn't know him, but ho fought with you in Mexico. He's a giant of a, fellow, six feet two, and a perfect dare-devil." It struck me that, although I had never been in Mexico, yet, if this beligerent lieutenant en tertained the impression that he had fought with me there, he might possibly want to fight with me again inSmithhure'. So I mentally hoped ha would not return before T left " May I bfg the honor of just one moment's private conversation," entreated a shabby-gen teel personage, drawing me aside by the coat button. "I=am an attorney and counsellor at law ; but'bueitiess is poor here. By the way, I ought to mention that I have always, worked hard for the 'party, and never dreamed of asking anything. Anybody will toll you so. But what I was going to ask you was, whether, if I come down your way, there would be any chance of getting an office ? I wouldn't think of such a thing if it wasn't for my straitened circum stances There really don't seem to be nothing for me to do'up here." Ah ! thought I, he is thinking of going to Now York to practice, and wants to know about rent ing an offico there. So I told him , " Certainly, he would have no difficulty in getting one, though it was rather late in the season." "Yes, I know that," said he; " 1 ought to have been on hand at the fourth of March. But you really think I coital do something in that way ? And abJut how much do you think it would be worth?" 1 told him there wait a great difference in the rents, that they ranged from fifty 41ollars up to five hundred, and even eifght hundred or nine hundred dollars. " Yes, so I supposed, by what I seen about them in the blue hook. One of them eight hundred dollar ones would be just the thing for me." I could not help thinking it would be a long time before he would do business enongli to war rant him in renting an eight hundred dollar office. But before the colloquy proceeded fur ther, it was broken off by the landlord's bringing . the information that it only wanted fifteen min utes of the time for the down train, and that " they were waiting to escort me to the cars." Having by this time come to the conclusion that Smithburg was one vast asylum and all its pop ulation lunatics, I submitted resignedly to the programme that appeared to be marked out for me. I walked out, the crowd within respectful ly following, and the crowd without cheering vo ciferously ad I made my appearance. Captain Q'Flynn's Smithburg Guards wore drawn up in, a line before the door, in their gor geous nniforin of yellow coats with green facings, and lathe pantaloons with a red stripe down the side, and were standing in obedience to the or- • der, "Present arms !" They wheel into march ing order; the drum and fife struck up " Hail Columbia," General Smith took me by the arm ;' the other two committee men divided between the honor of carrying my carpet-bag, the citizens, paired off by twos behind u., and away we March. ed to the railroad station, a crowd lining the Bide walk., " the ladies " thronging the windows and waving white handkerchiefs ; the crowd cheer ing ; the dogs barking ; the little boys with sticks and paper caps marching alongside, and General Smith, all the way pouring into my ears the' eep gratitude of the town fez the visit, the equally deep regret that they had not had time to get up a more batiefitting " celebration," and urgent en treaties that I would repeat the visit "when Con gress adjourned." Arrived at the care just in season, I parted from my hospitable ffieuda un ti4,.platfeym, with more hand shakings, and a whispered nntieritY of "Don't forget the office," from my shabby genteel friend; and as the train mov e d off, ni ne stentorian cheers from the assembled gathering actually drowned the locomotive's whistle. I had become so used to adulation and 'admi ration by the morning's experience, that I half expected to be greeted with similar demonstra tions aboard the tritin; and half wondered whether the city bellsrould strike up a peal of welcome in honor of my return, and whether I should find the Common Council nod General Sanford with. the firg.i. Brigade of N. Y. S. M. waiting at the depot to escort me to 'the City . Nothing of the tort transpired, however.— Nobody took any particular, notice of me, eith er on the train or when I got off of it. T had quite sunk into my original insignificance. I walked to my lodgings without exciting any attention in the streets. Reaching there, I pull ed off my new boots, which had proved rather tight, and sat down in easy §lippers to rest and cogitate upon wy singular adventures. Some writing on the inside of the lining of one of the boots attracted my notice. I took it up and read, in a large round hand, " Franklin Pierce." The mystery was explained! to hastily pur chasing ready-made boo's, I had bought a pair made for the President. When I set thein (int over night, to he blacked at the "Smithburg Hotel," the wait 6; had read the name, and com municated the important secret to the landlord, from whom it had spread like wildfire through 'he town. I had been passing with the Smith burgers for ; President Pierce! I have not ventured to show myself in Smith burg since. I have never hoard of General Pierce's going there either, so I suppose they are not undecived to this day. P.
