LOCAL AFFAIRS. me Burning of [he OrOssman. We blip the following particulars of the burning of tie Crossman from the Chronicle "of yesterday, as obtained from Mr. Thomas Daffy, one of the engi. noors, who has returned to this city : The explosion occurred,. on Thursday evening, about 7 o'clock, and, while the boat was under full headway. Mr. D. had just left his "watch," and was taking supper in the cabin when the explosion occurred. The shock was quite trivial, and was scarcely Loticed, by those above. Tho "nigger" boiler only exploded, and had the crew and passen• gore but exercised a little caution, the loss of life could not have been anything so largo as it is. Immediately titer the explosion, Mr. D. went down to the main deck, !.n.l saw several of the passengers jump into the river. He 'believes that many lives were IM:!' 1 , , , ,nti543 the pa,i , engers, iu putting on the lif.',•prescrvers, fastened them below the hip— thus rendering lain, • rue moment they jumped into the ea iec, that their head would go under. Mr. Duffy remained on the boat until the flames had neari encircled her, and was finally taken off by the which was under charge of Mr. and ennui around just in time to save hies. Mr. RobN.t Duffy, chief engineer of the Cressumn, and a brother of Mr. T. Duffy, retrained by the boat till the last. lle showed the greatest presence of mind throughout the trying scone, and to his cool ness, and that of the officers of the Mariner, may be attributed the fact that so tow lives were lost. Mr. D., in the cud, had to jump into the river, and had swam some three hundred yards towards shore, when ho was picked up. It is gratifying to know that the accident was not the result of carelessness. It was one of those oe curronces against which no precaution avails, and which will happen occasionally, no matter how care ful may be tho engineers or the officers of the boat. The Crossumn is a total loss, and is insured [or seine $2,500 in this city. Wm.
