`JAW AL AFFAIRS:
E E.WAY MORNING OCTOBER 8
A .Sorry Sight.—Testerday afternoon
. a scene was
enacted in the Court of Quarter Sessions t.::nt was n
very sad commentary upon poor human natn:e. A
young man named John Dunlap was brought into
the prisoner's box, and his father appeared befor.`
the bar of the Court to testify against him. Hassid
John had threatened the lives of himself and family
frequently, both when in liquor and when in his
Bober senses ; and, from a sense of danger, be had
him committed to jail on the fifth of last July, where
he has bean ever since. He did not wish to prose
cute the information made, but would drop it if his
eon would promise to leave the State. The young
man was asked to tell his story by his Honor. He
said he had been in liquor several times, and if such
tbroutl ps charged by hie father had been made, they
o ere .I, ne when he was not himself. Ile was anal
oov, he said, to leave the State, if only permitted to
do so, and would never again darken the old moo's
door. The Court sentenced John to pay the costs,
and, rot being able to do so, the father was ques
tioned as to his ability to discharge them. Ile said
he wt,i a hard working man, had a wife and ten
chi: iron, and was poor; so John bad to be re-com
mitted. Both father and son appeared to be doeply
afflicted with their positions. This is a lesson, for,
“Whatever brawls disturb the street,
There should be peace at borne."
Tie _ill 110111 C.—We have received a commu
nication from "A Traveler," who says among other
things " I have traveled over moot of the Railroad,,
in the Union and tried the quality of the fare at the
eating houses located on their routes, but none of
them hove I found to be Superior and very few equal
to the Alliance 'House, kept by Mr. D. Sourbock."
We can readily agree with the writer, as we believe
will e..y one who has had the same experience with
himself. Dan: has a reputation as extensive as rail
road travel itself. The l'ittsburgh and Chicago Rail
road Company are fortunate in having him on tbrir
route, for we believe it has became a custom for pas
sengers, who are posted, to fast until they get to Al
liance, where they hare a certainty 42,..455ays getting
something very nice and plenty of it. It would be
well for the proprietors of eating houses, on railroat4
that lead to this city, to emulate Sourbeck's example.
We wi old then have fewer "curses, not loud but
deep," from disappointed men in pursuit uf something
fit to eat.
Killed.—Louis Shade, thirty years of age,
and a man of family, was instantly killed on Mon.
day afternoon, about three o'clock, by a fall of
''horseback,' in the Duquesne Coal Mines of Messrs.
Coleman, Hallman .t Co., near 1,1/e Allegheny Valley
Railroad, and about eight mi es above the oily.
Another miner was somewhat injured.

pi,r,;rt Court—Jonas PTOA.—The only case
before lite Court was that of Smytten vs. Eaton, an
action for damages for malicious prosecution, which
was commenced 'on Monday and concluded yester
day. The jury is now out.

Jfeue.. d Molityouirry: A spirited meet.
ing of the Democracy of North Fayette township, BY TELEGRAI'II,.
Washington county, has just adjourned at this place.
The object was to raise a hickory pole, 126 feet in
height. As the election approaches the enthusiasm
here increases. The old and young were here ; the
snowy-haired veterans of sixty and seventy winters;
the strong-armed and brave-hearted men iu the vigor
of manhood ; the mothers who have cheered on their
sons in many a bygone campaign; and their bloom
ing eheeked daughters—were all here, anxious to at
test their devotion to the Constitution, and raise
their voices for the only party that "carries the flag
and keeps step to the music of the 1 1 1:11011."
After the raising of the pole, and the presentation
of the flag on behalf of the ladies present, by whose
fair bands it was prepared and purchased for the
casion, Mr. G. I'. McVay, a subscriber of the Po.',
and citizen of Allegheny county, according to a pre
vicus invitation, took the stand and il.scus, eil tia
great issue in it manner seldom equalled by the hest
stumpors in your e,,untj - . We will not attempt even
to give a synopsis of his masterly argument; we
could not do him justice. Ile spoke for two h. ur.,t
with great earnestness and rapidity of tit teranet.. iii,d
was listened to with marked attention. He a
quiet, modest farmer, in independent circumstances,
without any political ambition; was, until within a
-few weeks a member of the old-line WLig party or
Allegheny county ; but he says he now leaves his
plow in the furrow to raise his voice for the Consti
tution of his country."
Jlie appeal to those with whom he has been asso
ciated from boyhood was moat touching: if his
